Alturas and Lake Garfield are located in the heart of central Florida. Founded in the early 20th century, the area, nestled quietly among oaks, yellow pines, and beautiful natural lakes, attracted land seekers and developers. Alturas was projected to be the next "Capital of Florida Agriculture" with its roads, local hotel, multiple churches, and a center for the emerging Florida citrus industry. The anticipated metropolis never materialized, but it has endured the test of time as a wonderful location to enjoy a country lifestyle and raise children. Lake Garfield was established when the Roux family opened a large sawmill complex and created jobs for hundreds of employees. Many tenant houses, built by the sawmill, stretched along its streets. The decline of Lake Garfield began with the 1942 closing of the Roux Crate and Lumber Sawmill after the stands of yellow pine had been logged out. The progeny of the early arrivals still resides in the community.

Geotechnical Engineering of Dams, 2nd edition provides a comprehensive text on the geotechnical and geological aspects of the investigations for and the design and construction of new dams and the review and assessment of existing dams. Major output collapses are costly and frequent in the developing world. Using cross-country data, we classify five-year periods using a two-dimensional state space based on growth regimes and political institutions. We then model the joint evolution of output growth and political institutions as a finite state Markov chain, and study how countries move between states. We find that growth is more likely to be sustained under democracy than under autocracy; output collapses are more persistent under autocracy; and stagnation under autocracy can give way to outright collapse. Democratic countries appear to be more resilient.

Public opinion polls have become increasingly prominent during elections, but how they affect voting behaviour remains uncertain. In this work, we estimate the effects of poll exposure using an experimental design in which we randomly assign the availability of polls to participants in simulated election campaigns. We draw upon results from ten independent experiments conducted across six countries on four continents (Argentina, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States) to examine how polls affect the amount of information individuals seek and the votes that they cast. We further assess how poll effects differ according to individual-level factors, such as partisanship and political sophistication, and the content included in polls and how it is presented. Our work provides a comprehensive assessment of the power of polls and the implications for poll reporting in contemporary elections.
