Paolo Ulivi and David Harland provide in Robotic Exploration of the Solar System a detailed history of unmanned missions of exploration of our Solar System. The subject is treated from an engineering and scientific standpoint. Technical descriptions of the spacecraft, of their mission designs and of instrumentations are provided. Scientific results are discussed in considerable depth, together with details of mission management. The project will deliver four volumes totaling over 2,000 pages that will provide comprehensive coverage of the topic with thousands of references to the professional literature that should make it the 'first port of call' for people seeking information on the topic. The books will cover missions from the 1950s until the present day, and some of the latest missions and their results will appear in a popular science book for the first time.
Orthoptera is one of the most important and interesting Orders of the Class Insecta. They include grasshoppers and crickets that have a fundamental role in many terrestrial ecosystems. In this complete and updated publication all the 382 taxa (species and subspecies) of Orthoptera nowadays known from Italy are treated; 162 of these are endemic! Unfortunately, as well as for other groups of organisms, also orthopterans have many species suffering from maximum degree of threat, according to the Red List of Threatened Species compiled by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Therefore, Grasshoppers & Crickets of Italy is very important also from a conservation point of view; it allows to recognize the endangered species for planning interventions to safeguard them. This new volume is an absolutely innovative tool in the field of nature handbooks. The authors have succeeded in realizing a text with a new and appealing graphic design, easy to consult, full of photos of morphological details useful to identify the species also by non-experts. Furthermore, very useful for the field work are the maps of the distribution areas, detailed at provincial level, for each species. This book will be useful not only for orthopterists, but also for young entomologists who will be able to measure their ability in identifying species, for agricultural technicians and for all nature and entomology lovers.
The first time that Nietzsche crossed the path of Dostoevsky was in the winter of 1886–87. While in Nice, Nietzsche discovered in a bookshop the volume L’esprit souterrain. Two years later, he defined Dostoevsky as the only psychologist from whom he had anything to learn. The second, metaphorical encounter between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky happened on the verge of nihilism. Nietzsche announced the death of God, whereas Dostoevsky warned against the danger of atheism. This book describes the double encounter between Nietzsche and Dostoevsky. Following the chronological thread offered by Nietzsche’s correspondence, the author provides a detailed analysis of Nietzsche’s engagement with Dostoevsky from the very beginning of his discovery to the last days before his mental breakdown. The second part of this book aims to dismiss the wide-spread and stereotypical reading according to which Dostoevsky foretold and criticized in his major novels some of Nietzsche’s most dangerous and nihilistic theories. In order to reject such reading, the author focuses on the following moral dilemma: If God does not exist, is everything permitted?
This book is the result of research carried out by Paolo Aite, who for over thirty years has introduced sandplay in adult analysis into Italy. This method is becoming more and more popular among Jungian analysts, both in Italy and abroad, in private as well as in public practice. But just what is sandplay in analysis? It is not another kind of therapy. It is preverbal communication through images that goes hand in hand with communication through words. By means of the physical experience of playing with sand and using objects, a symbolization of deep emotions is set into motion which speech, more closely linked to the defences, can only partly express. This is a perspective which brings out the close relationship between words and images and makes it possible to study the transforming moment when emotions take on a visual representation, changing the feeling tone of the analytical relationship. Contained in the spatiotemporal organization of the play scene is a precise interpretation through images of the intrapyshic and interpersonal experience shared by the patient and the therapist in the analytical relationship. The purpose of analysis is to succeed in expressing in words the whole transforming potential of the symbolic image which has inspired the play scene and the emotions shared in the analytical relationship. This research, which springs from the theoretical hypotheses of Carl Gustav Jung, addresses central issues of his thinking which have yet to be thoroughly explored, full as they are of potential development, both theoretical and clinical.
The book aims at providing an overview of the main economic issues related to tourism activities. While tourism is an important sector, contributing to more than 10% of the European Union’s GDP, research and teaching at the university level has only recently grown to a considerable level, and the field still lacks a firm research methodology. This book approaches tourism economics as an applied field of study in which tourism markets are represented as imperfect markets, with asymmetric and incomplete information among agents, bounded rationality, and with a strong presence of externalities and public goods. The economic issues studied in the book are approached both intuitively, largely using examples and case studies, and formally, with mathematical formalizations in text boxes.
Numerous studies have established a clear connection between neuronal oxidative stress and several neurodegenerative diseases, with consequential damages to lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, etc. In addition, several modifications indicative of oxidative stress have been described in association with neurons, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in Alzheimer''s disease, including advanced glycation end products and free carbonyl oxidation. Oxidative damage and antioxidant responses are now well characterized, but sources of damaging free radicals are yet to be fully understood. Evidences of alteration in metal ions metabolism have been reported in various diseases like Alzheimer''s, Wilson, Menkes, Prion, Pick, Huntington disease, epilepsy and other pathological events. Thus, metal ions play a pivotal role in neurodegenerative phenomena. Chelation therapy is still in the early days of its development, but research in this area could lead to new products that could revolutionize treatment. Two international conferences on OC Metals and the Brain: From Neurochemistry to NeurodegenerationOCO (Padova, Italy, 2000 and Fez, Morocco, 2002) were recently held to discuss the role of metal ions in neurophysiopathology. A third will be held in 2005 in Johannesburg, South Africa. This book follows the same train of thought as those conferences, in order to highlight the unquestionable importance of metal ions in the research on the neurophysiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases. The excellent reputation of the scientists who have contributed to this project ensures the quality of the chapters presented here, and hopefully this will help spur new research initiatives in the field, which is still in its infancy. Contents: Metal-Catalyzed Redox Activity in Neurodegenerative Disease (M A Taddeo et al.); Aluminum and Central Nervous System Morphology in Hemodialysis (E Reusche); Transition Metals, Oxidation, Lipoproteins, and Amyloid-: Major Players in Alzheimer''s Disease (A Kontush); Molecular Basis of Copper Transport: Cellular and Physiological Functions of Menkes and Wilson Disease Proteins (ATP7A and ATP7B) (D R Kramer et al.); Copper-Zinc Superoxide Dismutase and Familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (M B Yim et al.); Copper and Prion Disease (J Sasson & D Brown); Metallothioneins in Neurodegeneration (M Aschner et al.); Iron and Neurodegeneration (S L Grab & J R Connor); Iron, Neuromelanin, and -Synuclein in Neuropathogenesis of Parkinson''s Disease (K L Double et al.); Iron and Epilepsy (W-Y Ong et al.); Role of Iron Metabolism in Multiple Sclerosis (M J Kotze et al.); Neuroprotective Effects of Lithium (S Ermidiou-Pollet & S Pollet); and other articles. Readership: Academics, graduate students and researchers in neurology, psychiatry, neuroscience and environmental health.
The Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi (1462-1525) is mostly known for denying the human mind’s immateriality (and immortality) in accordance with his radical understanding of Aristotelianism. Pomponazzis Erkenntnistheorie attempts to reconstruct his theory of cognition. The author, Paolo Rubini, focuses on Pomponazzi’s scattered views about the mind’s ontological status and cognitive capacities, puts them into the context of Aristotelian-Scholastic psychology, and interprets them by reference to Pomponazzi’s ‘naturalistic’ approach to the human soul. Particular interest is devoted to the role of representations in cognitive acts, the functional link between intellect and imagination, and the process of abstraction. The study is based on Pomponazzi’s published writings about immortality as well as on unpublished records of his lectures about Aristotle’s De anima.

This new open access edition supported by the Fragility Fracture Network aims at giving the widest possible dissemination on fragility fracture (especially hip fracture) management and notably in countries where this expertise is sorely needed. It has been extensively revised and updated by the experts of this network to provide a unique and reliable content in one single volume. Throughout the book, attention is given to the difficult question of how to provide best practice in countries where the discipline of geriatric medicine is not well established and resources for secondary prevention are scarce. The revised and updated chapters on the epidemiology of hip fractures, osteoporosis, sarcopenia, surgery, anaesthesia, medical management of frailty, peri-operative complications, rehabilitation and nursing are supplemented by six new chapters. These include an overview of the multidisciplinary approach to fragility fractures and new contributions on pre-hospital care, treatment in the emergency room, falls prevention, nutrition and systems for audit. The reader will have an exhaustive overview and will gain essential, practical knowledge on how best to manage fractures in elderly patients and how to develop clinical systems that do so reliably.
This new, revised and updated edition takes into account the most recent advances in the understanding of human pathophysiology. The book presents the complex basic principles of vascular hemodynamics and its pathophysiologie in a direct and effective way, stressing the importance of the mechanical properties of large arteries in the origin of blood pressure. The readily understandable text, supported by helpful images, describes the elements that define blood pressure and explains such important concepts as pulse wave velocity, central blood pressure, reflected waves, and pulse pressure amplification. Entirely new chapters are included on the sympathetic nervous system and arterial stiffness and on the role played by arterial stiffness in influencing blood pressure variability. The book will enable the physician to answer some of the key questions encountered when addressing the problem of arterial hypertension in everyday clinical practice: How is blood pressure generated? How should blood pressure values be interpreted? Is systolic blood pressure of greater importance than diastolic blood pressure?

Neurocutaneous syndromes unify a group of rare neurological disorders in which the initial identification depends on simple visual diagnosis. They include a large group of neurological disorders (neurofibromatosis type I, tuberous sclerosis complex, Sturge-Weber Syndrome, Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, hypomelanosis of Ito, and others) which feature cutaneous and ocular lesions, brain malformations, central and peripheral brain tumours, mental retardation, seizures, and psychiatric problems. In the past few years our knowledge of neurocutaneous syndromes has increased dramatically. Detailed information about the clinical features, natural history, and management of these complex multisystem disorders, and new data on the genetics of these conditions, has provided insight into their classification, pathophysiology, molecular biology, and genotype–phenotype correlations.
