❤ Slam dunk? Not in their season of desire ❤ ** RITA Finalist ** "Fast-paced and funny but soulful and deep.... Just right. That's what I thought of Hoops." -- 5-star review The Coach and the Professor… Carolyn Trent's logically mapped journey to becoming the perfect professor of English is hijacked the day she is appointed academic advisor to the Ashton University men's basketball team. Especially when she meets C.J. Draper, a former pro player now the team's infuriating, irreverent, and sexy new coach, and discovers he's the hijacker of her careful plans. She thoroughly disapproves of her beloved Ashton's jump to big-time basketball, but how can she say no to safeguarding the academic progress of the players? As for saying no to the coach . . . surely she'll get better with more practice. And there will be plenty of practice, because they’ll have to work together all seasons for the benefit of the players. C.J. has never let adversity stop him — if he had he'd never have gotten this far. He's not about to start by letting enticing Professor Trent derail him. He has goals. Ashton’s small-town campus is just one rung on his ladder up. Mary Draper Ingles was a real, live pioneer heroine who lived through a Shawnee Indian attack, kidnapping, and escape, to walk almost 800 miles back home to her family. This is a true story of courage, love and sense of family.
In Peveroni's play, several generations of an immigrant/Uruguayan family break conventional matrimonial bonds and familial ties, in order to replicate them in incestuous and sinister ways with the family tree. These 'fractal' relationships stretch across three generations and span Uruguay's twentieth and twenty-first centuries' realities. The play designates several periods of interest: 1930, 1968, 1975, and 2001. These moments mirror either international events such as the Great Depression, world-wide student protests, and the September 11th attacks in New York, or regional activities like the centennial celebration of Uruguay's first Constitution of 1830 and the dictatorships of the 1970s and 1980s."--P. 6.
Although historians have assumed previously that early Kentucky was a one-party area, Watlington has discovered that there were actually three active parties--the partisan," "court," and "country." From the land-grant maze following the 1779 migration, through a brief Tory movement and even James Wilkinson's intrigue for a Spanish connection, she traces the parties' development and their struggle for power in the vigorous world of postrevolutionary Kentucky politics." In 1853, emancipationist Cassius M. Clay gave a portion of his land holdings in central Kentucky to Rev. John G. Fee. Together they had a vision of building a community for all people of the earth, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, or class. Berea College was founded in 1855 with the same principles in mind, becoming the first interracial and coeducational college in the South. By the 1920s, Berea was a popular stopping point for travelers driving the Dixie Highway, highlighted by the Boone Tavern, which opened in 1909. Images of America: Berea takes readers on a pictorial journey of Bereas history, the growth of the college, and the flourishing artisan community with more than 200 images selected from the extensive Berea College Archives, private collections, and other sources.

She stirs his protectiveness, his penchant for the underdog, and, possibly, certain other reactions he's not about to indulge. So he's going to do his damnedest to make sure Katie gets all she deserves, including the crown that might be hers by right ... even though it means Her Royal Highness will never again look at a basketball coach from Wisconsin like he's the king of her heart. What does it mean for a child to be a "reader" and how did American culture come to place such a high value on this identity? Reading Children offers a history of the relationship between children and books in Anglo-American modernity, exploring long-lived but now forgotten early children's literature, discredited yet highly influential pedagogical practices, the property lessons inherent in children's book ownership, and the emergence of childhood itself as a literary property. The nursery and schoolroom version of the social contract, Crain argues, underwrote children's entry not only into reading and writing but also into a world of commodity and property relations. Increasingly positioned as an indispensable form of cultural capital by the end of the eighteenth century, literacy became both the means and the symbol of children's newly recognized self-possession and autonomy. At the same time, as children's legal and economic status was changing, "childhood" emerged as an object of nostalgia for adults. Literature for children enacted the terms of children's self-possession, often with explicit references to property, contracts, or inheritances, and yet also framed adult longing for an imagined past called "childhood." Dozens of colorful illustrations chart the ways in which early literature for children was transformed into spectacle through new image technologies and a burgeoning marketplace that capitalized on nostalgic fantasies of childhood conflated with bowdlerized fantasies of history. Reading Children offers new terms for thinking about the imbricated and mutually constitutive histories of literacy, property, and childhood in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries that ground current anxieties and long-held beliefs about childhood and reading.
Artfully combines personal narrative, ethnographic insight, and an artisan’s treatise on material culture and production techniques to bring quotidian Caribbean ceramic wares to life as material expressions of cultural adaptation and markers of the region’s socio-economic history."--Michael R. McDonald, author of Food Culture in Central America "Weaves a complex history that links the Caribbean with Africa, Europe, the Americas, and India and draws together threads from indigenous cultures to the impact of the slave trade, indentured workers, colonial rulers, postcolonial politics, and global tourism."--Moira Vincentelli, author of Women Potters: Transforming Traditions "In the field of indigenous ceramics, cross-regional research is becoming increasingly important for potters, students, and scholars alike. Fay establishes a solid base for both further regional research and global comparative work."--Elizabeth Perrill, author of Zulu Pottery "Provides a historical and social context for the heritage of traditional ceramics in the contemporary Caribbean and at the same time grounds it in the everyday practice of potters."--Mark W. Hauser, author of An Archaeology of Black Markets: Local Ceramics and Economies in Eighteenth-Century Jamaica Beautifully illustrated with richly detailed photographs, this volume traces the living heritage of locally made pottery in the English-speaking Caribbean. Patricia Fay combines her own expertise in making ceramics with two decades of interviews, visits, and participant-observation in the region, providing a perspective that is technically informed and anthropologically rigorous. Through the analysis of ceramic methods, Fay reveals that the traditional skills of local potters in the Caribbean are inherited from diverse points of origin in Africa, Europe, India, and the Americas. At the heart of the book is an in-depth discussion of the women potters of Choiseul, Saint Lucia, whose self-sufficient Creole lifestyle emerged in the nineteenth century following the emancipation of plantation slaves. Using methods inherited from Africa, today’s potters adapt heritage practice for new contexts. In Nevis, Antigua, and Jamaica, related pottery traditions reveal skill sets derived from multiple West and Central African influences, and in the case of Jamaica, launched ceramics as a contemporary art form. In Barbados, colonial wheel and kiln technologies imported from England are evident in the many productive clay studios on the island. In Trinidad, Hindu ritual vessels are a key feature of a ceramic tradition that arrived with indentured labor from India, and in Guyana potters in both village and urban settings preserve indigenous Amerindian culture. Fay emphasizes the integral role relationships between mothers and daughters play in the transmission of skills from generation to generation. Since most pottery produced is intended for domestic use as cooking pots, serving vessels, and for water storage, women have been key to sustaining these traditions. But Fay’s work also shows that these pots have value beyond their everyday usefulness. In the process of forming and firing, the diverse cultural heritage of the Caribbean becomes manifest, exemplifying the continuing encounter between old and new, local and global, and traditional and contemporary. A volume in the series Latin American and Caribbean Arts and Culture, funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
