A prodigiously researched biography of Vannevar Bush, one of America’s most awe-inspiring polymaths and the secret force behind the biggest technological breakthroughs of the twentieth century. As the inventor and public entrepreneur who launched the Manhattan Project, helped to create the military-industrial complex, conceived a permanent system of government support for science and engineering, and anticipated both the personal computer and the Internet, Vannevar Bush is the twentieth century’s Ben Franklin. In this engaging look at one of America’s most awe-inspiring polymaths, writer G. Pascal Zachary brings to life an American original—a man of his time, ours, and beyond. Zachary details how Bush cofounded Raytheon and helped build one of the most powerful early computers in the world at MIT. During World War II, he served as Roosevelt’s adviser and chief contact on all matters of military technology, including the atomic bomb. He launched the Manhattan Project and oversaw a collection of 6,000 civilian scientists who designed scores of new weapons. After the war, his attention turned to the future. He wrote essays that anticipated the rise of the Internet and boldly equated national security with research strength, outlining a system of permanent federal funding for university research that endures to this day. However, Bush’s hopeful vision of science and technology was leavened by an understanding of the darker possibilities. While cheering after witnessing the Trinity atomic test, he warned against the perils of a nuclear arms race. He led a secret appeal to convince President Truman not to test the Hydrogen Bomb and campaigned against the Red Scare. Elegantly and expertly relayed by Zachary, Vannevar’s story is a grand tour of the digital leviathan we know as the modern American life.

The third volume of the collected works of ‘the true heir to Simenon’, the late French noir writer Pascal Garnier. 'Deliciously dark … painfully funny' New York Times Enter the world of Pascal Garnier, where life's misfits take centre stage, there is drama in the everyday and the unexpected is always just around the corner. Volume 3 includes The Eskimo Solution, in which a struggling writer's life becomes disconcertingly entangled with the crime novel he’s writing; Low Heights, in which vultures circle as a cantankerous retiree falls for his nurse and finds himself confronted with a man claiming to be his long-lost son; and Too Close to the Edge, the tale of a quiet retirement in the foothills of the Alps turned upside down. Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Engineering - Industrial Engineering and Management, grade: 1,0, Kiel University of Applied Sciences, language: English, abstract: Crowdinvesting as a relatively new funding form for early-stage startups in Germany bears fundamental opportunities for all participants. In this respect, startup entrepreneurs are facing the challenge to convince potential investors of their business idea to finally induce investments. Since crowdinvesting communication is limited to digital channels the knowledge about what information is relevant for making investment decisions is of crucial significance. Moreover, the “crowd” can be considered as a completely new investor class with specific characteristics and information requirements compared to traditional capital providers. The purpose of this research study is to evaluate the importance of business models as a potential unit of analysis in the crowdinvesting decision-making process. In this respect, the significance of selected signalling criteria that may serve as quality indicators for investors will be investigated. In order to gain a broader understanding about the preferences in crowdinvesting a comprehensive empirical study of the German crowdinvesting market is conducted. Entrepreneurs, crowdinvestors as well as respective platforms and thus the entire concept of crowdinvesting will benefit from a knowledge gain. The theoretical framework describes the characteristics of early-stage startups as well as the relevance of business models in the entrepreneurial context. In this light, different frameworks for the concept of business modelling will be presented and dismantled into relevant building blocks. Additionally, the concept of crowdinvesting is discussed in consideration of some special implications that can be explained via information economics and behavioural sciences such as information asymmetries and the occurrence of decision heuristics based on signalling criteria. The research indicates that the business model concept is a suitable unit of analysis as it allows a differentiated view and enables new opportunities for the evaluation of crowdinvesting campaigns. In this context, it has been statistically proven that product-focused business models are funded more successfully than others. Generally, the results imply that startups should engage in offensive signalling to improve success of the crowdinvesting campaigns. However, there are also some indications in this context that the crowd makes decisions based on simplified evaluation processes and therefore applies binary decision heuristics.
A crime writer uses the modest advance on his latest novel to rent a house on the Normandy coast. There should be little to distract him from his work besides walks on the windswept beach, but as he begins to tell the tale of forty-something Louis – who, after dispatching his own mother, goes on to relieve others of their burdensome elderly relations – events in his own life begin to overlap with the work of his imagination.

Why is Japan, a country that looked economically invincible a decade ago, stagnating, while long-moribund Ireland booms? What are the qualities that will ensure the continued dominance of U.S. culture, society, and business? In The Diversity Advantage, G. Pascal Zachary provides a provocative roadmap to the new civilization arising out of sweeping shifts in the world economy. He reveals – through vivid examples of individuals and institutions – that the key new determinants for any nation's economic, political, and cultural success are, surprisingly, a diverse population and a “mongrel” sense of self. Roaming the globe, Zachary shows how the rise of new forms of identity and migration are helping to determine exactly who will win and lose in the next century. Zachary's thesis isn't just about countries but about individuals, too. In his tour of a new global civilization, we meet a fascinating gallery of successful characters who possess an intriguing mix of “roots” and “wings.” Strong enough to know who they are, they are nevertheless ceaselessly becoming someone else – and in the process bestowing the gifts of creativity and social harmony on the cities and states that they call home.
