This volume covers most areas in the physics of the solar system, with special emphasis on gravitational dynamics; its gist is the rational, in particular mathematical, understanding of the main processes at work. Special stress is given to the variety of objects in the planetary system and their long-term evolution. The unique character of this book is its breadth and depth, which aims at bringing the reader to the threshold of original research; however, special chapters and introductory sections are included for the benefit of the beginner. The volume is generally suitable for post-graduate students and researchers in physics, especially in the field related to the solar system. A large amount of figures and diagrams is included, often compiled with real data.
Salim is the only son of a family of Moroccan immigrants living on the French island of Corsica. His desire to stand up and rebel against the poverty and ignorance of his peers leads him to strive for excellence in every aspect of his life. He lives in Casta, a small village in the north of the island where everybody’s life is constantly under scrutiny. His problems with the locals start during his school days when he has to defend himself against bullying and false accusations. It is also the time when he finds love for his best fan: Maria, the beautiful daughter of a supporter of the Corsican independence movement. When Bernard, Salim’s friend, mentor and employer, dies in a road incident - too easily dismissed as an accident by the racist Head of the local police - his life changes drastically. He doesn’t believe in the accidental death of his friend and starts his own personal investigation. When the feelings Bernard had for Salim are reflected in his will, he has to face not only prejudice, racism and envy but, most of all, a parallel world of crime, drugs and violence present on the island. His new status also makes him question the strength of his love for Maria, and to reconsider his feelings for Sylvie, Bernard’s lover. This is a story about intrigue, crime and passion set against the stunning background of the Island of Corsica.
Eminent Italian historian Giovanni Levi once notably remarked that “no one is a Marxist anymore,” pointing to a paradox in Italian cultural history. While what is called "Marxism" was supposedly hegemonic over Italian culture, and especially history writing, for decades in the postwar period, it then seems to have suddenly disappeared. This study questions such a vision of a monolithic and hegemonic Marxism. It starts from the most effective anecdote to all ideologising narratives—that is, research into the texts themselves. It sees the Marxist historiography of the post-1945 period as a "history in the making," in which references to Marxian theory were a fundamental factor driving historiographical innovation. This allows the book to bring to light a highly original experience in the development of historiography, based on the long Italian tradition of reflection on historical knowledge.
In 1994, a devout Catholic woman from Vermont began having religious visions and hearing the voice of the Virgin Mary. To spread word about her mystical experiences, she turned to the Internet. As Paolo Apolito records here, she is only one of many people who use the Web as a tool of religious devotion. Every day, thousands of Catholics - from I...
The incomplete European market for financial services, the obstacles to its integration and the potential benefits from more integration are subject of this book which is largely focussing on retail markets. The analysis can be regarded as a modernised follow-up to the financial market part of the famous 1988 Cecchini Report "The cost of non Europe". Even in the Euro age, retail financial markets in the EU are heavily fragmented and the consumers pay a large price for this fragmentation. This also weakens the growth perspective of EU and its international role. Explanations originate both from natural and policy-induced factors. Priorities for future policies are the dismantling of tax discriminations and further harmonisation in consumer protection and financial supervision.
The second edition of Applied Structural and Mechanical Vibrations: Theory and Methods continues the first edition's dual focus on the mathematical theory and the practical aspects of engineering vibrations measurement and analysis. This book emphasises the physical concepts, brings together theory and practice, and includes a number of worked-out
The structural optimization procedure presented in this book makes it possible to achieve seismic protection through integrated structural/control system design. In particular, it is explained how slender structural systems with a high seismic performance can be achieved through inclusion of viscous and viscoelastic dampers as an integral part of the system. Readers are provided with essential introductory information on passive structural control and passive energy dissipation systems. Dynamic analyses of both single and multiple degree of freedom systems are performed in order to verify the achievement of pre-assigned performance targets, and it is explained how the optimal integrated design methodology, also relevant to retrofitting of existing buildings, should be applied. The book illustrates how structural control research is opening up new possibilities in structural forms and configurations without compromising structural performance.
Numerous studies have established a clear connection between neuronal oxidative stress and several neurodegenerative diseases, with consequential damages to lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, etc. In addition, several modifications indicative of oxidative stress have been described in association with neurons, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in Alzheimer''s disease, including advanced glycation end products and free carbonyl oxidation. Oxidative damage and antioxidant responses are now well characterized, but sources of damaging free radicals are yet to be fully understood. Evidences of alteration in metal ions metabolism have been reported in various diseases like Alzheimer''s, Wilson, Menkes, Prion, Pick, Huntington disease, epilepsy and other pathological events. Thus, metal ions play a pivotal role in neurodegenerative phenomena. Chelation therapy is still in the early days of its development, but research in this area could lead to new products that could revolutionize treatment. Two international conferences on OC Metals and the Brain: From Neurochemistry to NeurodegenerationOCO (Padova, Italy, 2000 and Fez, Morocco, 2002) were recently held to discuss the role of metal ions in neurophysiopathology. A third will be held in 2005 in Johannesburg, South Africa. This book follows the same train of thought as those conferences, in order to highlight the unquestionable importance of metal ions in the research on the neurophysiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases. The excellent reputation of the scientists who have contributed to this project ensures the quality of the chapters presented here, and hopefully this will help spur new research initiatives in the field, which is still in its infancy. Contents: Metal-Catalyzed Redox Activity in Neurodegenerative Disease (M A Taddeo et al.); Aluminum and Central Nervous System Morphology in Hemodialysis (E Reusche); Transition Metals, Oxidation, Lipoproteins, and Amyloid-: Major Players in Alzheimer''s Disease (A Kontush); Molecular Basis of Copper Transport: Cellular and Physiological Functions of Menkes and Wilson Disease Proteins (ATP7A and ATP7B) (D R Kramer et al.); Copper-Zinc Superoxide Dismutase and Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (M B Yim et al.); Copper and Prion Disease (J Sasson & D Brown); Metallothioneins in Neurodegeneration (M Aschner et al.); Iron and Neurodegeneration (S L Grab & J R Connor); Iron, Neuromelanin, and -Synuclein in Neuropathogenesis of Parkinson''s Disease (K L Double et al.); Iron and Epilepsy (W-Y Ong et al.); Role of Iron Metabolism in Multiple Sclerosis (M J Kotze et al.); Neuroprotective Effects of Lithium (S Ermidiou-Pollet & S Pollet); and other articles. Readership: Academics, graduate students and researchers in neurology, psychiatry, neuroscience and environmental health.
This book argues that David Foster Wallace failed to provide a response to the existential predicament of our time. Wallace wanted to confront despair through art, but he remained trapped, and his entrapment originates in the "existentialist contradiction": the impossibility of affirming the meaningfulness of life and an ethics of compassion while believing in free will. To substantiate this thesis, the analysis reads Wallace in conversation with the existentialist philosophers and writers who influenced him: Søren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Martin Heidegger, Jean-Paul Sartre, Albert Camus, and Ludwig Wittgenstein. It compares his non-fiction with the sociologies of Christopher Lasch, Zygmunt Bauman, Ulrich Beck and Elisabeth Beck-Gernsheim, and Anthony Giddens. And it finds inspiration in Giacomo Leopardi, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Emanuele Severino to conclude that the philosophy which pervades Wallace’s works entails despair and represents the essence of our civilization’s interpretation of the world.
The book aims at providing an overview of the main economic issues related to tourism activities. While tourism is an important sector, contributing to more than 10% of the European Union’s GDP, research and teaching at the university level has only recently grown to a considerable level, and the field still lacks a firm research methodology. This book approaches tourism economics as an applied field of study in which tourism markets are represented as imperfect markets, with asymmetric and incomplete information among agents, bounded rationality, and with a strong presence of externalities and public goods. The economic issues studied in the book are approached both intuitively, largely using examples and case studies, and formally, with mathematical formalizations in text boxes.
This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the 20th International Conference on Inductive Logic Programming, ILP 2010, held in Florence, Italy in June 2010. The 11 revised full papers and 15 revised short papers presented together with abstracts of three invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected during two rounds of refereeing and revision. All current issues in inductive logic programming, i.e. in logic programming for machine learning are addressed, in particular statistical learning and other probabilistic approaches to machine learning are reflected.
This book presents a collection of coordinated scientific papers describing the work conducted and the results achieved within the LOGIDATA+ project, a research action funded by the Italian national research council CNR. Theaim of the LOGIDATA+ project is the definition of advanced database systems which significantly extend the functionalities of the current systems, with specific reference to the application areas for which relational systemsare not considered satisfactory. These new systems will allow the definitionof data with complex structures, the representation of semantic relationships between objects, and the use of powerful query and update languages. They will be based on a combination of techniques originatingfrom relational databases and logic programming, with contributions from object-oriented programming. The goal of the LOGIDATA+ project is the design, definition, and prototype implementation of a database management system with complex structures and a class hierarchy, to be accessed through a rule-based language. This book presents an integrated view of the project at the end of the first phase. The second phase will be mainly concerned with the implementation of prototypes.
By mapping the worldwide geographic distribution of the genes, the scientists are now able to chart migrations and, in exploring genetic distance, devise a clock by which to date evolutionary history: the longer two populations are separated, the greater their genetic difference should be.
