Skyline is a vibrant novel set in contemporary times in a run-down block of flats in Long Street, central Cape Town. Through this novel, narrated by an adolescent girl, the book explores the lives of African refugees who come to South Africa seeking a new life and better place, having fled wars and poverty in their own countries. The narrator and her sister befriend a warm and caring refugee from Mozambique called Bernard. They help him battle the terrible sadness and loneliness his country's civil war has inflicted upon him. He in turn, along with others from Zimbabwe, Sudan and Congo, introduces the sisters to the music, wisdom and energy of Africa. There is sadness in this story, for it gives a hard look at the emotional carnage caused by war. But there is also hope and humour and friendship.

Skyline se déroule dans une Afrique du Sud nouvellement démocratique, dirigée par Nelson Mandela. Le pays est devenu un refuge pour les habitants de nombreux pays voisins, déchirés par la guerre et économiquement exsangues. La narratrice est une adolescente qui rêve d'une vie meilleure – et de devenir écrivain. Celle-ci vit avec sa mère et sa soeur dans un immeuble délabré, au centre de la ville du Cap. Le bâtiment abrite des dealers nigériens, des ouvriers du Zimbabwe, des émigrés du Rwanda et du Soudan, des réfugiés du Mozambique, un couple d'aveugles, un couple de travestis, des animateurs de boîtes de nuit, une vieille dame allemande, etc., avec lesquels la narratrice et sa soeur vont se lier d'amitié. L'un des résidents de l'immeuble, Bernard Sebastião, est un survivant de la guerre du Mozambique. Hanté par la perte de ses enfants et de sa femme, il trouve du réconfort dans sa relation avec les deux jeunes filles. Chaque chapitre se termine par la description d'un tableau qu'il a peint, basé sur son interprétation de diverses oeuvres de l'art occidental. C'est à travers ces tableaux que le roman révèle son coeur profond : le questionnement sur la répétition de la guerre et ses effets sur les gens ordinaires.
