In its seventeenth-century heyday, the English broadside ballad was a single large sheet of paper printed on one side with multiple woodcut illustrations, a popular tune title, and a poem. Inexpensive, ubiquitous, and fugitive—individual elements migrated freely from one broadside to another—some 11,000 to 12,000 of these artifacts pre-1701 survive, though many others have undoubtedly been lost. Since 2003, Patricia Fumerton and a team of associates at the University of California, Santa Barbara have been finding, digitizing, cataloging, and recording these materials to create the English Broadside Ballad Archive. In this magisterial and long-awaited volume, Fumerton presents a rich display of the fruits of this work. She tracks the fragmentary assembling and disassembling of two unique extant editions of one broadside ballad and examines the loose network of seventeenth-century ballad collectors who archived what were essentially ephemeral productions. She pays particular attention to Samuel Pepys, who collected and bound into five volumes more than 1,800 ballads, and whose preoccupations with black-letter print, gender, and politics are reflected in and extend beyond his collecting practices. Offering an extensive and expansive reading of an extremely popular and sensational ballad that was printed at least 37 times before 1701, Fumerton highlights the ballad genre's ability to move audiences across time and space. In a concluding chapter, she looks to Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale to analyze the performative potential ballads have in comparison with staged drama. A broadside ballad cannot be "read" without reading it in relation to its images and its tune, Fumerton argues. To that end, The Broadside Ballad in Early Modern England features more than 80 illustrations and directs its readers to a specially constructed online archive where they can easily access 48 audio files of ballad music.

The United States has experienced a period of prolonged and unprecedented carceral state control and growth over the last forty years. This immense growth reflects changes in sentencing policies, including mandatory and determinate terms for a broader range of offenses and an emphasis on punishment rather than rehabilitation. In what Frost and Clear (2009) described as the "grand social experiment of mass incarceration," more people go into prison for more extended periods, creating a buildup that harms adults, children, families, communities, and society. The justification for incarceration has been seeded in two ideas: incapacitation-separating "bad actors" from would-be victims---and deterrence, discouraging repeat crimes due to the fear of punishment. In what is referred to as the "prison paradox" (Steman, 2017), an analysis of the imprisonment and crime rate relationship for the last two decades has shown that increased incarceration has had a weak connection to lowered crime rates. Steman describes other factors that explain the decrease in crime rates, including an aging population, increased employment and wages, boosted consumer confidence, enlarged law enforcement personnel, and different policing strategies"--
With the publication of the new Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), and the recent release of the draft diagnostic criteria to be used in the forthcoming International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11), students, researchers, and clinicians are in need of an authoritative and practical guide to understanding the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in childhood and adolescence. This is particularly the case given that, other than designating a separate diagnosis with a smaller number of symptoms for preschoolers, these new diagnostic compendia provide little information regarding developmental differences in the onset, expression, and course of the disorder. Child and adolescent mental health professionals—whether they are students in training, practitioners, or scientists—will benefit from this book’s summaries of the available research on PTSD in young persons, descriptions of how the expression and consequences of PTSD might change across developmental periods, and suggested strategies for differential diagnosis between PTSD and other disruptive behavioral and emotional disorders that present with overlapping symptoms across childhood and adolescence. Resorts have become important to American society and its economy; one in eight Americans is now employed by the tourism industry. Yet despite the ubiquity of hotels, little has been written about those who labor there. Drawing on eight years of participant observation and in-depth interviews, the renowned ethnographers Patricia A. Adler and Peter Adler reveal the occupational culture and lifestyles of workers at five luxury Hawaiian resorts. These resorts employ a workforce that is diverse in gender, class, ethnicity, and nationality. Hawaiian resort workers, like those in nearly all resorts, consist of four groups. New immigrants hold difficult and dirty low-status jobs for little pay. Locals provide an authentic Polynesian flavor for guests, a ready pool of youthful high-turnover employees, and a population trapped in a place that offers few occupational alternatives. Managers tend to be middle-class, college-educated young and middle-aged men from the mainland whose lifestyles are occupationally transient. Seekers, mostly young, white, and from the mainland as well, escape to paradise seeking adventure, warmth, extreme sports, or some alternate life experiences. The Adlers describe the work, lives, and careers of these four groups that labor in organizations that never close, with shifts scheduled around the clock and around the year. Paradise Laborers adds to the growing interest in the global flow of labor, as these immigrant workers display different trends in gendered opportunities and mobility than those exhibited by other groups. The authors propose a political economy of tourist labor in which they compare the different expectations and rewards of organizations, employees, and local labor markets.
