Critical Education in International Perspective presents new perspectives on critical education from Latin America, Southern Europe and Africa. The analysis builds upon the assumption that Iran does not act in a vacuum: the US, as well as the EU actions, will inevitably help define the future trajectory of the country. A trajectory which is set domestically also by the generational transition Tehran is going through. The inter-factional struggle affecting Iran since the early years of the Revolution is now revived by what is actually at stake: the very future of the Islamic Republic.
The Mediterranean, both a sea and a theatre, has served throughout history as a fundamental crossroads for the political-religious dynamics and international tensions that characterize the various worlds, east and west, south and north, that meet in this basin. Starting from these premises, the present work examines - within a chronological span that goes from the conclusion of the Second World War to the end of Pius XII’s pontificate - the contribution offered by the Holy See and by Catholics from different national contexts in deciphering the role of the Mediterranean Sea within the wider global context. As such, it constitutes a reflection on this geographical space with its peculiar cultural, economic, political, and religious realities by highlighting the role played by the Mediterranean in the elaboration of visions and projects of civilization. This work is the fruit of a wider research programme called Occidentes - Horizons and projects of civilization in the Church of Pius XII. It brings together the work of seven historians from different European Universities.
In his latest book Dr. Pieraccini makes a major contribution not only to the annals of the Franciscan Order but also to the history of Cyprus, a Greek-speaking island off the coast of Turkey that had long provided port facilities for trade with the East and that was an important staging post on the sea route for pilgrims to the Holy Land. After the waning of the Crusades at the end of the 13th century it became “the most important Christian outpost in the Mediterranean”. Even so, Catholics – whether Latins or Maronites – never made up more than 1% of the overall population of the island. In essence this is a tale of survival against the odds over the centuries, thanks to the stubborn resilience of the Franciscan friars and the Catholic faithful, especially the Maronites, in the face of great human and natural adversity. Among the perennial challenges the Order faced were those of a shortage of water, barren soil, “bad air” – malaria – a poor climate, and the hostility of the majority population of Greeks and Muslims.

An armored unit that has always aroused curiosity and interest, the Armored Group of the “Leoncello” was one of the few armored units of the Italian Social Republic, the only one of the Tanker specialty. Until a few years ago, the information relating to this department was very scarce and could only be deduced from some very short excerpts from an autobiographical volume by Gian Carlo Zuccaro, commander of the “Leoncello”, and from the brief historical summary presented by Giorgio Pisanò in his famous work of 1960s “The last ones in Grigioverde”, a synthesis that was plagued, however, by many historical errors. With the publication of the book by Sergio Corbatti and Marco Nava “Come il Diamante!” many aspects of the short operational life of this tank department have been clarified. The discovery and analysis of a series of previously unknown documents allowed the author to further investigate the subject. This volume therefore presents the story of the “Leoncello”, from the conception, fruit of his vigorous commander Captain Zuccaro, from his birth at the Carristi Depot in Verona, to his epilogue in the days of the partisan insurrection.

This book explores the potential beneficial health effects of donkey milk, and provides valid scientific evidence for a better appraisal of this product. Milk is the most complete natural food available and is a basic ingredient of the human diet for both children and adults. Milk produced by all mammals contains basically the same nutrients, but considering the differences in nutritional requirements, milk’s chemical composition differs in each mammalian species. The use of donkey milk in human nutrition has been known from the Roman age. Recent clinical trials have tested it as a possible replacement for dairy cows milk in infants affected by cow milk protein allergy. The results have clearly demonstrated that donkey milk’s chemical and nutritional properties are very similar to those determined in human milk. The essence of art is to conceal art. A dancer or musician does not only need to perform with ability. There should also be a lack of visible effort that gives an impression of naturalness. To disguise technique and feign ease is to heighten beauty. To express this notion, Italian has a word with no exact equivalent in other languages, sprezzatura: a kind of unaffectedness or nonchalance. In this book, the first to consider sprezzatura in its own right, philosopher of art Paolo D’Angelo reconstructs the history of concealing art, from ancient rhetoric to our own times. The word sprezzatura was coined in 1528 by Baldassarre Castiglione in The Book of the Courtier to mean a kind of grace with a special essence: the ability to conceal art. But the idea reaches back to Aristotle and Cicero and forward to avant-garde works such as Duchamp’s ready-mades, all of which share the suspicion of the overt display of skill. The precept that art must be hidden turns up in a number of fields, from cosmetics to interior design, politics to poetry, the English garden to shabby chic. A detailed account of how aces of the calibre of Brumowski, Kiss and Linke-Crawford did their best in their Albatros fighters, which often sported colourful and fanciful insignias. Austro-Hungarian industry produced a series of poor fighter types such as the Phönix D I and Hansa-Brandenburg D I during the early stages of the war, and it was not until licence-built examples of the battle-proven Albatros and D II and D III began to reach Fliegerkompagnien, or Fliks, in May 1917 that the fortunes of pilots began to look up. Unlike the German-built Albatrosen, the Oeffag aircraft were far more robust than German D IIs and D IIIs. They also displayed superior speed, climb, manoeuvrability and infinitely safer flight characteristics. The careful cross-checking of Allied sources with Austrian and German records form the basis for a detailed reconstruction of the dogfights fought by the leading aces.
