This protocol narrative outlines the rationale, sampling design, and methods for monitoring landbirds in the Klamath Inventory and Monitoring Network (KLMN or the Network) of the National Park Service (NPS). It has been prepared in accordance with NPS guidance and standards (Oakley et al. 2003, Mohren 2007, and Sarr et al. 2007). The KLMN includes Crater Lake National Park (CRLA), Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO), Lava Beds National Monument (LABE), Oregon Caves National Monument (ORCA), Redwood National and State Parks (RNSP), and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS), hereafter known collectively as the parks. The parks, located in southern Oregon and northern California, extend across a broad range of topography, elevation, and corresponding climate and vegetation. This region is recognized for its rich biodiversity, which is represented by a diverse bird fauna (Trail et al. 1997, DellaSala et al. 1999).
Building on past recommendations and studies calling for park management of natural resources to be more scientifically based, the National Park Service (NPS) implemented the Natural Resources Inventory and Monitoring (I&M) Program. This program meets the demand for scientific information to guide resource management decisions (Leopold et al. 1963 and Robbins et al. 1963), as laid out in past NPS initiatives including the Natural Resource Challenge (NPS 1999) and NPS-75 (NPS 1992). In order for park staff to access natural resource information to make sound management decisions, the information needs to be structured, accessible, in standardized digital formats, and comprehensive. This allows park staff and researchers to efficiently review what has already been accomplished, build upon past studies, and adapt future management needs, without reinventing the wheel. The Klamath Network (KLMN) supported a data mining team to glean past natural resource-associated information from each park, to consolidate it for park management needs, and to help support I&M vital signs efforts.
The purpose of the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory & Monitoring (I&M) Program is to provide scientifically credible information on the current status and long-term trends of the composition, structure, and function of park ecosystems, and to determine how well current management practices are sustaining those ecosystems. This book introduces recent advances in the deterministic design of photonic structures, which overcome the current limitation in conventional disordered materials. It develops new concepts for disordered photonics inspired by notions in quantum mechanics, solid-state physics, mathematics and network theory, such as isospectrality, supersymmetry, graph network, small-world, de Broglie-Bohm theory, and parity-time symmetry. The multidisciplinary approach based on the core concepts of isospectrality (Chapter 2) and metadisorder (Chapter 3) offers a new perspective on the design methodology in photonics and in general disordered structures toward top-down designs of future photonic applications: perfect bandgap with strong modal localization, switching of random waves for binary and fuzzy logics, photonic analogy of graph networks, interdimensional signal transport, robust wave functions in disordered structures, and a novel method of energy storage and phase trapping based on Bohmian photonics.
