A traditional argument in favor of flexible exchange rates is that they insulate output better from real shocks, because the exchange rate can adjust and stabilize demand for domestic goods through expenditure switching. This argument is weakened in models with high foreign currency debt and low exchange rate pass-through to import prices. The present study evaluates the empirical relevance of these two factors. We analyze the transmission of real external shocks to the domestic economy under fixed and flexible exchange rate regimes for a broad sample of countries in a Panel VAR and let the responses vary with foreign currency indebtedness and import structure. We find that flexible exchange rates do not insulate output better from external shocks if the country imports mainly low pass-through goods and can even amplify the output response if foreign indebtedness is high.
Emotions are as old as humankind. But what do we know about them and what importance do we assign to them? Emotional Lexicons is the first cultural history of terms of emotion found in German, French, and English language encyclopaedias since the late seventeenth century. Insofar as these reference works formulated normative concepts, they documented shifts in the way the educated middle classes were taught to conceptualise emotion by a literary medium targeted specifically to them. As well as providing a record of changing language use (and the surrounding debates), many encyclopaedia articles went further than simply providing basic knowledge; they also presented a moral vision to their readers and guidelines for behaviour. Implicitly or explicitly, they participated in fundamental discussions on human nature: Are emotions in the mind or in the body? Can we "read" another person's feelings in their face? Do animals have feelings? Are men less emotional than women? Are there differences between the emotions of children and adults? Can emotions be "civilised"? Can they make us sick? Do groups feel together? Do our emotions connect us with others or create distance? The answers to these questions are historically contingent, showing that emotional knowledge was and still is closely linked to the social, cultural, and political structures of modern societies. Emotional Lexicons analyses European discourses in science, as well as in broader society, about affects, passions, sentiments, and emotions. It does not presume to refine our understanding of what emotions actually are, but rather to present the spectrum of knowledge about emotion embodied in concepts whose meanings shift through time, in order to enrich our own concept of emotion and to lend nuances to the interdisciplinary conversation about them.

The main application of Transition Metal Sulphides (TMS) as solid catalysts is for production of clean fuels in petroleum refineries. The various feedstocks to be processed all contain more or less sulphur, included in highly stable heteroaromatic molecules. In order to meet the stringent specifications imposed worldwide nowadays on transportation fuels to reduce their environmental impact, catalytic hydroprocessing remains essential. La sémiologie oculaire des maladies systémiques et les moyens d’explorations ophtalmologiques sont souvent mal connus des internistes ou des spécialistes d’organes. Inversement, les maladies systémiques sont l’objet de nombreuses interrogations de la part des ophtalmologistes. De ce constat est né Œil et Maladies systémiques qui présente, en 50 chapitres : • les principaux syndromes ophtalmologiques et les moyens d’explorations, destinés principalement aux non-ophtalmologistes • l’expression ophtalmologique des maladies systémiques (connectivites et vascularites, certaines maladies infectieuses et autres affections multiviscérales) ainsi que les aspects diagnostiques, pronostiques et thérapeutiques. Le professeur Pascal Sève, interniste, et le professeur Laurent Kodjikian, ophtalmologiste, tous deux rattachés à hôpital de la Croix-Rousse à Lyon, ont coordonné l’ouvrage dont les rédacteurs sont issus des diverses spécialités concernées : ophtalmologistes et internistes bien sûr, mais également spécialistes d’organes tels que dermatologues, néphrologues, neurologues, etc., tous référents reconnus dans leur domaine d’expertise. Ce livre apporte des réponses utiles et précises aux praticiens confrontés aux atteintes ophtalmologiques des maladies systémiques. Il intéressera donc les ophtalmologistes, internistes, rhumatologues, neurologues, pneumologues et autres spécialistes d’organes.
