The Maginot Line, the complex system of strongpoints constructed between the world wars by the French to protect against attack from Germany, is one of the most famous, extensive and controversial defensive schemes in all military history. It stretched from Belgium to Switzerland, and from Switzerland to the Mediterranean, and it represented the most advanced and ambitious system of static defenses of its time. Yet it failed to deter German aggression or to halt the invasion of France in May 1940.Much of this historic line - with its fortresses, artillery positions, tank traps, blockhouses, concrete bunkers - has survived and can be visited today. With its unique emphasis on ethnic cooperation rather than discord, this work provides insights into how the international community can help to restrain ethnic conflict in the Twenty First century. By examining the construction of ethnic peace in post-Soviet Eastern Europe, Patrice McMahon accurately describes how the international community worked to quell growing tensions in the East. Key was a network of public and private organizations whose goal it was to work in overlapping ways to manage inter-ethnic relations, which in turn kept ethnically charged clashes far below levels forecast. Inspired by the Conference on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), this network included Western governments, intergovernmental organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations. Although each actor had its own reason for involvement in this network, she highlights the shared principles and overlapping strategies actors used and how their interaction translated into a modern form of decentralized governance. This book addresses these issues by considering ethnic relations in Romania and Latvia. In so doing it brings to the fore important stories too long ignored by the West and academic research. Writing in a direct, readable fashion the author connects her subject to a larger review of changes in global governance.

These efforts demonize teen mothers but tell us nothing about their lives before they became pregnant. In this myth-shattering book, the authors tell the life stories of 108 brown, white, and black teen mothers, exposing the problems in their lives often overlooked in pregnancy prevention campaigns. Some stories are tragic and painful, marked by sexual abuse, partner violence, and school failure. Others depict "girl next door" characters whose unintended pregnancies lay bare insidious gender disparities. Offering a fresh perspective on the links between teen births and social inequalities, this book demonstrates how the intersecting hierarchies of gender, race, and class shape the biographies of young mothers.

Sie rückt Bonaparte in den Zusammenhang der Moderne. Für Gueniffey ist diese historische Gestalt beispielhaft für die Neuzeit: Er repräsentiert jenen Typus, der seiner Meinung nach selbst die widrigsten Umstände bezwingen kann, vorausgesetzt, er hat die entsprechende Begabung, Energie und Tatkraft. Diese Vorstellung des modernen Menschen ist, wie diese Biographie für Bonaparte belegt, mit den historischen Gegebenheiten nicht vereinbar: Sie deckt hinter den Intention von Bonaparte die Selbstlogik unabhängiger Prozesse wie die Initiierung solcher angeblich historischen Abläufe die Spuren subjektiven Handelns auf. Damit macht Patrice Gueniffey, verständlich, unterhaltsam, anhand neuer Forschungsergebnisse und überraschender Einblicke und Synthesen, nachvollziehbar, warum Bonaparte zu Napoléon wurde.
