The Sweeney broke the mould for British cop shows. Until it was broadcast, they’d been rather stolid, sometimes quaint, dramas like Dixon of Dock Green, Z-Cars and Softly, Softly about policemen – or even bobbies: not cops. They were about upholding the law: not breaking it: about smart blue uniforms, not kipper ties and long hair. They were about preventing or punishing violence – not about inflicting it with pleasure on villains. Then, in 1975, The Sweeney burst onto commercial television. Based on the notoriously corrupt activities of Scotland Yard’s Flying Squad, it followed two dishevelled, uncouth detectives, Regan and Carter, played by John Thaw and Dennis Waterman, who hurtled around unsalubrious parts of London in a battered Ford Granada roughing up anyone who failed to spill the beans quickly enough. Where Dixon of Dock Green would bid his viewers “Goodnight all1”, with a cheery salute, this pair snarled “Shut it!” at toe-rags who spoke out of turn and “Put ‘em away, love” at gangsters’ molls whose boudoirs they’d burst in on. Philip Glenister’s Gene Hunt in Life on Mars is both parody and homage. Now Pat Gilbert has written the book on this cult cop show, interviewing dozens of people who made it happen, from screenwriters to stuntmen. It’s an essential companion to one of the DVD box sets.

Shannan sprinkles the enjoyable, fast-paced novel with many esoteric facts, long hidden from view of the sleeping public, such as those revealed in “The Franklin Cover-Up” about our beloved George Bush being involved in an adolescent sex ring while holding the office of VICE president. Any freedom-loving American will appreciate the veiled references to modern heroes such as Richie Mack and courtroom tyrants like Jack Tanner, and will also enjoy the express bolstering of Tupper [Saussy]’s and Irwin [Schiff]’s reputations as the writer explains how freedom was lost as fiat money invaded our borders. He saw the look on his dad's face. He would never forget it. Dad had asked his wayward nineteen-year-old son, ''Where are you living now, Pat?" "Here!" he exclaimed. His siblings cheered. Mom smiled. Dad wondered what was next. Later that night, his dad started reminiscing about the last few years in Billings, Montana. Nine years ago, he was in a financial hole that seemed impossible to ever climb out of. He had skipped paying the last ten house payments. He hadn't gotten late payment statements or anything. He went into the bank and looked up an old friend who worked there. Someone had made a clerical error eleven months earlier and had recorded receiving ten payments instead of one. His banker friend said that he was going to make another clerical error and increase the term of his loan for another ten months. He told dad he would call him for the next few months to remind him to make his house payment. Dad prayed for a better paying job. Months later, Dad fell into his business where all of a sudden, he employed one hundred salesmen. Years later, he prayed for a bigger house, and someone mentioned that a neighbor wanted to move into a smaller house. Somehow, they traded houses, and moved within a month or two. Now they had a house with one more bedroom and one more bathroom. He had also prayed for one less child in the house. I was the one less child he had prayed for. He mentioned Matthew 18:10 about his personal guardian angel. "Why the hell would I want to know all that crap?" Pat wondered as he headed for the party. Years later, after the passing of both of his parents and most of his older relatives, he wonders, "What was my dad thinking, how could he have done that, why did he do that..." Pat decided that his children could read what he was thinking, how he did that, why he did that. He decided to write it down. After a few years of writing and losing many typed backups, he started sorting his collection of stories into two groups: Moments and My Guardian Angel. Publishing a book, combining these two groups of stories, is an attempt to save his writings. There is much more. This is just the first book.

Behind heart disease and cancer, medical error is now listed as one of the leading causes of death. Of the many medical errors that may lead to injury and death, diagnostic failure is regarded as the most significant. Generally, the majority of diagnostic failures are attributed to the clinicians directly involved with the patient, and to a lesser extent, the system in which they work. In turn, the majority of errors made by clinicians are due to decision making failures manifested by various departures from rationality. Of all the medical environments in which patients are seen and diagnosed, the emergency department is the most challenging. It has been described as a "wicked" environment where illness and disease may range from minor ailments and complaints to severe, life-threatening disorders. The Cognitive Autopsy is a novel strategy towards understanding medical error and diagnostic failure in 42 clinical cases with which the author was directly involved or became aware of at the time. Essentially, it describes a cognitive approach towards root cause analysis of medical adverse events or near misses. Whereas root cause analysis typically focuses on the observable and measurable aspects of adverse events, the cognitive autopsy attempts to identify covert cognitive processes that may have contributed to outcomes. In this clinical setting, no cognitive process is directly observable but must be inferred from the behavior of the individual clinician. The book illustrates unequivocally that chief among these cognitive processes are cognitive biases and other flaws in decision making, rather than knowledge deficits.

This is The Planter. Yes, there are gazillions of other gray, terracotta planters, but the one you hold in your hand is the one this story is about. Several folks who read the manuscript said, I wish I could go to Brown Mountain Road and look at that planter, but, in some ways, reading the book and hearing the story are as close as you get. But it may be close enough. Maybe if you like this planter, you can feel yourself capable of far more good than you have done so far, far more that you could do in concert with others. Maybe not. Maybe all you will get from reading this book is more joy from walking in the woods. Either way, this book was written primarily because lots of people want you to feel better and more joyful and more peaceful. Start there and have a wonderful life. Take a deep breath.
