One of the most feared terrorists in the world, known as the Scorpion, presents a plan to the Grand Ayatollah of Iran for a terrorist attack against the United States. No terrorist ever captured has seen or spoken directly to the Scorpion. The plan will take many years to develop, but it is beyond anything the U.S. has prepared for or thought possible. The Ayatollah believes that the success of the attack will so cripple The Great Satan that he will be able to mobilize the world's one billion Muslims into a world-wide Holy War against a weakened America. John Murphy, the director of the New York office of Homeland Security, while following up intelligence leads regarding the Scorpion, enlists the help of his life-long friend, Tim Shannon, a seasoned covert operative, to help track him down. Shannon follows the Scorpion's trail from Istanbul through the Middle East and Europe as the Scorpion initiates his attack against the United States. Shannon and Murphy must find the Scorpion and stop the terrorist attack before it destroys the heart and soul of America. Their best lead comes in the form of a cryptic note from an unlikely source outside the intelligence community.
The sweet smell of licorice and the giant candy bar painted on the factory wall at the Eads Bridge remain locked into the collective memory of generations of St. Louisans. Candy Men: The Story of Switzer’s Licorice tells the story of how two Irish-American families began a candy company in the kitchen of a tenement in St. Louis’s Irish slum and showed the world how the American Dream can be built upon a foundation of candy. In a story that passes through three generations, two World Wars, economic depressions, and labor unrest, the Murphys and the Switzers dedicated their lives to keeping the dream alive until it was put to an end by forces beyond their control. And yet, in an unlikely turn of events, the story continues today with a fresh twist and a renewed life of its own.
A comprehensive study of black participation in sports since slavery reveals a checkered history of prejudice and cultural bias that have plagued American sports from the beginning.
Real Guns confronts the topical issues of gun control and the effects of war-past and present-on returning soldiers and their families. Jon, like many young boys, is fascinated by guns. He finds a loaded pistol hidden under his parents' bed, with nearly tragic consequences. The close call prompts his father to explain to Jon why he needs to keep the gun, forging a much closer bond between father and son. Patrick Murphy's stunning illustrations are a perfect complement to Reiter's timeless story, allowing younger readers to better understand why guns are at once a necessary part of contemporary life but also a danger when they get into the wrong hands.
A moving and inspiring memoir from the first Iraq war veteran to be elected to the United States Congress Congressman Patrick J. Murphy, the Irish American son of a Philadelphia policeman and a former nun who raised their family in a tough-but-loving blue-collar neighborhood, grew out of a scrappy childhood to become a community college student and then—quickly—army officer, lawyer, and the youngest professor at West Point. He served in Iraq as a captain in the elite 82nd Airborne "All-Americans" where he earned a Bronze Star for service, and successfully prosecuted one of Muqtada al-Sadr's top lieutenants. Returning from Iraq with a determination to help change the direction of this country, Murphy, a political novice, ran an inspirational grassroots campaign against a popular Republican incumbent while being outspent by more than $2 million. Told with passion and candor, Taking the Hill is a powerful and moving tale of love for family and the belief that the American dream is still within reach. More than anything, Murphy's life demonstrates the joys and necessity of serving others, whether that means one's family or students, community or fellow soldiers, or one's nation.
