In this we profile the lives and explore the legacies of some of the biggest photography luminaries to have ever lived and worked on the planet. The precursors of fashion photography go back to the 18th century, when images of fashionable clothes were printed in magazines and often hand-coloured. Paris was, at that time, a centre for the production of such magazines, many of which were imported into England. The technique of photography was developed in the 1830s, but it wasn’t until much later that the métier of fashion photography came into existence. The earliest popular photographic technique, the daguerreotype, could not be used for mass printing. A later technique enabled the production of the ‘carte de visite’, which were made for individuals and which also depicted famous theatre and music hall personalities of the age. It wasn’t until advances in halftone printing techniques that fashion photographs came to be featured in magazines. This happened in about the first decade of the 20th century. Now when we see famous designer brands in advertisements and catalogues, what we are really seeing is the artistry of the image-makers who stand behind the camera. What we don’t see is their names. Personal opinion will decide who were the greatest photographers of all time, but in the minds of many experts, a special few could be singled out. All words one could use to describe Vivienne Westwood, a woman who is perhaps the most influential British designer the world has ever seen. In an industry predominantly created to showcase beauty, Westwood uses her skills to advocate higher causes, through her passion for art, history and social justice. Westwood was born in 1941, in the village of Tintwistle, Derbyshire. Her parents, Gordon and Dora, had met two years previously at the onset of the Second World War. Fashion Industry Broadcast's Masters of Photography Series is one of the most extensive and prestigious publishing initiatives ever released on photography. In this we profile the lives and explore the legacies of some of the biggest photography luminaries to have ever lived and worked on the planet. The precursors of fashion photography go back to the 18th century, when images of fashionable clothes were printed in magazines and often hand-coloured. Paris was, at that time, a centre for the production of such magazines, many of which were imported into England. The technique of photography was developed in the 1830s, but it wasn't until much later that the metier of fashion photography came into existence. The earliest popular photographic technique, the daguerreotype, could not be used for mass printing. A later technique enabled the production of the 'carte de visite', which were made for individuals and which also depicted famous theatre and music hall personalities of the age. It wasn't until advances in halftone printing techniques that fashion photographs came to be featured in magazines. This happened in about the first decade of the 20th century. Now when we see famous designer brands in advertisements and catalogues, what we are really seeing is the artistry of the image-makers who stand behind the camera. What we don't see is their names. Personal opinion will decide who were the greatest photographers of all time, but in the minds of many experts, a special few could be singled out. We have recently just seen the passing of an era, as Corinne Day, Richard Bailey, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton, Horst P Horst, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts, Robert Mapplethorpe, Norman Parkinson are all no longer with us, but their legacy, like that of historic monuments, lives on. One of the Irish Times' Books of the Year, 2008 Rebellion, partition and a messy peace settlement ensured that Ireland was a constant thorn in Britain's side after 1916. Britain was confronted by the bombs and bullets of militant republicans, the clandestine intrigues of foreign powers and the strategic dangers of Ireland's wartime neutrality - a final, irrevocable step in the country's difficult transition to independence. Using newly-opened archives, this book reveals for the first time how the British intelligence system responded to these threats. It lifts the lid on the underground activities of Britain's secret agencies - MI5, MI6/SIS and the Special Branch. It puts secret intelligence in the context of the government's other sources of information and explores how deep-rooted cultural stereotypes distorted intelligence and shaped perceptions. And it shows how, for decades, British intelligence struggled to cope with Ireland but then rose to the challenge after 1940, largely because the Dublin government began to share its secrets. The author casts light on characters long kept in the shadows - IRA gunrunners, Bolshevik agitators, Nazi agents, Irish loyalists who acted as British spies. His compelling book fills a gap in the history of the British intelligence community and helps explain the twists and turns of Anglo-Irish relations during a time of momentous change.
