The complexity of the microbial population of the animal gastro-intestinal trac has been recognised long ago. However, thus far, investigations have been limited to a few major groups, considered to be dominating, and pathogens that are detrimental and may case diseases and concomitant financial losses in the production animal. Thanks to the latest developments, including improved micriological detection and sampling techniques, and the application of molecular tools to monitor the presence of specific strains in the intestine, our knowlede has increased rapidly in recent years. In addition, new approaches towards improving and/or stabilising animal health, are addressed, with special emphasis on probiotics, and also with regard to the use selected bacterial strains as vehicles for delivery of pharmaceutically active compounds to the muscosa. Despite efforts to redress the prejudice and discrimination faced by people with mental illness, a pervasive stigma remains. Many well-meant programs have attempted to counter stigma with affirming attitudes of recovery and self-determination. Yet the results of these efforts have been mixed. In The Stigma Effect, psychologist Patrick W. Corrigan examines the unintended consequences of mental health campaigns and proposes new policies in their place. Corrigan analyzes the agendas of government agencies, mental health care providers, and social service agencies that work with people with mental illness, dissecting how their best intentions can misfire. For example, a campaign to change the language around mental illness by replacing supposedly stigmatizing words with empowering ones has made little difference in how people with mental health conditions are viewed. Educational programs that frame mental illness as a brain disorder have made the general public less likely to blame people for their illnesses, but also skeptical that such conditions can be cured. Ultimately, Corrigan argues that effective strategies require leadership by those with lived experience, as their recovery stories replace ideas of incompetence and dangerousness with ones of hope and empowerment. As an experienced clinical researcher, as an advocate, and as a person who has struggled with such prejudices, Corrigan challenges readers to carefully examine anti-stigma programs and reckon with their true effects.

This order, they claim, ushered in seventy years of peace and prosperity and saw post-war America domesticate the world to its values. Liberal projects – to spread capitalist democracy – led inadvertently to illiberal results. To make peace, America made bargains with authoritarian forces. As its power grew, Washington came to believe that its order was exceptional and even permanent – a mentality that has led to spiralling deficits, permanent war and Trump. Romanticizing the liberal order makes it harder to adjust to today’s global disorder. Only by confronting the false promise of liberal order and adapting to current realities can the United States survive as a constitutional republic in a plural world.

Several evolutionary models proposed that molecular hydrogen (H2) was the primary energy source on the early Earth, exerting a major influence on the origin of life. Hydrogenase, the enzyme catalyzing the interconversion of H2 into protons and electrons, is thus considered an ancestral invention, for which the molecular structure and architecture have been thoroughly adapted for specialized tasks, undertaken in peculiar environments, during the course of the evolution. Three different types of hydrogenase can be distinguished on the basis of the metal content of their active site, namely, [NiFe]-hydrogenase, [FeFe]-hydrogenase, and [Fe]-hydrogenase. Although they share common features, taxonomic distribution, maturation apparatus, and physiological role differ substantially among the three different classes of hydrogenases. These metalloenzymes are thus considered a classical example of convergent evolution. The notion that “there is much to learn from nature” holds great promise for biohydrogen applications, and this has been demonstrated by the emergence of bioengineering strategies used to design synthetic metabolic pathways and improve the O2 tolerance of hydrogenases. This chapter provides an overview of the diversity and physiological role of hydrogenases, with a particular emphasis on their biotechnological potential.

It is rarely publicly understood that the extent of human adaptation to, and alteration of, tropical forest environments extends across archaeological, historical, and anthropological timescales. This book is the first attempt to bring together evidence for the nature of human interactions with tropical forests on a global scale, from the emergence of hominins in the tropical forests of Africa to modern conservation issues. Following a review of the natural history and variability of tropical forest ecosystems, this book takes a tour of human, and human ancestor, occupation and use of tropical forest environments through time. Far from being pristine, primordial ecosystems, this book illustrates how our species has inhabited and modified tropical forests from the earliest stages of its evolution. Or do we allow a primitive human emotion, disgust, to guide us in our lawmaking?
