The year is 1738; the place, Paris. A baby is born under a fish-monger’s bloody table in a marketplace, and abandoned. Orphaned, passed over to the monks as a charity case, already there is something in the aura of the tiny infant that is unsettling. No one will look after him; he is somehow too demanding, and, even more disturbing, something is missing: as his wet nurse tries to explain, he doesn’t smell the way a baby should smell; indeed, he has no scent at all. Slowly, as we watch Jean-Baptiste Grenouille cling stubbornly to life, we begin to realize that a monster is growing before our eyes. With mounting unease, yet hypnotized, we see him explore his powers and their effect on the world around him. For this dark and sinister boy who has no smell himself possesses an absolute sense of smell, and with it he can read the world to discover the hidden truths that elude ordinary men. He can smell the very composition of objects, and their history, and where they have been, he has no need of the light, and darkness is not dark to him, because nothing can mask the odors of the universe. As he leaves childhood behind and comes to understand his terrible uniqueness, his obsession becomes the quest to identify, and then to isolate, the most perfect scent of all, the scent of life itself. At first, he hones his powers, learning the ancient arts of perfume-making until the exquisite fragrances he creates are the rage of Paris, and indeed Europe. Then, secure in his mastery of these means to an end, he withdraws into a strange and agonized solitude, waiting, dreaming, until the morning when he wakes, ready to embark on his monstrous quest: to find and extract from the most perfect living creatures—the most beautiful young virgins in the land— that ultimate perfume which alone can make him, too, fully human. As his trail leads him, at an ever-quickening pace, from his savage exile to the heart of the country and then back to Paris, we are caught up in a rising storm of terror and mortal sensual conquest until the frenzy of his final triumph explodes in all its horrifying consequences. Told with dazzling narrative brilliance and the haunting power of a grown-up fairy tale, Perfume is one of the most remarkable novels of the last fifty years.
An odorless baby orphaned in a Paris gutter in 1738 grows to become a monster obsessed with his perfect sense of smell, and a desire to capture, by any means, the ultimate scent which will make him human

Fort-Dimanche, Dungeon of Death is a vivid testimony of the most horrendous kind of mental and physical cruelties that we can inflict on our fellow men. Patrick Lemoine’s harrowing tale about his years of imprisonment in one of the worse dungeons in the world will stand as a constant reminder that our basic freedoms, when taken for granted, can be trampled by the very ones elected or selected among us to be sentinels of society. Jonathan Demme, filmmaker and producer, USA This book is an implacable referendum against dictatorship. Its sole ideology is to proclaim freedom of thought and expression. This book must be read by anyone who wants to know, especially by the young who should know, because it is difficult for them to imagine the unthinkable... Jean Desquiron, Le Nouvelliste, Port-au-Prince, Haiti It is a disturbing testimonial on the physical and moral degradation of human beings orchestrated by the militia of a totalitarian regime. Patrick Lemoine's surgical description of a long descent into Duvalier's dungeons leaves us completely numb. Other books have been written on the subject, but none offers such a detailed account of this historical legacy. Yves-Robert Dougé, M.D., Pour Haiti, Paris, France Written in a soft literary style, yet concise, detailed, and captivating [...], this book remains the most acerbic discourse on the vicious cruelty of a political class mired in cynicism and debauchery...! Haiti-Observateur, New York, USA It is necessary to read this book in its entirety, even when you are tempted to hide it, to bury it, as if it would prevent forever such horrible acts from occuring again... Elsie Ethéart, Haiti en Marche, Miami, USA

While the importance of writing has often been recognized, the role of books and especially that of libraries has just as often been slighted. Knowledge, once generated, has to be communicated, preserved, and accessible. Books in their varying formats—from clay tablets to scrolls and manuscripts to pixels—have been instrumental in spreading knowledge, although relatively little attention has been given to the story of books themselves. A Social History of Books and Libraries from Cuneiform to Bytes traces the roles of books and libraries throughout recorded history and explores their social and cultural importance within differing societies and changing times. It presents the history of books from clay tablets to e-books and the history of libraries, whether built of bricks or bytes. Following an introduction that sets the theoretical basis for the historical importance of books and libraries, chapters alternate between the history of the book and the history of libraries. Included within the chapters are short excursions on some particular development, such as book emblems or cataloging. Case studies are given as thematic illustrations of libraries everywhere. Patrick M. Valentine argues that social and cultural forces have been more influential in determining the nature and status of information, books, and libraries than has technology. But A Social History of Books and Libraries is far from a jeremiad against technology; rather it presents history within the subtle yet shifting context of time and place. Although written primarily for librarians and library students, it will also be of interest to a wider audience of scholars and those interested in books, libraries, and cultural history.

The quest to write a geographical book leading up to the two-hundredth anniversary of this conflict, known as the War of 1812, that created two North American countries we enjoy today, began in 2006, with the goal to visit as many historical sites as possible. We started searching for roadside markers, plaques, monuments, cemeteries, the tombstones to the fallen, fortifications, battlefields and those who fought in this war, and to tell the readers the stories behind them. Searching for the Forgotten War 1812, was an experience that was more than we expected in terms of the wonderful people we met along the way.
The Roman Catholics have a long and storied history in the United States. From colonial times to the present, this group has seen its share of ups and downs, and has recently come under heated and extensive scrutiny. There is, however, a richer and more interesting history to this important denomination, and Carey details it here. Beginning with an overview of the transplanting of this faith into the New World, the author then details the extensive involvement this community has had in civil and political affairs, social and cultural milieus, and family and everyday life. Focusing on the people and events that have shaped Roman Catholicism in the United States, this broad history introduces readers to a vital American community. Beginning with a narrative history of Catholics and Catholicism in America, Carey brings the discussion through to current times, addressing the recent problems in the Church, women's roles, and responses to terrorism and war. He then goes on to include brief biographical sketches of important figures in the Church, and offers a chronology of key events. The result is one of the most comprehensive histories of Catholics in America available.

On September 6, 1870, Wyoming was the first state to give women the right to vote, and on March 1, 1872, Yellowstone became the world's first National Park. JCPenney opened its doors in Kemmerer on April 14, 1902, while May 1, 1883, marks Buffalo Bill Cody's very first Wild West Show. The first major biography of the author of Suite Française The posthumous publication of Suite Française won Irène Némirovsky international acclaim and brought millions of readers to her work. But the story of her own life was no less dramatic and moving than her most powerful fiction. With her family, she escaped Russia in 1919 and settled in Paris, where she met and married fellow Jewish émigré Michel Epstein. In 1929 she published her highly acclaimed and controversial novel David Golder, the first of many successful books that established her stellar reputation. But when France fell to the Nazis, her renown did her little good: without French citizenship, she was forced to seek refuge in a small Burgundy village with her husband and their two young daughters. And in July 1942 Némirovsky was arrested and deported to Auschwitz, where she died the following month. Drawing on Némirovsky’s diaries, previously untapped archival material, and interviews, her biographers give us at once an intimate picture of her life and turbulent times and an illuminating examination of the ways in which she used the details of her remarkable life to create “some of the greatest, most humane, and incisive fiction [World War II] has produced” (The New York Times Book Review).
