As human gene therapy becomes a clinical reality, a new era in medicine dawns. Novel and innovative developments in molecular genetics now provide opportunities to treat the genetic bases of diseases often untreatable before. Somatic Gene Therapy documents these historical clinical trials, reviews current advances in the field, evaluates the use of the many different cell types and organs amenable to gene transfer, and examines the prospects of various exciting strategies for gene therapy.
Something big is going down, real hush-hush. All I've got so far is a code name...Anteater mentioned it last month in Khe Sanh-thought it had something to do with nukes in the hands of the NVA, but wasn't sure-and now he's dead...I'll keep you posted. Only seven weeks have passed since author and journalist Roger Burnett, on assignment in Vietnam, stumbled upon a backstreet rumor about a mysterious organization known as Black Rose. The trail is long and complex, but the time span is brief for Burnett and an international team of associates to expose the growing conspiracy of those whose goal is to establish a permanent wartime economy in America-via provocation, via bold aggression, via any means possible-especially if it might force a war with China. About the Author: In the mid-Sixties, P. L. Nelson worked in an industry that was financed by the U.S. government to investigate and research means and systems of delivery for various chemical warfare agents. By 1967, he had managed an accidental glimpse or two of classified Intelligence projects, which served to tweak his imagination and set him on a course of fiction writing. The Incessant Voice of War grew out of Nelson's interest in history and politics, and in examining how people respond to severe challenges that test their integrity. Nelson currently lives in Colorado City, Colorado, where he is working on a book of poetry and essays based on his explorations of the American West. Climate change presents a profound challenge to food security and sustainable development in Africa. Its negative impacts are likely to be greatest in the African region, which is already food insecure. In the face of global climate change and its emerging challenges and unknowns, it is essential that decision makers base policies on the best available knowledge. In recent years, the knowledge of local and indigenous people, often referred to as indigenous knowledge (IK) has been increasingly recognised as an important source of climate knowledge and adaptation strategies.

In a clear and detailed manner, the author reviews the major types of transducers, presents a characterization of the state-of-the-art in sensing technology and offers a view on current sensor research. This book will be a vital resource for practicing engineers and students in the field. Comprehensive coverage of a wide variety of sensor concepts and basic measurement configurations encountered in the mechatronics domain Written by a recognized expert in the field who has extensive experience in industry and teaching Suitable for practicing engineers and those wanting to learn more about sensors in mechatronics
Draws on dozens of interviews with the forty-fourth president's African relatives to trace Obama's heritage back to the "cradleland" of the southern Sudan tribe, describing his ancestors' first encounters with Europeans and their role in the fight for Kenyan independence.
This book provides a holistic account of developments and patterns of mergers and acquisitions that have taken place in the Indian corporate sector, especially in the post-liberalisation era. It combines astute analyses with up-to-date data to present an all-inclusive picture of globalisation and its impact on business in contemporary India. This will serve as an important resource to researchers, scholars and students of economics, management, business administration, business studies, commerce and corporate law, as well as policy-makers, legal practitioners, industrial houses, and industrial bodies.
This book is the last of three volumes in which the recent knowledge of the extent and chronology of Quaternary glaciations has been compiled on a global scale. This information is seen as a fundamental requirement, not only for the glacial community, but for the wider user-community of general Quaternary workers. In particular the need for accurate ice-front positions is a basic requirement for the rapidly growing field of palaeoclimate modelling. In order to provide the information for the widest-possible range of users in the most accessible form, a series of digital maps was prepared. The glacial limits were mapped in ArcView, the Geographical Information System (GIS) used by the work group. Included with the publication is a CD with digital maps, showing glacial limits, end moraines, ice-dammed lakes, glacier-induced drainage diversions and the locations of key sections through which the glacial limits are defined and dated. Where controversial interpretations are possible, such as for High Asia, they are indicated. All information on Quaternary glaciations worldwide is presented for the first time in a uniform format, including the mountain glaciations of regions such as Costa Rica, Ethiopia or Taiwan. The digital maps in this volume cover Latin America, Asia, Africa, Australasia, Antarctica. Both overview maps and more detailed maps at a scale 1: 1,000,000 are provided. Also available: Part I: Europe, ISBN 0-444-51462-7 Part II: North America, ISBN 0-444-51592-5

It is well known and researched, that deprivation of oxygen to the brain can quickly result in irreversible damage and death. What is less well known, is that some vertebrate species are exceptionally tolerant of brain hypoxia. The Brain Without Oxygen: Causes of failure - Physiological and molecular mechanisms for survival, Third edition, discusses the mechanisms of brain hypoxia tolerance in these exceptional vertebrates, which include diving marine mammals, high altitude dwellers and the hibernating mammal. Special attention is given to the extraordinary adaptations that allow a few turtle and fish species to tolerate months of brain anoxia. This third, fully updated edition addresses the potential of these animal models as targets for human clinical intervention. Perhaps the most interesting of these, are those involved in the suppression of metabolic activities to new set points well below their normoxic minima or maintenance levels. This volume will be valuable reading for researchers in physiology, medicine and general biological sciences, and of great importance to pharmaceutical companies researching novel models for stroke and brain ischemia.
Concepts of Quantum Optics is a coherent and sequential coverage of some real insight into quantum physics. This book is divided into six chapters, and begins with an overview of the principles and concepts of radiation and quanta, with an emphasis on the significance of the Maxwell's electromagnetic theory of light. The next chapter describes first the properties of the radiation field in a bounded cavity, showing how each cavity field mode has the characteristics of a simple harmonic oscillator and how each can be quantized using known results for the quantum harmonic oscillator. This chapter also deals with the quantum fluctuations of the radiation field and the interpretation of a photon as an occupation of a normal mode of the system. These topics are followed by discussions of the radiation absorption and emission and the principles of coherent state and coherence functions. The final chapter considers the concept of semi-classical theory and its connection to quantum electrodynamics. This book is of value to undergraduate and postgraduate students who are starting research in laser physics or quantum optics.
For more than a decade, a small group of scientists and philosophers has met regularly to explore the intersection between science and the spirit--asking if physics, chemistry, and biology can explain the mystery of life. This work reproduces that dramatic, cross-cultural dialogue.
Composition modulation is a method of operating a catalytic reactor to improve catalyst activity or selectivity and has been under study for more than 25 years. In the last few years, several commercial applications have been realized and more will certainly appear. A large international research literature now exists. This book examines this literature and attempts to organize and analyze it with the intent of identifying the magnitude of improvements possible, why modulation is effective, and what questions remain unanswered. Topics include hydrogenation, oxidation, reduction, and polymerization reactions for NOX, SOX, NH3, and hydrocarbons.
In 1990, the National Science Foundation recommended that every college mathematics curriculum should include a second course in linear algebra. In answer to this recommendation, Matrix Theory: From Generalized Inverses to Jordan Form provides the material for a second semester of linear algebra that probes introductory linear algebra concepts whil
