In Frege's Conception of Logic Patricia A. Blanchette explores the relationship between Gottlob Frege's understanding of conceptual analysis and his understanding of logic. She argues that the fruitfulness of Frege's conception of logic, and the illuminating differences between that conception and those more modern views that have largely supplanted it, are best understood against the backdrop of a clear account of the role of conceptual analysis in logical investigation. The first part of the book locates the role of conceptual analysis in Frege's logicist project. Blanchette argues that despite a number of difficulties, Frege's use of analysis in the service of logicism is a powerful and coherent tool. As a result of coming to grips with his use of that tool, we can see that there is, despite appearances, no conflict between Frege's intention to demonstrate the grounds of ordinary arithmetic and the fact that the numerals of his derived sentences fail to co-refer with ordinary numerals. In the second part of the book, Blanchette explores the resulting conception of logic itself, and some of the straightforward ways in which Frege's conception differs from its now-familiar descendants. In particular, Blanchette argues that consistency, as Frege understands it, differs significantly from the kind of consistency demonstrable via the construction of models. To appreciate this difference is to appreciate the extent to which Frege was right in his debate with Hilbert over consistency- and independence-proofs in geometry. For similar reasons, modern results such as the completeness of formal systems and the categoricity of theories do not have for Frege the same importance they are commonly taken to have by his post-Tarskian descendants. These differences, together with the coherence of Frege's position, provide reason for caution with respect to the appeal to formal systems and their properties in the treatment of fundamental logical properties and relations.

Plasma treatment is a novel and promising technolgy in the field of wood surface modification. Deposition of micro-particles on wood surfaces by means of plasma is an interesting approach to enhance wood properties and thus, to extend the service life of wood products. On the other hand, several silicone fomulations have been already shown to cause excellent water repellence and interaction with cell wall components, beside to impart high chenical and weathering stability as well as biological resistance in treated wood. Based on that, this study focussed on both treatments seperately in an initial stage of the research; followed by the combination, in a two-step treatment, of vacuum-pressure impregnation of solid wook with siloxanes and additional copper deposition on wood surface using atmostpheric pressure plasma.

In 1996, Dr. Nancy Olivieri identified an unexpected risk associated with a drug she was testing to treat a rare blood disorder. When she moved to inform patients of this risk as required by medical ethics, the drug manufacturer, Apotex, terminated the research trial and threatened to take legal action. This was the opening salvo in a long contest involving Olivieri, Apotex, Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, and the University of Toronto. Olivieri expected to receive support on the ethical issue from the hospital and the university, but neither institution provided effective support against ongoing legal harassment by Apotex. Intense media coverage followed the case from beginning to end. The Olivieri Report is the report of an independent inquiry--commissioned by the Canadian Association of University Teachers--into the case, conducted by three widely respected Canadian academics.

As biological anthropologists the editors of this volume feel that an evolutionary approach combining both aspects is essential. One of the goals of their book is to incorporate data from diverse fields to present a more holistic view of breastfeeding, through the inclusion of research from a number of different disciplines, including biological and social/cultural anthropology, nutrition, and medicine. The resulting book, presenting the complexity of the issues surrounding very basic decisions about infant nutrition, will fill a void in the existing literature on breastfeeding.

Follow a Michigan town from the time families from New York and Pennsylvania settled Potawatomi land in the 1830s to the Civil War. Cameron flourished as a farm market while Michigan grew rich on lumber. Local industries expanded when Detroit built automobiles, stoves and refrigerators. The diverse community suffered when conglomerates bought the plants, laid off workers, and then moved production to Mexico. Camerons history is the story of people who moved west or north, spent a few years or a few generations, then moved on. Potawatomi are now in Oklahoma and Kansas. Peabodys and Fitches were replaced by Germans and Dutch who remigrated from the Delaware river valley. Then came immigrants from Pomerania and Bavaria, followed by Italians and Ukrainians, then refugees from the Balkans and Baltics. Later, Blacks moved from Pensacola and Spanish speakers from Brownsville. Today, doctors arrive from India. Cameron, a microcosm of Michigan and Midwestern history.
