A saijiki combines elements of a nature guide and haiku poetry. Beautiful photographs and art accompany descriptions of seasonal occurrences of natural phenomena and human activities in the San Francisco Bay Area. Each element is accompanied by haiku that evoke an emotional or spiritual aspect of the human interaction with the natural world.
A collection of 108 haiku poems to heighten awareness and deepen our appreciation for the ordinary in everyday life Haiku, the Japanese form of poetry written in just three lines, can be miraculous in its power to articulate the profundity of the simplest moment—and for that reason haiku can be a useful tool for bringing us to a heightened awareness of our lives. Here, the poet Patricia Donegan shares her experience of the haiku form as a way of insight that anyone can use to slow down and uncover the beauty of ordinary moments. She presents 108 haiku poems—on themes such as honesty, transience, and compassion—and offers commentary on each as an impetus to meditation and as a key to unlocking the wonder in what we find right before us.
Three artists bring together three arts, painting, poetry and calligraphy in a charming juxtaposition of word and image. Watercolor paintings of North American birds are matched with haiku poems inspired by the paintings. The text is hand written in a font especially designed for this book.
These landscape brush paintings were originally painted in a 1 x 1 foot accordian-folded book. Pei Jen Hau, my teacher, brought me to these places through his art and teaching. The lessons were about more than painting-- they were about how to live life by developing one's character through study, endurance, and heart. And always with joy."--Page 4 of cover
