This book published in two volumes. Both volume divided in twenty three sections, all sections and chapters are most important. The Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine also offers a unique exposure to the problems in many parts of the world. Tuberculosis, the “number one” treatable condition has been extensively covered; and special topics such as multi-drug resistance, directly observed therapy, TB prevention, nonpharmacologic approaches and extapulmonary tuberculosis are particularly relevant. Many countries are facing a growing burden of noncommunicable respiratory diseases. They have become the second leading cause of death after injuries, and their impact on indirect costs such as loss of work and home productivity is enormous. These problems are addressed and measures of prevention such as smoking cessation are included. Other special challenges including topics such as indoor and outdoor air pollution, climate change, poisoning with pesticides, snakebite toxicity, pulmonary manifestations of tropical infections and industrial accidents such as the tragedy seen in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, with methyl isocyanate, have been well covered. However, as globalization flattens the playing field, and countries leap to industrialization, cultural beliefs, natural resources, climate and geography have slowed the pace of development in many parts of the world. Poverty leads to malnutrition, homelessness, lack of education, and poor access to health care. Overcrowded cities and rural underdevelopment are other challenges that impact health in the various parts of the world. Moreover, epidemics of HIV, drug abuse and smoking addiction take a greater toll on the population. Yes, the world is flat, but the terrain is filled with mountains and valleys and local problems demand local solutions. And these local problems need to be explored and presented with a scholarly perspective. The Textbook of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine has successfully incorporated these sociodemographic factors into the subject matter. The text is well-written and the chapters are carefully referenced with subjects found in all traditional pulmonary and critical care textbooks, e.g. airway diseases, interstitial lung disease, pleural disease, pulmonary neoplasia, pulmonary infection, sleep and critical care. There are several nontraditional sections as well that are practical and especially helpful to the practicing physician. These include a section on the symptom approach to lung disease, an overview of the pharmacologic agents used to treat lung disease, and a comprehensive review of methods in lung diagnosis from the simple history and physical examination to the latest complex tools of interventional pulmonology. The textbook is especially unique because of the abundance of illustrations, flow charts and tables. There are many radiographic and pathologic reproductions that are especially helpful.

In this volume we consider specific aspects of the chemical and biological envi ronment, and whereas the previous volumes were primarily concerned with the atmospheric interactions, our emphasis here shifts very much to the soil. This complex medium for plant growth was briefly reviewed in Chapter 17, Volume 12A. Since it is difficult to determine the precise physical and chemical interactions in the soil, it is even more difficult to determine the important biological interactions among organisms. Nevertheless there is growing aware ness of the significance of these interactions and their effects on physiological processes in the individual plant.

The term arecanut (Areca catechu L.) means the cluster of nuts. Emergence of the value added arecanut products have given a real boost to arecanut economy in India. Primary data on cost of cultivation of arecanut, perception regarding the constraints and awareness with special focus on emerging alternative arecanut products were collected from the sample farmers, consumers and traders of the sample area. The major source of data for the study was the sample farmers chosen from the selected taluks Viz., Thirthahalli, Kadur, Puttur, Vittla, Tumkur and Hollakere. The data pertain to the consumers and traders were collected from the selected districts namely Shimoga, Mangalore and Bangalore. In order to examine factors influencing the gross returns in arecanut, a regression analysis was carried out. Initially different types of functional forms were examined based on the co-efficient of determination (R2), adjusted R2 and Akaike Information Criterion. Finally the linear form chosen as a better fit based on the explanatory power, which is the co-efficient of determination (R2) and the significance of regression co-efficient. The dependent variable included in the model was gross returns in arecanut. Garret ranking were used to analyze the perception of farmers on production, market and policy based threats. Willingness to consume nutriceutical arecanut products logit analysis was conducted. The secondary data on alternative uses of arecanut were used to analyse the returns from alternative/potential uses of arecanut. Arecanut economy is currently facing crisis from several fronts. Legal Intervention to ban some of the value added products like ghutka is one of the threats which can curtail the demand considerably. Keeping these in background the present study has made an attempt to study the cost of cultivation, major threats, alternative uses of arecanut and awareness among consumers and traders.

This study aimed at designing economic crop planning consistent with natural and economic endowments, achieving resource use efficiency for Central Dry Zone (CDZ) of Karnataka. Field data were collected from 45 sample farmers each under Rainfed and Borewell irrigated conditions of CDZ of Karnataka. The extent of efficiency in resource use and allocation is reflected in the costs incurred and net returns realized by valuing inputs at market prices, economic prices and natural resource valuation. The cost of cultivation of crops indicated that, the net returns for borewell irrigated paddy were ₹ 34091/ha, ₹ 17278/ha, ₹ -26120/ha at market prices, economic prices and natural resource values, respectively. Thus, due to subsidies offered, the distortion of prices is to the tune of ₹ 16813/ha, while the distortion due to inclusion of GHGs (₹ 1899/ha) and inclusion of groundwater cost (₹ 41500/ha) is 43399/ha. The resource use efficiency of crops was estimated using Cobb- Douglas production function and results indicated that the ratio of MVP to MFC was differed from unity, in most of the crops, indicating scope for reallocation of expenditure among various resources from over used to under used resources. Economic Optimal Crop Plan for Sustainability in the region developed using linear programming technique indicated that, 40900 ha is to be allocated under borewell irrigated and 103673 ha for rainfed situation according to Economic pricing criteria. Total optimum area allocated would be 144574 ha which maximizes net returns at ₹ 73 crores for Tumakuru District in the CDZ of Karnataka.
