The United States is the only industrialized democracy that allows its citizens to go entirely without health care for lack of funds or to be bankrupted by medical bills. Author Pamela Behan was confronted by the effects of this policy failure during her previous career as a nurse, and with Solving the Health Care Problem, she examines how it can be corrected. Behan explores American health care policy failure by looking at how two other, similar nations—Canada and Australia—managed to adopt health care protections, and compares their stories with events in the United States. Behan's systematic comparison of all three nations shows that the factors responsible for these different results center on the responsiveness of each nation's political institutions to its voters. In particular, Australia's parliamentary system and labor party and Canada's constitutional flexibility and national-provincial dynamics proved central to each nation's adoption of national health insurance. In contrast, similar efforts in the United States became less frequent and less ambitious after they were repeatedly blocked without even coming to a vote. These dissimilarities reveal the institutional and class issues that must be addressed for the United States to successfully confront the health care problem.

In 2001 the northern Ontario town of Cobalt won a competition to be named the province’s “Most Historic Town.” This honour, though purely symbolic, came as Cobalters were also applying for and winning federal and provincial development grants to remake this once important silver mining centre as a destination for mining heritage tourism. This book, based on extended ethnographic and multi-method research in Cobalt, examines the multiple ways that development proposal writing is intertwined with neoliberal citizenship. Under current forms of neoliberal governance, proposal making and applying for grants have become normalized activities for individuals, non-profit organizations, schools, and municipalities. The authors argue that the residents of Cobalt have become entrenched in a “proposal economy,” a system that empowers them to imagine, engage, and propose but not to count on the state to provide certain services. The Proposal Economy makes an empirical and theoretical contribution to the literature on citizenship and neoliberal governance. In addition to the detailed and nuanced ethnography, it provides new perspectives on the ways that citizenship is produced and reproduced under conditions of neoliberalism.

The Temagami region of northern Ontario has been a magnet for recreational canoeists since the 1890s, when city dwellers began embarking on long, gruelling trips to reach its unfettered wilderness. The land is steeped in the history of its tribal inhabitants, the Teme-Augama Anishnabai (TAA), whose roots are 6,000 years deep. At the turn of the 20th century, the TAA still hunted on their traditional family territories, trading pelts at the Hudson's Bay Company post on Bear Island. The railway arrived in 1904, easing travel from all over North America. Steamships conveyed passengers to all five arms of the lake where rustic resorts and youth camps were popping up. Soon, the village of Temagami became a tourism hub. Logging and mining would later diversify the economy. The province of Ontario began leasing the lake's more than 1,200 islands in 1906. In 1931 cottagers united against logging near the mainland shoreline under the Timagami Association banner, now the Temagami Lakes Association. Temagami is the only Ontario lake where mainland shoreline development is banned Temagami Lakes Association: The Life and Times of a Cottage Community recounts Temagami's history to 2011, and examines the Association's often convoluted, occasionally controversial, relationships with the TAA, various levels of government, villagers and within its own ranks. The narrative is lightened by cottagers' tales of mice invasions, flesh-embedded fish hooks, encounters with big screen stars, cabin construction gone awry and the like. More than 150 photos enliven the text.

A practical, self-help guide for living well with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM2). In the last 40 years or so, we have seen an astounding rise in the prevalence of DM2 in most western and 'developing' countries. National data suggests a six-fold increase from around 1% of the population in 1980 to over 6% in 2020. There are thought to be nearly 4 million people with the disease in the UK, and close to half a billion affected worldwide. In parts of the USA and China, over 10% of the population have DM2. Traditionally thought of as a disease of mid-life and old age, both DM2 and the metabolic markers of future disease are now increasingly being seen in young people, children and even infants. What is happening? The burden of this disease is huge at all levels - for health care spend and for added risk of other medical problems. Its overall impact on health is at least as great as that of Type 1 Diabetes - it's certainly not the 'mild Diabetes' it was once called. In addition, other than its physical impacts - more than a third of people with DM2 are said to experience psychological problems related specifically to the condition. In spite of the tidal wave of disease and costs, the response from authorities has been somewhat underwhelming, with non-specific advice to lose weight (move more/eat less) being more or less the only public health guidance. We now however have a sense of being at something of a crossroads in understanding the science behind DM2 with a more focused approach emerging. Research and practice are challenging the traditional way in which we approach and manage DM2 - and offer too the potential for prevention - at scale. A central tenet of this book is that people can be educated, empowered and supported to control their metabolic health and to prevent, improve and manage DM2. The authors present a fresh and balanced individual take on the science around DM2 with an examination of the belief systems and behaviours that have fuelled its rise.

The walk Diabetes is on with HOPE is a timeline of finding out about the disease, learning what it takes to manage Diabetes, getting the necessary support and receiving encouragement to cope, while trying to find a cure. The animals portray what diabetics routinely have to do to manage the disease; not wanting to do finger sticks, counting carbs, and taking insulin. HOPE spells out what Diabetes needs. She convinces the animals to support Diabetes and to keep fighting for a cure. She wrote the book to promote Diabetes Awareness, especially on November 14th since it is World Diabetes Day. Diabetes, though, is a disease that must be taken seriously every day of the year. Her book is a children’s fiction story; however, diabetics and other people of all ages can learn from it.
