2016 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Since the 2006 coup d'état, Thailand has been riven by two opposing political visions: one which aspires to a modern democracy and the rule of law, and another which holds to the traditional conception of a kingdom ruled by an exemplary Buddhist monarch. Thailand has one of the world's largest populations of observant Buddhists and one of its last politically active monarchies. This book examines the Theravada Buddhist foundations of Thailand's longstanding institution of monarchy. Patrick Jory states that the storehouse of monarchical ideology is to be found in the popular literary genre known as the Jātakas, tales of the Buddha's past lives. The best-known of these, the Vessantara Jātaka, disseminated an ideal of an infinitely generous prince as a bodhisatta or future Buddha—an ideal which remains influential in Thailand today. Using primary and secondary source materials largely unknown in Western scholarship, Jory traces the history of the Vessantara Jātaka and its political-cultural importance from the ancient to the modern period. Although pressures from European colonial powers and Buddhist reformers led eventually to a revised political conception of the monarchy, the older Buddhist ideal of kingship has yet endured.

Particle separation from hot gases is a challenging task, especially for nanoparticles. Therefore, it is usually avoided by quenching the hot gas to conduct particle separation at a more convenient temperature. In these cases, valuable high-caloric heat is either not utilized at all or only inefficiently because of particle deposition on the heat exchanger surfaces. Valuable potential is thus wasted, as high-temperature processes are already an essential part of many industries and become increasingly relevant for other industrial sectors (e.g., pyrolytic processes in the circular economy). To reduce operating costs and environmental impact, the efficient use of resources (especially fossil fuels) is an absolute necessity. To tackle this pending problem, the concept of high-temperature electrostatic precipitation is investigated in this doctoral thesis. In an electrostatic precipitator, particles are charged by charge carriers produced in a corona discharge near the discharge electrode. Charged particles migrate due to the electric field and subsequently precipitate onto the collection electrode. This doctoral thesis clearly demonstrates the feasibility of nanoparticle removal from hot gases at up to 1073 K (800 °C) using electrostatic precipitation while presenting novel insights into the charge carrier properties and their distribution, the influence of thermionic emission on the operation of electrostatic precipitators, and the fundamentals of particle charging at high temperatures.

Not surprisingly 7th Armoured Division was one of these and they were deployed from Italy to England. In this fine account the author who fought alongside the Desert Rats describes the Divisions battles from the beaches, the breakout battles (Goodwood and Bluecoat), the liberation of Northern France and Belgium. After taking Ghent there were the long months fighting in the Peel country of the Netherlands before Operation BLACKCOCK, the Rhine Crossing and the final advance into Germany, the capture of Hamburg and the Allies triumphant entry into Berlin. No reader of this magnificent history, with its many personal accounts, will question why the Desert Rats wore and still wear their Jerboa insignia with such pride.

A masterful, epic account of the Spanish Ulcer that drained Napoleon's resources and played a pivotal role in the end of his domination of Europe. The author served with distinction in the actions of the Light Division, such as the epic march to Talavera, the battles of Fuentes d’Oñoro, Salamanca, Nivelle, Orthes and Toulouse. He left the service a General and Knight Commander of the Order of Bath. Napier’s History would rank as the most important history to be written by an actual participant, and was as controversial with his countrymen as amoung his contemporaries on the Continent. In Napier’s concluding volume [End of 1813 – April 1814], he chronicles the last says of the first reign of Napoleon as Wellington forcefully shifts Marshal Soult from each position and passes each defensive line with great skill. Despite the successful battle of Orthez (or Orthes), Wellington is beset with problems, he has to dispense of the services of his Spanish allies, whose looting has become a liability, along with the millstone of their internal power struggle between Ferdinand, recently released by Napoleon to sow discord, and the ruling classes. Stripped of a large part of his manpower, he pushes onward, Wellington fights the controversial battle of Toulouse and in spite of mistimed attacks, and one of his best generals dis-obeying orders he pushes Soult further back into France. The timing of news of the abdication of Napoleon from Paris is the subject to much debate and is weighed by Napier in favour of Soult, and with the final action of the war, the sally from Bayonne the hostilities come to and end until the Hundred Days. Also included in this volume but missing from the earlier editions are his defences, ripostes and counters to the carping and criticism of his initial publications, much of it emanating from Marshal Beresford stung by Napier’s harsh judgement of the battle of Albuera

By the end of the 1960s, the Hollywood West of Tom Mix, Randolph Scott, and even John Wayne was passé—or so the story goes. Many film historians and critics have argued that movies portraying a mythic American West gave way to revisionist films that influential filmmakers such as Sam Peckinpah and Robert Altman made as violent critiques of the Western’s “golden years.” Yet rumors surrounding the death of the Western have been greatly exaggerated, says film historian Andrew Patrick Nelson. Even as the Wild Bunch and John McCabe rode forth, John Wayne remained the Western’s number one box office draw. How, then, could there have been a revisionist reckoning at a time when the Duke was still in the saddle? In Still in the Saddle, Nelson offers readers a new history of the Hollywood Western in the 1970s, a time when filmmakers tried to revive the genre by appealing to a diverse audience that included a new generation of socially conscious viewers. Nelson considers a comprehensive filmography of releases from 1969 to 1980 in light of the visual tropes and narratives developed and reworked in the genre from the 1930s to the present. In so doing, he reveals the complexity of what is probably the most interesting period in Western movie history. His incisive reevaluations of such celebrated (or infamous) films as The Wild Bunch and Heaven’s Gate and examinations of dozens of forgotten and neglected Westerns, including the final films of John Wayne, demonstrate that there was more to the 1970s Western than simple revision. Instead, we see not only important connections between canonical and lesser-known films of the period, but also continuities between these and older Westerns. Nelson believes an ongoing, cyclical process of regeneration thus transcends established divisions in the genre’s history. Among the books currently challenging the prevailing “evolutionary” account of the Western, Still in the Saddle thoroughly revises our understanding of this exciting and misunderstood period in the Western’s history and adds innovatively and substantially to our knowledge of the genre as a whole.
