The aim of this manual is to provide practical information and strategies to assist supporters of people with developmental disabilities to understand and respond to abuse and neglect of those people. The first chapter introduces the issues associated with abuse and neglect of people with developmental disabilities, including basic information about abused people and offenders, and factors that make people vulnerable to abuse. Chapter 2 covers the physical, emotional, behavioural, and environmental signs and symptoms of abuse, some of the primary characteristics of offenders, and the short- and long-term effects of abuse. The third chapter gives guidance on prevention of abuse and creating supportive environments. The final chapter contains advice on what to do if abuse is suspected or reported, and how to provide follow-up support. Study questions are found at the end of each chapter.
