Tucked into the files of Iowa State University’s Cooperative Extension Service is a small, innocuous looking pamphlet with the title Lenders: Working through the Farmer-Lender Crisis. The Cooperative Extension Service intended this publication to improve bankers’ empathy and communication skills, especially when facing farmers showing “Suicide Warning Signs.” After all, they were working with individuals experiencing extreme economic distress, and each banker needed to learn to “be a good listener.” What was important, too, was what was left unsaid. Iowa State published this pamphlet in April of 1986. Just four months earlier, farmer Dale Burr of Lone Tree, Iowa, had killed his wife, and then walked into the Hills Bank and Trust company and shot a banker to death in the lobby before taking shots at neighbors, killing one of them, and then killing himself. The unwritten subtext of this little pamphlet was “beware.” If bankers failed to adapt to changing circumstances, the next desperate farmer might be shooting. This was Iowa in the 1980s. The state was at the epicenter of a nationwide agricultural collapse unmatched since the Great Depression. In When a Dream Dies, Pamela Riney-Kehrberg examines the lives of ordinary Iowa farmers during this period, as the Midwest experienced the worst of the crisis. While farms failed and banks foreclosed, rural and small-town Iowans watched and suffered, struggling to find effective ways to cope with the crisis. If families and communities were to endure, they would have to think about themselves, their farms, and their futures in new ways. For many Iowan families, this meant restructuring their lives or moving away from agriculture completely. This book helps to explain how this disaster changed children, families, communities, and the development of the nation’s heartland in the late twentieth century. Agricultural crises are not just events that affect farms. When a Dream Dies explores the Farm Crisis of the 1980s from the perspective of the two-thirds of the state’s agricultural population seriously affected by a farm debt crisis that rapidly spiraled out of their control. Riney-Kehrberg treats the Farm Crisis as a family event while examining the impact of the crisis on mental health and food insecurity and discussing the long-term implications of the crisis for the shape and function of agriculture.

Cognizant that they would be unable to influence policy by traditional electoral means, Arab Americans, through slow coalition building over the course of decades of activism, brought their central policy concerns and causes into the mainstream of activist consciousness. With the support of new archival and interview evidence, Pennock situates the civil rights struggle of Arab Americans within the story of other political and social change of the 1960s and 1970s. By doing so, she takes a crucial step forward in the study of American social movements of that era.

One man could and would control her even past adulthood. To this day she still does not know how she could love someone and be afraid of that person at the same.. Her Mother searched her whole live for love but found only men who wanted her parents money and someone to take care of them. Alcohol took her from her children and left them dependent on the one person she feared most. Leaving her Mother on Christmas Eve and being taken to the lover of her Mothers husband. That woman soon became the Mother she did not have to be. Teaching her all the things that her mother never had time to. Losing that woman thirty-five years almost to the day I she met her, would prove very hard to overcome. Finding out in her late forties of an uncle who was her birth fathers twin and an aunt she had never known about. Though she has never married she borne two children now in their early thirties. The oldest one broke her heart with the abuse of his daughter and the eventual adoption of her. The cycle of abuse and adoption had gone full circle. Her mother was adopted and now her granddaughter. She has drawn many simple pictures of every home she remembers starting at age four. She recalls every town or city that she lived in and some of the people who made a mark on my life. As you can expect, not everyone is pleased about this book being published. Some family members who were not present for many years feel that this story should remain untold. This was an undertaking that started while she was in grade eight, and she believes there was a reason she started it way back then.. This is something she did for her. She hopes that in her telling her story that she can help others. Anyone that has experienced abuse in the past should seek help in dealing with the feelings that remain. As well, anyone dealing with it now should ask for help no matter how young or old you are or how afraid you are. If they do not listen, yell louder. Stop the cycle of abuse!

This book compares consumer behavior in two nineteenth-century peripheral cities: Melbourne, Australia and Buenos Aires, Argentina. It provides an analysis of domestic archaeological assemblages from two inner-city working class neighborhood sites that were largely populated by recently arrived immigrants.The book also uses primary, historical documents to assess the place of these cities within global trade networks and explores the types of goods arriving into each city. By comparing the assemblages and archival data it is possible to explore the role of choice, ethnicity, and class on consumer behavior. This approach is significant as it provides an archaeological assessment of consumer behavior which crosses socio-political divides, comparing a site within a British colony to a site in a former Spanish colony in South America. As two geographically, politically and ethnically distinct cities it was expected that archaeological and archival data would reveal substantial variation. In reality, differences, although noted, were small. Broad similarities point to the far-reaching impact of colonialism and consumerism and widespread interconnectedness during the nineteenth century. This book demonstrates the wealth of information that can be gained from international comparisons that include sites outside the British Empire.
