The heartwarming true story of a farmer’s unwavering faith in the face of a tragic prognosis—and how a community came together to help a neighbor in need. In the summer of 2015, Carl Bates and his wife Pam received the devastating news that he had metastatic cancer. The doctors have him just three months to live. As farmers in Galva, Illinois, they were dealing not only with the profound grief of Carl’s illness, but a serious practical concern: who would harvest the crops? Despite the crisis he faced, Carl never lost his faith in God. When word of his situation got out, a group of fellow farmers gathered organized to harvest Carl’s crops themselves. Someone observed that “a farmer can ask for no better crop than a bountiful harvest of friends.” The event was covered by the news and became a viral phenomenon. Now, in The Most Amazing Harvest, Pam Bates and Paula Patty tell the full story of the remarkable farmer who kept his faith, and the small town community whose selfless act of kindness was nothing short of a miracle.
In the past two decades, several U.S. states have explored ways to mainstream media literacy in school curriculum. However one of the best and most accessible places to learn this necessary skill has not been the traditional classroom but rather the library. In an increasing number of school, public, and academic libraries, shared media experiences such as film screening, learning to computer animate, and video editing promote community and a sense of civic engagement. The Library Screen Scene reveals five core practices used by librarians who work with film and media: viewing, creating, learning, collecting, and connecting. With examples from more than 170 libraries throughout the United States, the book shows how film and media literacy education programs, library services, and media collections teach patrons to critically analyze moving image media, uniting generations, cultures, and communities in the process.
In The Tree of Forgetfulness, writer Pam Durban, winner of the Lillian Smith Book Award, continues her exploration of southern history and memory. This mesmerizing and disquieting novel recovers the largely untold story of a brutal Jim Crow--era triple lynching in Aiken County, South Carolina. Through the interweaving of several characters' voices, Durban produces a complex narrative in which each section reveals a different facet of the event. The Tree of Forgetfulness resurrects a troubled past and explores the individual and collective loyalties that led a community to choose silence over justice.
Discusses the meaning of a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum for pupils with severe and complex learning difficulties and uses three case studies to illustrate this in practice. This working document has been produced by special school teachers from Manchester Education Committee.

In the 1950s, public relations practitioners tried to garner respectability for their fledgling profession, and one international figure helped in that endeavor. President Dwight D. Eisenhower embraced public relations as a necessary component of American democracy, advancing the profession at a key moment in its history. But he did more than believe in public relations—he practiced it. Eisenhower changed how America campaigns by leveraging television and Madison Avenue advertising. Once in the Oval Office, he maximized the potential of a new medium as the first U.S. president to seek training for television and to broadcast news conferences on television. Additionally, Eisenhower managed the news through his press office, molding the role of the modern presidential press secretary. The first president to adopt a policy of full disclosure on health issues, Eisenhower survived (politically as well as medically) three serious illnesses while in office. The Eisenhower Administration was the most forthcoming on the president’s health at the time, even though it did not always live up to its own policy. In short, Eisenhower deserves credit as this nation’s most innovative public relations president, because he revolutionized America’s political communication process, forever changing the president’s relationship with the Fourth Estate, Madison Avenue, public relations, and ultimately, the American people.
Feminist theory is no longer guiding the development of policy interventions in Australia because it is seen to be irrelevant to modern women. Many leading feminists are locked into a politics that is based on liberal or socialist principles and do not want, or know, how to move away from these, even when this type of politics is failing to change many women's circumstances. This book confronts feminism and challenges its relationship to philosophy, which the author argues impacts on the reception of poststructural theories, like deconstruction. It provides a narrative of why the potential for deconstruction has been denied, as well as where it has been taken on. It gives an account of deconstruction that tackles some of its more difficult aspects, namely its political applications. The book also outlines the history of Women's Studies as a discipline, that is, its institutionalization, and identifies its theoretical concerns as a social movement with a political agenda. The book maps deconstruction's impact on feminism in Australia and more specifically its introduction to Women's Studies programs.
From Mildred Pierce and Brief Encounter to Raging Bull and In the Mood for Love, this lively and accessible collection explores film culture's obsession with the past, offering searching and provocative analyses of a wide range of titles. Screening the Past engages with current debates about the role of cinema in mediating history through memory and nostalgia, suggesting that many films use strategies of memory to produce diverse forms of knowledge which challenge established ideas of history, and the traditional role of historians. Classic essays sit side by side with new research, contextualized by introductions which bring them up to date, and provide suggestions for further reading as the work of contemporary directors such as Martin Scorsese, Kathryn Bigelow, Todd Haynes and Wong Kar-wai is used to examine the different ways they deploy creative processes of memory. Pam Cook also investigates the recent history of film studies, reviewing the developments that have culminated in the exciting, if daunting, present moment. The result is a rich and stimulating volume that will appeal to anyone with an interest in cinema, memory and identity.

Women who skirt traditions, whether on the frontier of a young state or in a male-dominated profession, have relied on resilience, creativity, and grit to survive…and to flourish. These short biographies of twenty-eight female writers and journalists from Arizona span the one hundred years since Arizona became the forty-eighth state in the Union. They capture the emotions, the monumental and often overlooked events, and the pioneering spirit of women whose lives are now part of Arizona history. The remarkable women profiled in this anthology made the trek to Arizona from the big cities of Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C.; from the green hills of Wisconsin, and from backwater towns in Oklahoma and Pennsylvania; by covered wagon, automobile, and, later, airplane. They came with their parents or their husbands, or as single women, with and without children. They came seeking health in the sun-blessed dryness of the desert, a job, a better lifestyle. What these women had in common was their love of writing and journalism, and their ability to use the written word to earn a living, to argue a cause, and to promote the virtues, beauty, history, and people of the Southwest. The narratives in Skirting Traditions move forward from the beginning of statehood to the modern day, describing daring feats, patriotic actions, and amazing accomplishments. They are women you won't soon forget.

Located in the stark landscape of Eastern California's Owens Valley, Bishop is situated between two of the highest mountain ranges of the contiguous United States. Native Americans had been in the region since antiquity, and white settlers began to filter in after many battles with the Paiutes and Shoshones. Bishop was named after Sam Bishop, who drove cattle into the area and settled along Bishop Creek. Many more farmers and ranchers followed. To the south, Los Angeles was growing too, tapping the Owens River for a gravity-fed aqueduct for its residents; thus began the Los Angeles-Owens Valley Water Conflict.

Orchestrating Value: Population Health in the Digital Age focuses on the leadership thinking and mindset changes needed to transition from brick and mortar healthcare to digital health and connected care. The fourth industrial revolution, with convergent disruptions in biology, business models, computer science, and culture, has the potential to transform the healthcare system like never before. Digital health startups, Big Tech and progressive health systems will change the way health and healthcare are delivered to increasingly digitally savvy consumers. This book challenges readers to rethink the role of data and technology in creating and designing the future. Rather than hooking value-based care and population health management onto traditional healthcare business models, it focuses on the emergence of digital ecosystems. Using the analogy of an orchestra, the book introduces the importance of platforms in the formation of communities and markets with network effects to allow participants to collaborate, create, and innovate. With quotes from healthcare industry leaders and change agents, it helps the strategist understand the three stages of the transition from volume to value. As conductor of the orchestra, the CEO must navigate important leadership pivots to move beyond silo-based thinking. Finally, the Care Management Platform is described as a new operating model for population health in the digital age. As the next generation beyond foundational EHRs, capabilities such as interoperability, analytics, care management and patient/consumer engagement will fundamentally change the way healthcare enterprises operate and deliver value to customers.
What damage does psychology do to people's lives, and what can we do about it? How do we recognise and support resistance? Written by expert practitioners-researchers, this co-authored book explores how psychology legislates on normality and then uses its "expert" knowledge to turn social marginalisation into pathology. Chapters address a range of cultural and institutional arenas in which inequalities structured around categories of gender, "race", class and sexuality are reproduced by psychological practices: from self-help books to special hospitals, from school exclusions to Gender Identity Clinics, from mothering magazines to mental health services. But far from just documenting the damage, this book identifies the ways in which both professionals and users of services can act to counter psychology's abuses. As practical intervention as well as theoretical critique, Psychology, Discourse and Social Practice offers tangible examples of how change can be effected. This book will be of interest to advanced undergraduates and postgraduates in psychology, health, education and welfare disciplines. It is also relevant to social workers and education and health professionals, as well as professional psychologists.
