Italy, although it considers itself to be a middle-sized power on par with France, the United Kingdom, and Germany, has been incapable of playing an international role comparable to theirs, instead keeping a low-profile foreign policy. This has not been due to any material constraints—Italy’s profile has remained consistently low, through economic times both good and bad—but rather to the country’s strategic culture, a mixture of realpolitik and pacifist tendencies. This book sets out to analyze the influence of Italy’s strategic culture on its foreign policy. It conducts an exploratory case-study to show if hypotheses generated by the strategic culture approach can shed some light on the puzzling Italian behavior in the international arena (puzzling because Italy shows a less assertive foreign policy vis-à-vis other middle powers in the same rank). The first chapter considers the main interpretations of Italian foreign policy and their limitations. The second and third chapters review the literature on strategic culture, stressing its utility for the Italian case. The fourth chapter describes the country’s strategic culture through the Liberal, Fascist, and Republican periods, and the fifth chapter analyzes the influence of ideational factors on Italy’s behavior abroad. Conclusions sum up the various emerging evidences. Scholars of political science, international relations, strategic studies, and comparative politics will find this work to be of interest.

The town of Alba was the backdrop to the clashes between partisans and Axis troops between 1944 and 1945 and was even occupied by Resistance forces in October 1944, who, however, only maintained control for a few days, the famous '23 days of Alba', described by Beppe Fenoglio in his book of the same name. The town was again attacked by partisans on 15 April 1945, in a clash that lasted all day, but did not dislodge the republican garrison from the town, and it was not until 26 April that the partisans of the 2nd 'Langhe' Division and the 21st Matteotti 'Fratelli Ambrogio' Brigade finally entered the town, with the surrender of the forces of the Italian Social Republic. This publication examines the events that took place in the Langhe town between 1944 and 1945, with descriptions of the partisan and republican units that clashed in the Langhe.

Numerous studies have established a clear connection between neuronal oxidative stress and several neurodegenerative diseases, with consequential damages to lipids, proteins, nucleic acids, etc. In addition, several modifications indicative of oxidative stress have been described in association with neurons, neurofibrillary tangles and senile plaques in Alzheimer's disease, including advanced glycation end products and free carbonyl oxidation.Oxidative damage and antioxidant responses are now well characterized, but sources of damaging free radicals are yet to be fully understood. Evidences of alteration in metal ions metabolism have been reported in various diseases like Alzheimer's, Wilson, Menkes, Prion, Pick, Huntington disease, epilepsy and other pathological events. Thus, metal ions play a pivotal role in neurodegenerative phenomena.Chelation therapy is still in the early days of its development, but research in this area could lead to new products that could revolutionize treatment. Two international conferences on ?Metals and the Brain: From Neurochemistry to Neurodegeneration? (Padova, Italy, 2000 and Fez, Morocco, 2002) were recently held to discuss the role of metal ions in neurophysiopathology. A third will be held in 2005 in Johannesburg, South Africa.This book follows the same train of thought as those conferences, in order to highlight the unquestionable importance of metal ions in the research on the neurophysiopathology of neurodegenerative diseases. The excellent reputation of the scientists who have contributed to this project ensures the quality of the chapters presented here, and hopefully this will help spur new research initiatives in the field, which is still in its infancy.

In the interwar years, international lawyer James Brown Scott wrote a series of works on the history of his discipline. He made the case that the foundation of modern international law rested not, as most assumed, with the seventeenth-century Dutch thinker Hugo Grotius, but with sixteenth-century Spanish theologian Francisco de Vitoria. Far from being an antiquarian assertion, the Spanish origin narrative placed the inception of international law in the context of the discovery of America, rather than in the European wars of religion. The recognition of equal rights to the American natives by Vitoria was the pedigree on which Scott built a progressive international law, responsive to the rise of the United States as the leading global power and developments in international organization such as the creation of the League of Nations. This book describes the Spanish origin project in context, relying on Scott's biography, changes in the self-understanding of the international legal profession, as well as on larger social and political trends in US and global history. Keeping in mind Vitoria's persisting role as a key figure in the canon of international legal history, the book sheds light on the contingency of shared assumptions about the discipline and their unspoken implications. The legacy of the international law Scott developed for the American century is still with the profession today, in the shape of the normalization and de-politicization of rights language and of key concepts like equality and rule of law.

Nonlinear partial differential equations has become one of the main tools of mod ern mathematical analysis; in spite of seemingly contradictory terminology, the subject of nonlinear differential equations finds its origins in the theory of linear differential equations, and a large part of functional analysis derived its inspiration from the study of linear pdes. In recent years, several mathematicians have investigated nonlinear equations, particularly those of the second order, both linear and nonlinear and either in divergence or nondivergence form. Quasilinear and fully nonlinear differential equations are relevant classes of such equations and have been widely examined in the mathematical literature. In this work we present a new family of differential equations called "implicit partial differential equations", described in detail in the introduction (c.f. Chapter 1). It is a class of nonlinear equations that does not include the family of fully nonlinear elliptic pdes. We present a new functional analytic method based on the Baire category theorem for handling the existence of almost everywhere solutions of these implicit equations. The results have been obtained for the most part in recent years and have important applications to the calculus of variations, nonlin ear elasticity, problems of phase transitions and optimal design; some results have not been published elsewhere.

With the proclamation of the Armistice, the whole territory that included Friuli-Venezia Giulia, the Provinces of Ljubljana and Istria, considered of vital importance for the communication lines and for the supply of the German Army in Italy, was absorbed by the Reich, under the jurisdictional form of the so-called Zone of Operations of the Adriatic Coast (O.Z.A.K.). The government of the R.S.I. attempted to restore its authority in the O.Z.A.K. even in the military field, but German interference was always fierce. The reconstituted Legions of the M.V.S.N. were prevented to join the G.N.R. and the Germans imposed on these units the denomination of Territorial Defense Militia (Milizia Difesa Territoriale M.D.T.), formally part of the G.N.R., but autonomous in the reality. The M.D.T. was configured as a "Landschutz", that is a defense unit of the territory. In parallel, the Prefect Coceani and the Podestà Pagnini promoted the establishment of a self-defense unit, the Civic Guard, in Trieste, an example followed in other cities in the region.

The disastrous campaign on the Eastern Front conducted by the Royal Army saw very little participation by armoured units and they could only achieve results of little practical value. In all, there were four units, three of Cavalry and one of Bersaglieri (the III Armoured Squadron Group "San Giorgio", the XIII Self-propelled Squadron Group "Cavalleggeri di Alessandria" and the Autoblinde Platoon of the "Nizza Cavalry" Regiment) and one of Bersaglieri (LXVII Bersaglieri Motorised Battalion), all equipped with light vehicles that could in no way compete with the Soviet tanks, which, moreover, were greatly outnumbered and therefore inadequate in any case for the comparison, in the grandiose conflict that was taking place. After the Armistice, a group of former Arditi del X fought on Russian soil on board AS42 Metropolitan trucks, in support of the German 2nd Parachute Division, making themselves appreciated for their courage and determination, even in the difficult situation of the German troops on the eastern front.
