The number of Canadian cities using video surveillance systems to monitor city streets is growing. In Panoptic Dreams, Sean Hier explores how and why Canadian cities introduced street surveillance programs between 1981 and 2005 and brings to light the governance structures and privacy protection policy frameworks that made these programs possible. This book uses empirical findings to reflect critically on video surveillance policy and design structures in Canada. The original analyses will assist academics, privacy advocates, and others with community-based interests to assess the strengths and weaknesses of establishing streetscape CCTV surveillance monitoring systems."--
Following the recent unveiling of the monument to Bomber Command in London's Green Park, the publication of this lovingly crafted account of the exploits of oft-overlooked 1 Group is set to be a timely one. Patrick Otter combines an appropriate level of detail regarding operations, aircraft, bases and incidents, with accounts of human endurance and squadron fraternity, which works to create a thoroughly well researched account of the wartime proceedings of 1 Group which is rooted firmly in humanity. The book is heavily illustrated throughout with both images of aircraft and pilot profiles, supplementing the text perfectly and working further to humanize the accounts which the author relays, as well as satisfying the Aviation buffs curiosity for new and interesting images of aircraft in their wartime contexts. Although often considered a somewhat controversial operational unit, the bravery of the men who made up Bomber Command has never been in question. This book is further testament to that fact.
This book is an introduction to the linguistic concepts of argumentation relevant for argument mining, an important research and development activity which can be viewed as a highly complex form of information retrieval, requiring high-level natural language processing technology. While the first four chapters develop the linguistic and conceptual aspects of argument expression, the last four are devoted to their application to argument mining. These chapters investigate the facets of argument annotation, as well as argument mining system architectures and evaluation. How annotations may be used to develop linguistic data and how to train learning algorithms is outlined. A simple implementation is then proposed. The book ends with an analysis of non-verbal argumentative discourse. Argument Mining is an introductory book for engineers or students of linguistics, artificial intelligence and natural language processing. Most, if not all, the concepts of argumentation crucial for argument mining are carefully introduced and illustrated in a simple manner.
In the past ten years, employment of immuno- and receptor- assays has grown dramatically. Now used in the pharmaceutical industry for automated screening programs, in the agro-food industry for on-line processing control and food adulteration detection, and in clinical laboratories, they are fully integrated analytical tools. However, the literature often covers only one type of assay or just one of the many systems available. Immune and Receptor Assays in Theory and Practice gathers and organizes the available information to help you establish the best assay for your application. This composite presents the fundamentals of both techniques and introduces practical examples of equation use, antibody and receptor purification, antigen labeling, immunization, and establishment of antibodies for long-term storage. It contrasts the many different assay designs and addresses market trends as the context for developing immuno-assay goals. In addition, this volume summarizes the biochemical and physical properties involved in antibody- and receptor-ligand interactions and reagent manufacture. This is the first, single-volume synthesis of both immuno- and receptor-assays. With theoretical background and practical examples, Immune and Receptor Assays in Theory and Practice allows you to base your experiment on proven techniques, components, and applications for the most reliable results.
This advanced undergraduate physics textbook presents an accessible treatment of classical mechanics using plain language and clear examples. While comprehensive, the book can be tailored to a one-semester course. With the increase of globalization of business and industry, IT products and services are often produced and marketed across geographical cultural boundaries without adequate consideration of culture. There is a high probability that IT products and services developed in one country may not be effectively used in another country, which may hinder their market penetration, sales, and use. Based on research and practice, Cross-Cultural Design for IT Products and Services provides a resource for human factors engineers, designers, and marketing professionals who define and develop IT products and services for the global market. With its extensive review of cross-cultural theory and cross-cultural design literature, it is also a resource for those who are interested in research on cross-cultural design. The book presents an overview of the dimensions of culture that have implications for human information processing and affective response. It examines a set of user interface design guidelines grouped into five areas: language, use of color, icons and images, navigation, and information architecture. Also, it addresses physical ergonomics and anthropometry issues. The text translates theory and guidelines into a practical methodology and discusses how to integrate methods of cross-cultural design into a standard engineering process for product development. The authors review and reappraise theories, models, principles, and techniques for design of IT products and services that will be marketed globally. They provide guidelines for user interface design across North American, Asian, and other cultures. Applying the guidelines within the methodological framework provided will enhance the usability and effectiveness of the IT product or service, and contribute to greater user satisfaction, increased productivity, higher sales, and lower product support costs.
