The first two volumes of this series addressed fea tures of the physical environment (Vol. 12A) and the special responses of land plants as they relate to water use and carbon dioxide assimilation (Vol. 12B). In this volume we consider specific aspects of the chemical and biological envi ronment, and whereas the previous volumes were primarily concerned with the atmospheric interactions, our emphasis here shifts very much to the soil. This complex medium for plant growth was briefly reviewed in Chapter 17, Volume 12A. Since it is difficult to determine the precise physical and chemical interactions in the soil, it is even more difficult to determine the important biological interactions among organisms. The book Floristic diversity of Barda Hills and its surroundings is first of its kind emphasizing the contribution of J.I. Thaker (1910) to the field of plant taxonomy and ethnobotany of Gujarat. His major contribution was on Vanaspati Sastra - Barda dungar ni-Jadibuti taeni Pariksha anae Upayog in Gujarati (1910). After his premiere work, no comprehensive study were undertaken to identify the multifarious changes that have come about in the area. In view of this, an attempt was made to understand the floristic diversity with different facets of taxonomic and ecological understanding in the Barda Hills and its surroundings. The basis of the whole study was based on the hypothesis that - the habitat destruction, over-exploitation of biotic resources, pollution and introduc-tion of exotic species as a result of human activities in the area over a period of ten decades, might have caused decline or shift in the species composition in the Barda Hills and its surroundings. Justification to the hypothesis includes various descriptive findings on biodiversity, historical understanding, floristic diversity, biogeography, species diversity (ecological prospective), genetic diversity and bioresources.

The term arecanut (Areca catechu L.) means the cluster of nuts. Emergence of the value added arecanut products have given a real boost to arecanut economy in India. Primary data on cost of cultivation of arecanut, perception regarding the constraints and awareness with special focus on emerging alternative arecanut products were collected from the sample farmers, consumers and traders of the sample area. The major source of data for the study was the sample farmers chosen from the selected taluks Viz., Thirthahalli, Kadur, Puttur, Vittla, Tumkur and Hollakere. The data pertain to the consumers and traders were collected from the selected districts namely Shimoga, Mangalore and Bangalore. In order to examine factors influencing the gross returns in arecanut, a regression analysis was carried out. Initially different types of functional forms were examined based on the co-efficient of determination (R2), adjusted R2 and Akaike Information Criterion. Finally the linear form chosen as a better fit based on the explanatory power, which is the co-efficient of determination (R2) and the significance of regression co-efficient. The dependent variable included in the model was gross returns in arecanut. Garret ranking were used to analyze the perception of farmers on production, market and policy based threats. Willingness to consume nutriceutical arecanut products logit analysis was conducted. The secondary data on alternative uses of arecanut were used to analyse the returns from alternative/potential uses of arecanut. Arecanut economy is currently facing crisis from several fronts. Legal Intervention to ban some of the value added products like ghutka is one of the threats which can curtail the demand considerably. Keeping these in background the present study has made an attempt to study the cost of cultivation, major threats, alternative uses of arecanut and awareness among consumers and traders.
This study aimed at designing economic crop planning consistent with natural and economic endowments, achieving resource use efficiency for Central Dry Zone (CDZ) of Karnataka. Field data were collected from 45 sample farmers each under Rainfed and Borewell irrigated conditions of CDZ of Karnataka. The extent of efficiency in resource use and allocation is reflected in the costs incurred and net returns realized by valuing inputs at market prices, economic prices and natural resource valuation. The cost of cultivation of crops indicated that, the net returns for borewell irrigated paddy were ₹ 34091/ha, ₹ 17278/ha, ₹ -26120/ha at market prices, economic prices and natural resource values, respectively. Thus, due to subsidies offered, the distortion of prices is to the tune of ₹ 16813/ha, while the distortion due to inclusion of GHGs (₹ 1899/ha) and inclusion of groundwater cost (₹ 41500/ha) is 43399/ha. The resource use efficiency of crops was estimated using Cobb- Douglas production function and results indicated that the ratio of MVP to MFC was differed from unity, in most of the crops, indicating scope for reallocation of expenditure among various resources from over used to under used resources. Economic Optimal Crop Plan for Sustainability in the region developed using linear programming technique indicated that, 40900 ha is to be allocated under borewell irrigated and 103673 ha for rainfed situation according to Economic pricing criteria. Total optimum area allocated would be 144574 ha which maximizes net returns at ₹ 73 crores for Tumakuru District in the CDZ of Karnataka.
