Recognition of adaptive processes in biological systems as a discipline is still in its infancy. It is known that repeat exposure to low level stresses such as heat, cold, microgravity, hypoxia, exercise, etc. increases body-resistance to not only the particular stress but also to other conditions. Such a cross-protection can be utilized in a better patient care. This volume describes most current developments in the understanding of the molecular basis of adaptation as well as its application in biological systems including certain disease conditions in humans. Recent findings regarding the ability of diethyldithiocarbamate (ditiocarb, Imuthiol®) to delay the progression of HN infections and AIDS, the discovery of its potential as a rescue agent in cancer chemotherapy, and the identification of disulfiram (Antabuse®) regimens that allow alcoholics to achieve abstinence of many months' duration have made writing this book an exciting experience. At the same time the fact that the two drugs differ substantially in their pharmacological effects in spite of their easy interconvertibility has rendered the writing intellec tually challenging. Diethyldithiocarbamate, an agent seemingly less toxic than aspirin, rivals it in the multiplicity and diversity of its pharmacological proper ties. Notable among these are the manyfold potent immunostimulant effects, and though most of these involve effects on T -cells, the mechanism of diethyldithiocarbamate's action remains far from clear. The drug is also a potent chelator of heavy metals and this has led to a number of clinical applications. As might be expected, it inhibits several important enzymes. Influenza continues to be one of the major epidemic diseases of man and is, in fact, his only remaining pandemic disease (BEVERIDGE, 1969). This is largely because influenza virus undergoes extreme antigenic variation, the mechanism of which is still poorly understood. Two kinds of antigenic variation occur in influenza viruses, antigenic drift and major antigenic shifts; both involve chan ges in the hemagglutinin and neuraminidase antigens on the surface of the virus. Antigenic drift, which involves gradual changes in the surface antigens of influenza virus, is thought to result from the selection by an immune popula tion of mutant virus particles with altered antigenic determinants. These mutants therefore possess a growth advantage in the presence of antibody (FRAN CIS and MAASSAB, 1965; ARCHETTI and HORSFALL, 1950; HAMRE et aI., 1958). It has been shown that antigenic mutants isolated in vitro by selection with antibody have changes in amino acid sequence in the polypeptides of the hem agglutinin subunits (LAVER and WEBSTER, 1968) and it is likely that antigenic drift in the neuraminidase occurs by the same mechanism.

Historically, in India, we have instances of both unveiling and veiling that have been initiated by Indian Muslim women. The early 20th century saw many Muslim women joining the national movement, giving up veiling, feeling this was the only way for them to change their own, and the country's, future. Almost a hundred years later, the hijab continues to be a bone of contention in India, though in very different ways. On one hand, the rape threats that hijabi/non-hijabi women frequently encounter in the cyber world reflect the extreme desperation of the aggravated Hindutva millennials who are made to believe that unveiling Muslim women is their right while a large segment of Indian Muslim women are increasingly convinced that wearing the hijab is their constitutional prerogative. This collection of essays, primarily from India but also with a couple from Bangladesh and Iran, complicates the relationship between Muslim women and the hijab. Moving away from predictable interpretations that see the hijab merely as an instrument of Muslim women’s oppression, the essays here, from a variety of perspectives including historical, ethnographic, and political, demonstrate that not only have Muslim women covered/ or uncovered their heads for different reasons, but the head cloth itself has had different forms depending on the region or period of history. The essays track the reasons why clothing, especially women’s attire, is very often a site of contestation and provide ways to hear and understand the ways in which Muslim girls or women make their own sartorial choices. Water is one of the critical factors of animal production drawn from nature. Milk production in India witnessed sharp rise through operation flood programme and retaining veritable position as the world’s largest milk producing nation. Groundwater resources account for 64 per cent of irrigation. On the other hand, groundwater table is falling due to extensive use of irrigation water. Dairying is a water intensive activity and direct water use is only a negligible portion of total water use in dairying as virtual water use is very high. In this context, present study was carried out in Mysuru and Chamarajanagar Districts of Karnataka State with the objectives (i) To study cost of milk production and water use efficiency in milk production under different levels of groundwater exploitation (ii) To estimate the technical efficiency of milk production under different levels of groundwater exploitation (iii) To work out private and social cost of groundwater use in milk production. The study was undertaken during 2012-13 enveloping 8 villages and 240 households rearing dairy animals. Mysuru and Chamarajanagar Districts provided a good background for the undertaken study as the region represented different levels of ground water use & progressive dairy farming area. Appropriate analytical tools were employed for analysis.The study indicated variations in cost of milk production across the region and animal breeds. By and large, 60 to 70 per cent of the milk production cost was on account of feed cost and it was slightly higher in overexploited area. About 90 per cent of the total cost of milk production was shared by total variable cost. Milk production cost crossbreds was highest (₹19.38/liter) in overexploited areas and least (₹16.68/liter) in safe areas.Cost of local cow milk production was highest (₹29.51/liter) in critical and overexploited ₹ (27.58/liter) and comparatively less (₹24.04/liter) safe areas. Cost of milk production of buffalo was highest in overexploited (₹26.34/liter) and was relatively lower (22.19/liter) safe area.
The immobilized biocatalyst (IMB) is a key component of biotransformation systems that are used to transform substrates to desired products. The impro- ment of biocatalyst properties has a direct influence on the overall effectiveness of the process based on the biotransformation. The basic catalytic characte- stics of biocatalyst that are followed include kinetic properties, pH optima, stability, and inhibition. The investigation of catalytic properties of immobilized enzymes is still a time consuming procedure and is not always simple. In the 1980s, a major effort was made to standardize the rules by which IMB is char- terized. The Working Party of EFB on immobilized biocatalysts has formul- ed principles of individual methods, among them the requirement of kinetic characterization [1]. It was recommended to use a packed-bed reactor, equipped with temperature control and with infinite flow circulation. The system should be equipped with a post-column unit to measure the time-dependence of the product or substrate concentration [2, 3], the most commonly used analytical methods being spectrophotometry, chemiluminiscence, automatic titration, bioluminiscence, chromatography, polarimetry, and biosensors based on the oxygen electrode. There are two main drawbacks to the application of these methods: 1. The need to vary the analytical principles, depending on the chemical and physical-chemical properties of analytes; 2. In some cases, mainly in the study of hydrolytic enzymes, the natural s- strate must be replaced by an artificial one, that is chromolytic, chromogenic, chemiluminiscent, bioluminiscent, or fluorescent.
