Dangerous Desire is an important work that calls attention to how post-1960s literary representations of rape have shaped the ways in which both sexual and social freedoms are imagined in American culture. Exploring key post-sixties texts including Cleaver's Soul on Ice , Brownmiller's Against Our Will , French's The Women's Room , Naylor's The Women of Brewster Place , Walker's Meridian , and Dickey's Deliverance , Barnett finds that the widespread literary explorations of rape were almost always conjoined with one or more of the radical social movements of the sixties: civil rights, black nationalism, women's liberation and black feminism. Sexual violence emerges in these texts when the transformative possibilities articulated by sixties-era liberation movements trigger and intensify imbalances of power and cultural difference-for example, Eldridge Cleaver's claim that he lashed out against the white power structure by raping white women. This is a true story of a stuffed hampster named Belo. Belo was the first thing given to me by my father. I received Belo just before my husband Vic and I left for a cabin in Boulder Junction Wisconsin, May 2010. Along with our dogs Rhett, Noah, and Olive, we took Belo, the stuffed hampster and of course Charlie the teddy bear. I was so excited to have something from my father. I took Belo along as if it were my father going with us. Up until May 13, 2010 I had never spoken to my father. Perhaps my father thought I was still a little girl by giving me a stuffed hampster. I will be 50 in 2011. "BELO" is my father's funny nickname.
I was truly inspired to write this book. This book was written entirely in the Adoration Chapel at St. Bede's Catholic Church in Chicago. My life-changing moment occurred when I was holding Geoffrey's head as he was starting his journey home. As he was dying before my eyes, I was inconsolable. At that instant I thought of Jesus in Mary's arms after he died, and for the first time I felt how real Mary's pain was. I know it sounds crazy, but I believe I was given a special gift that day. I hope this book comforts and inspires you to live your life to the fullest and be thankful for every moment. I have lived through every chapter of this book; without these experiences, this book could not have been written.
This collection of essays presents a sampling of film and television texts, interrogating images of U.S. masculinity. Rather than using “postfeminist” as a definition of contemporary feminism, this collection uses the term to designate the period from the late 1980s on—as a point when feminist thought gradually became more mainstream. The movies and TV series examined here have achieved a level of sustained attention, from critical acclaim, to mass appeal, to cult status. Instead of beginning with a set hypothesis on the effect of the feminist movement on images of masculinity on film and television, these chapters represent a range of responses, that demonstrate how the conversations within these texts about American masculinity are often open-ended, allowing both male characters and male viewers a wider range of options. Defining the relationship between U.S. masculinity and American feminist movements of the twentieth century is a complex undertaking. The essays collected for this volume engage prominent film and television texts that directly interrogate images of U.S. masculinity that have appeared since second-wave feminism. The contributors have chosen textual examples whose protagonists actively struggle with the conflicting messages about masculinity. These protagonists are more often works-in-progress, acknowledging the limits of their negotiations and self-actualization. These chapters also cover a wide range of genres and decades: from action and fantasy to dramas and romantic comedy, from the late 1970s to today. Taken together, the chapters of Screening Images of American Masculinity in the AgeofPostfeminism interrogate “the possible” screened in popular movies and television series, confronting the multiple and competing visions of masculinity not after or beyond feminism but, rather, in its very wake.

The aim of this study was to characterize the antibiotic activity associated with a cell-free extract of marine bacterium Pseudoalteromonas sp. SW21. This bacterium produces a potent antibiotic compound that inhibited the growth of sixty-one strains of bacteria and delayed the growth of ten strains of bacteria and fungi. The compound was produced, in its most robust form, in 3-day-old bacterial lawns grown on agar, and was stable at both 4℗ʻC and -20℗ʻC. Physical and chemical analyses suggest that the compound is a 75 - 100-kDa protein. These characteristics, along with the significance of the environment that Pseudoalteromonas sp. SW21 was isolated from, indicate that the antibiotic activity exhibited by the SW21 cell-free extract may be due to a new class of antibiotic with a novel mechanism of action, making the compound ideal for further drug development.

Young people face invisible hurdles to accessing legal assistance, particularly where they have 650experienced family violence. The project, which was the subject of this research and evaluation report sought to identify those hurdles, to develop service delivery models that most effectively overcome them and, in so doing, increase the capacity of young people to engage in the legal system. Through early intervention and integrated service delivery, through innovate service models such as this one which reach out and see justice services collaborating and visible as part of other effective services with shared values, this research finds that young people will experience reduced occurrences of family violence and associated legal problems."--Executive summary.
