Some of these stories are actually life and death situations from which Almighty God spared those involved. Some stories are heart rendering, some are like watching a thriller on television, and some will make you smile and laugh. Enjoy! AUTHOR BIO Patricia F. Thomas was born in Edwardsville, Pennsylvania in March 1936. Her love of reading and writing began in school and continues to this day. When she was a Reading Aide a number of years ago at a local grade school teaching second and third graders, she wrote several stories for the kids. She and the children also wrote a fun Christmas play with each child having a part using hand puppets sewn by her Sister, Sharon. They presented the play for the Principal of the school and he thought it was wonderful. Patricia firmly believes education is the key to a strong foundation for life. She especially believes reading and the comprehension thereof is of the utmost importance. Her favorite past-time is, of course, reading. Patricia and her family relocated to California in the early 60's for her health and their son's health concerns. It has been a great adventure living on the west coast. Although Patricia is 74, she still works full time as an administrative assistant for a local architectural firm. Patricia has a husband, two sons, two grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She believes having this book published will hopefully bring enlightenment, understanding and appreciation for all God does for His children.
Mother/son and son/father dynamics are explored in these plays about life decisions, heritage, and identity among immigrant protagonists pursuing the American Dream in New Bedford, Massachusetts
How would you capture winter’s crispness, spring’s softness, summer’s freshness, and autumn’s richness? In this inspiring title, poet Patricia Thomas imagines each season rendered in a different art medium. Pen and ink, with spots of color, capture winter’s mood, while pastel chalks make spring flowers bloom into life. The see-through hues of watercolors celebrate summer’s warmth, while vibrant oils perfectly paint fall’s majestic scenes. Artist Craig Orback takes up the poem’s challenge in his marvelous illustrations, using each of the mediums described. Just as the seasons move seamlessly into one another, so too do the art styles blend together, then emerge in full splendor, and blend again as the next season approaches.
Five-year-old Thomas has a lot to complain about. His father has left him in charge of a house full of girls while he fights in the Iraq war, he has growing pains in his legs, and then he overhears his mother talking about moving far away from their grandparents' ranch to live in a big city. How will he cope with all these changes?
Thomas Day (1801-61), a free man of color from Milton, North Carolina, became the most successful cabinetmaker in North Carolina--white or black--during a time when most blacks were enslaved and free blacks were restricted in their movements and activities. His surviving furniture and architectural woodwork still represent the best of nineteenth-century craftsmanship and aesthetics. In this lavishly illustrated book, Patricia Phillips Marshall and Jo Ramsay Leimenstoll show how Day plotted a carefully charted course for success in antebellum southern society. Beginning in the 1820s, he produced fine furniture for leading white citizens and in the 1840s and '50s diversified his offerings to produce newel posts, stair brackets, and distinctive mantels for many of the same clients. As demand for his services increased, the technological improvements Day incorporated into his shop contributed to the complexity of his designs. Day's style, characterized by undulating shapes, fluid lines, and spiraling forms, melded his own unique motifs with popular design forms, resulting in a distinctive interpretation readily identified to his shop. The photographs in the book document furniture in public and private collections and architectural woodwork from private homes not previously associated with Day. The book provides information on more than 160 pieces of furniture and architectural woodwork that Day produced for 80 structures between 1835 and 1861. Through in-depth analysis and generous illustrations, including over 240 photographs (20 in full color) and architectural photography by Tim Buchman, Marshall and Leimenstoll provide a comprehensive perspective on and a new understanding of the powerful sense of aesthetics and design that mark Day's legacy.
Capturing a glimpse into the life of a Catholic torn between his faith and duty to his country, this 33rd volume in the Encounter the Saints series familiarizes children 9-12 with the life story of Saint Thomas More. He is a timely example for young people in the current culture that is often contrary to the teachings of the Church. With his assistance, children will be inspired and encouraged to stand up for their faith in all situations, regardless of the sacrifice.
Marshall and Leimenstoll have researched Day's remarkable life and work thoroughly, identifying a great quantity of his known and attributed furniture and interior woodwork, finding myriad published sources for his design elements, and examining a wide range of documents to trace his career and describe his world. Their research, along with the wealth of images of Day's unique furniture and interiors, constitutes a book of major, lasting value. "Catherine Bishir, author of North Carolina Architecture "This book, featuring the story and workmanship of Thomas Day, a free man of color in slaveholding North Carolina, is a fascinating addition to the corpus of literature concerning the anomalies and complexities of life in the Old South. A slaveholder as well as a skilled craftsman, Thomas Day occupied an unusual and privileged position. These fine illustrations of his craftsmanship help to explain why. "Daniel c. Littlefield, University of South Carolina "Thomas Day's creative genius, his skill in the design and fabrication of furniture and decorative woodwork, and the scope of his business establish him as a major founder of the North Carolina furniture industry.
