The. Advanced Research Inst i tute (ARI) on Dynamic Processes in the Chemistry of the Upper OCean had its origins in discussions by the NATO Special Programme Panel on Marine Sciences during 1978 when a wide range of topics for future ARIs was being considered. What was then envisaged was a workshop on chemical aspects of the oceanic mixed layer, at which consider ation would be given to the inputs, cycling and removal of material, and the problems involved in the quantitative assessment of fluxes. It was realised that any attempt to model chemical processes would need the active collaboration of workers from other fields, especially physical oceano graphers concerned with air-sea interaction and turbulence, and biological oceano~raphers with expertise in primary productivity and the cycling of particulate and dissolved organic material. As plans for the ARI developed further a somewhat different emphasis emerged, focused on the question as to how chemists should set about observing an environment as variable and dynamic as the upper ocean and selecting the appropriate scales for the framework of measurements to study a particular process, especially in the light of current knowledge of physical processes of transport and mixing. It was plain that the capabil ity of physical oceanographic methods to resolve differences on small spatial and temporal scales is considerably ahead of the capabilities of biologists and chemists who rely upon discrete sampling and complex lab oratory manipulations in order to obtain most of their data.

This monograph has its origins in a two-day meeting with the same title held in London, England in the spring of 1987. The idea for the meeting came from members of the UK Mineral and Rock Physics Group. It was held under the auspices of, and made possible by the generous support of, the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland. Additional financial assistance was provided by ECC International pIc and the Cookson Group pIc. The aims of the London meeting were to survey the current state of knowledge about deformation processes in non-metallic materials and to bring together both experts and less experienced Earth scientists and ceramicists who normally had little contact but shared common interests in deformation mechanisms. This monograph has similar aims and, indeed, most of its authors were keynote speakers at the meeting. Consequently, most of the contributions contain a review element in addition to the presentation and discussion of new results. In adopting this format, the editors hope that the monograph will provide a valuable state-of-the-art sourcebook, both to active researchers and also to graduate students just starting in the relevant fields.
Immobilized pH gradients (IPG) represent the most advanced development of isoelectric focusing (IEF). Originally developed to overcome all the problems of IEF in soluble amphoteric buffers (CA) (such as pH gradient instability, complexation with CA chemicals, unreproducibility of pH gradients, protein precipitation at the pI), it turned out to be an entirely new technique, quite different in principle and operation from conventional IEF. The book is thus meant to bring the reader up to date with this fast developing field. The book is divided into six chapters containing information on: detailed treatment of all the chemistry of the Immobiline chemicals; theory of pH gradient generation (computer simulations, tables with all the possible pH recipes); all analytical aspects of IPGs, including staining techniques, blotting etc.; two-dimensional maps, with a detailed treatise of advantages and limitations; preparative aspects of IPGs, including comparison with other preparative electrophoretic techniques; some examples of applications, including genetic and forensic analysis, blood polymorphism etc.The book is extensive and up-to-date, while also extensively covering the theory. Clearly written, with easily accessible information, the volume is a worthy asset to the Lab. Techniques series.
