As she prepares to celebrate the wedding of her youngest child, Pat is rocked to the core with news that something is wrong inside her body. She resolves to face the rare illness just as she has confronted other challenges: head on. After all, life is racing ahead, and it's all she can do to keep up. With her mother's health declining, Pat assumes the role of family matriarch, all the while aware she herself eventually will pass it to future generations through her daughters. For now, it's up to her to continue the family tradition of writing and saving letters that hold together an extended group of her four adult children, growing list of grandchildren, three brothers, and numerous relatives and friends, despite the boundaries of geography. Pat and her family battle hurricanes, medical emergencies and relationship pains. They also share their love of life with big news about romance, babies, job promotions, travel and everyday pleasures. When Pat is forced to make a life-changing decision, she finds that she has support from more than just her family. She also has the inner strength she has carried all along.
Most every family has a batch of personal letters tucked away in a drawer or a cedar chest, perhaps from someone who was away at war, visiting a foreign land, professing love, apologizing for a major wrong or just pouring out the deepest feelings. But it’s rare to find a collection that tells a universal story. Legacy of Letters reveals in depth the ever-changing dynamics of a family circle. At its center is a young Southern girl who took the “normal” path to her vision of a fulfilled, contented maturity, only to arrive feeling empty and restless, and compelled to explore the puzzling questions about life and purpose. The true story is told through a series of actual letters and diary entries written between 1932 and 1977 and preserved by the author and members of her family. These treasured documents tell of ordinary facets of life but together make up an extraordinary portrait. This book is the first in a series that carries the story to the present day. In today’s age of instantaneous communication, we take for granted just how much of our history is preserved by the written word. Legacy of Letters captures a snapshot of real American history and passes it down through time to current and future generations.

After 24 years of marriage, Pat and her husband decide to divorce. With three children in college and one in elementary school, the family strives to remain close while being geographically scattered. Pat’s challenge is to survive on her own after being a full-time mother and homemaker. She becomes a professional nanny/executive home manager, which takes her into the homes of prominent people with unusual, exciting lives. For years, Pat has felt something is missing. Now in her mid-40s, she begins taking college classes, writing, traveling and attending self-growth seminars to seek spiritual guidance and inner peace. Ironically, in the midst of her searching, she remains a solid anchor for everyone around her. While she looks for answers, Pat begins to realize life isn’t all about a golden prize of wisdom at the end of a rainbow, it’s about learning as we navigate through both sunshine and storms. Through it all, she continues keeping a daily journal and saving letters written to and by her family members, a tradition her mother started decades before. Literature of Life is a true story told through these documents and is the second book in a series that started with Legacy of Letters.
