This volume is a collection of papers presented at the 14th International Conference on Nucleation and Atmospheric Aerosols, Helsinki, 26 - 30 August 1996. The first conference of this series took place in Dublin (1955); second, Basel and Locarno (1956); third, Cambridge (1958); fourth, Frankfurt am Main and Heidelberg (1961); fifth, Clermont-Ferrand and Tolouse (1963); sixth, Albany and University Park (1966); seventh, Prague and Vienna (1969); eighth, Leningrad (1973); ninth, Galway (1977); tenth, Hamburg (1981); eleventh Budapest (1984); twelfth, Vienna (1988); thirteenth, Salt Lake City (1992). The Atmospheric Aerosol conference has been held jointly with the Nucleation Symposium since 1988 in Vienna in order to stimulate contacts between researchers in these closely related fields. The broad nature of the meeting and the scientific program resulted in 32 countries submitting papers for presentation. Covering both experimental and theoretical studies these papers are divided amongst the chapters on Nucleation, Stratospheric Aerosols and Ice Nucleation, Tropospheric Aerosols and Aerosol-Cloud-Climate Interaction. In addition to these contributed papers invitations to present a plenary lecture on topics of particular current interest were accepted by P.J. Crutzen, J. Gras, J.L. Katz, A.A. Lushnikov, D. Oxtoby, J.E. Penner, Th. Peter, F. Raes, S.E. Schwartz, R. Strey and G. Vali. These plenary papers together with the contributed papers provide a well-balanced perspective of the current research over the entire field and highlight some important issues.
In A Potpourri of Poems, author Gary Ten Eyck, Pe, presents a compilation of the poetry he has written for nearly four decades. These verses run the gamut of emotion and subject matter, featuring commentary on society and nature, odes for the various people in his life, considerations of fictional beings he has created with his imagination, and even vignettes of various crusty crustaceans. Offered with a wry sense of humor, these poems represent the work of a lifetime, depicting one mans perspective on the universe. This collection of poetry explores a wide range of topics, including friends, family, animals, fictitious beings, and observations on life and the world as a whole.
This book is the outgrowth of a week-long conference on sandstone organized by the authors, first held at Banff, Alberta, in 1964 under the auspices of the Alberta Association of Petroleum Geologists and the University of Alberta, and again, in 1965, at Bloomington, Indiana, under the sponsorship of the Indiana Geological Survey and the Department of Geology, Indiana University. A 2- page syllabus was prepared for the second conference and published by the Indiana Geological Survey. Continuing interest in and demand for the syllabus prompted us to update and expand its contents. The result is this book. We hope this work will be useful as a text or supplementary text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in sedimentation, sedimentary petrology, or general petrology and perhaps will be helpful to the teachers of such courses. Though we have focussed on sandstones we have necessarily included much of interest to students of all sediments. We hope also that it will be a useful reference work for the professional geologist, especially those concerned with petroleum, ground-water, and economic geology either in industry or government. Because the subject is so closely tied to surface processes it may also be of interest to geo morphologists and engineers who deal with beaches and rivers where sand is in transit.
Research on the Stahler family and related names began in 1990 simultaneously with researching information on the Thomas (paternal) and Murphy (maternal) books, which took us from New England to Colorado. The Stahler book took place in the southwest counties of Pennsylvania. All but two surnames in this volume are from Germany and many names repeated in family stories. Because of this, a superscript was used in discussion to clarify generations (also used for footnotes). Stories are remembered. One is Jacob Christman was killed on his farm, and another Jacob Christmen was also killed on the same farm. Or that Gloria’s father was the first athlete playing high school football. They played at Pottsville and won 19–13. “The newspaper account pointed out Pottsville hit a pass receiver in the crowd and he scored two touchdowns through this deception.”
Azure of the Cimarron By: P E Morgan Azure of the Cimarron is set in a world that makes use of the full potential of discoveries made in the opening years of the 20th century. Lighter than air airships and steam powered conveyances are common place, while the Wright Brother’s first flight is remembered as nothing more than a historic curiosity. Against this backdrop, the story focuses on the adventures of Henrietta Whitfield, the future Duchess of Azure. She began her life as an American tomboy born to English parents living in New York. When her grandfather and uncles unexpectedly die, her father inherits a title. He became an Earl and his daughter, at twelve, became Lady Henrietta. The bright and inquisitive girl chaffed under restrictions placed on her by society. She remained determined to join the ranks of the great explores and even tried to join the Royal Navy. Her efforts to have a life of adventure were all in vain, until her fabulously wealthy American Uncle gives her the chance of a lifetime. Thanks to him, she gains an officers berth aboard his great new airship named the Lady Cimarron. Sadly, war in Europe erupts. In a desperate gamble to save Great Britain from invasion, the airship and Lady Henrietta are drawn into the service of the Crown. Danger, intrigue and romance will be her constant companions as her story unfolds.
This book focuses on the Eastern Crisis of 1839-41, closely examining the first instance of coordinated Western intervention in the Middle East during the modern era. Readers can explore topics such as how culture, domestic politics, and ideology shaped diplomacy in this landmark crisis, and the importance role played by religion - including, alongside mainstream Christianity, the Protestant Zionist movement. Highly informative and fully researched, this book suggests that the Eastern Crisis - and its associated diplomatic and military efforts - marked the first of many modern-era attempts to “improve” the region by moulding it in a Western image, providing scholars with a new perspective on this period of history.
“An exacting look at gentrification.... How to Kill a City elucidates the complex interplay between the forces we control and those that control us.”―New York Times Book Review The term gentrification has become a buzzword to describe the changes in urban neighborhoods across the country, but we don’t realize just how threatening it is. It means more than the arrival of trendy shops, much-maligned hipsters, and expensive lattes. The very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces hangs in the balance. P. E. Moskowitz’s How to Kill a City takes readers from the kitchen tables of hurting families who can no longer afford their homes to the corporate boardrooms and political backrooms where destructive housing policies are devised. Along the way, Moskowitz uncovers the massive, systemic forces behind gentrification in New Orleans, Detroit, San Francisco, and New York. In the new preface, Moskowitz stresses just how little has changed in those same cities and how the problems of gentrification are proliferating throughout America. The deceptively simple question of who can and cannot afford to pay the rent goes to the heart of America’s crises of race and inequality. A vigorous, hard-hitting exposé, How to Kill a City reveals who holds power in our cities and how we can get it back.
Volume XV "Urology in Childhood" was written in 1956/57 and was the first in the series of the Encyclopedia of Urology to appear. This present volume has been constructed as a supplement and the original intention was to deal only with those subjects in which there have been significant advances during the intervening sixteen years. As the work has proceeded, however, it has become evident that there is no aspect of paediatric urology which has not been developed, and no topic which has not been illuminated by many contributions to the literature. Indeed, there has been such a copious flow of publications devoted to children's urinary tract disease that a full review is no longer possible within the compass of a volume of this size: the decision as to what should be left out has therefore been a matter of the greatest difficulty. The choice has been inevit ably arbitrary and many omissions are regretted. The attempt has been made, however, to report the most notable developments of the subject, and perhaps the greatest change in the practice of paediatric urology has been the full integra tion with paediatric nephrology. The team approach to infant disease in particular has led to greatly improved results. I have been fortunate to have Dr. T. M.
In the past, interest in sedimentary structures has arisen mainly from the expectation that these features might be a guide to the environment of depo sition. But many sedimentary structures have also proved useful in determining stratigraphic order in nonfossiliferous, steeply inclined beds especially in Pre cambrian terranes. As the sequence problem has been reviewed at length by Shrock, it seemed to us, therefore, that the time is now ripe for a new look at sedimentary structures, not with respect to "top and bottom," but with reference to "fore and aft. " Much of the present-day interest in these structures stems from their usefulness in mapping of paleocurrents. A stage has been reached where there is need for a work which assembles, digests, and organizes our collective knowledge of the usefulness of directional properties of sediments and their application to basin analysis. This we have attempted to write. The desirability and need for such a book occurred to both of us independently. Upon discovering our mutual interest, we decided that a better book could be written by collaboration. Fortunately this collaboration became a reality because of support by the Guggenheim Foundation of one of us and the cooperation and support of The Johns Hopkins University of both of us. We acknowledge with thanks this indispensable aid.
In Cicero in Heaven: The Roman Rhetor and Luther’s Reformation, Carl Springer traces the historical outlines of Cicero’s rhetorical legacy, paying special attention to the momentous impact that he had on Luther, his colleagues at the University of Wittenberg, and later Lutherans. While the revival of interest in Cicero’s rhetoric is more often associated with the Renaissance than with the Reformation, it would be a mistake to overlook the important role that Luther and other reformers played in securing Cicero’s place in the curricula of schools in modern Europe (and America). Luther’s attitude towards Cicero was complex, and the final chapter of the book discusses negative reactions to Cicero in the Reformation and the centuries that followed.

- What is an earthquake gown? - Who wore eelskin masher trousers? - What did the word "dudes" mean in the 16th century? A Dictionary of English Costume by C. Willett Cunnington, Phillis Cunnington and Charles Beard was originally published in 1960. A monumental achievement and encyclopaedic in scope, it was a comprehensive catalogue of fashion terms from the mid-medieval period up to 1900. It was reissued and updated several times, for the last time in 1976. For decades it has served as a bible for costume historians. The Dictionary of Fashion History completely updates and supplements the Cunningtons' landmark work to bring it up to the present day. Featuring additional terms and revised definitions, this new edition represents an essential reference for costume historians, students of fashion history, or anyone involved in creating period costume for the theatre, film or television. It also is fascinating reading for those simply interested in the subject. Clear, concise, and meticulous in detail, this essential reference answers countless questions relating to the history of dress and adornment and promises to be a definitive guide for generations to come.

A Justifiable Obsession' traces the evolution of Ontario's relationship with the federal government in the years following the Second World War. Through extensive archival research in both national and provincial sources, P.E. Bryden demonstrates that the province's successive Conservative governments played a crucial role in framing the national agenda although this central relationship has received little attention compared to those that have been more volatile. As such, Bryden's study sheds light on an important but largely ignored chapter in Canadian political history. Bryden focuses on the politicians and strategists who guided the province through the negotiation of intergovernmental economic, social, and constitutional issues, including tax policies, the design of the new social welfare net, and efforts to patriate the constitution. Written in a lucid, engaging style that captures the spirit of the politics of postwar Canada, 'A Justifiable Obsession' is a significant contribution to our understanding of Ontario's politics and political culture.
Growth Points in Nuclear Physics, Volume 2 covers the progress in the fields of nuclear structure and nuclear reactions. This book is composed of three chapters. The first chapter is devoted to nuclear forces and potentials, in particular the optical model potential that enables the elastic scattering of many particles by nuclei to be calculated in a very simple manner. This chapter also deals with the three-body forces and the spin dependence of the nuclear potential. The second chapter describes higher order processes involving two or more stages, specifically their intrinsic interest and the effect they can have on the total cross-section. The third chapter examines heavy ion reactions, one of the most prominent growth areas of contemporary nuclear physics. Heavy ion reactions are particularly sensitive to some features of nuclear structure, and thus constitute a powerful tool in nuclear structure research. This book will prove useful to nuclear physicists.
Don't be a Dummy" is a primer on automotive safety. It is "Auto Safety 101." What every driver or passenger should know because it May Save Your Life; or a loved one. The author uses personal experience and crash dummies to explain the consequences of not following the laws of Physics and not utilizing the safety features that are available to both drivers and passengers of automotive vehicles. The focus of this book is driver-responsibility and the need to educate the public about common hazards and vehicle misuse. Large car versus small car data analysis warns about vehicle incompatibility and the need for purchasers to consider the serious consequences of selecting a vehicle to buy based only on fuel economy and low cost. Federal safety standards are discussed and what the "Five (5) Star Rating System" really means. ● The quest for "fuel economy" may risk your family's life or result in serious injury! ● Fuel economy may be false economy! ● The size and weight of your vehicle can mean life or death or serious injury! ● Protect loved ones and save the children. Always use the proper child restraint! ● Speed, Alcohol and Drugs are killers. Don't be a Dummy!
Contemporary Models of the Atomic Nucleus discusses nuclear structure and properties, expounding contemporary theoretical concepts of the low-energy nuclear processes underlying in nuclear models. This book focuses on subjects such as the optical nuclear model, unified or collective model, and deuteron stripping reaction. Other topics discussed include the basic nuclear properties; shell model; theoretical analysis of the shell model; and radiative transitions and alpha-decay. The deuteron theory and the liquid drop nuclear model with its application to fission theory are also mentioned, but only briefly discussed. This publication benefits students and researchers conducting work on nuclear physics, specifically on the constituents and interactions of the atomic nucleus.

The portion of Californias Highway 99 between Modesto and Bakersfield presents a fascinating and nostalgic environment. The highway has a unique charm and character that are significant to California natives, visitors, and those who have moved to the California Central Valley over the past century. This roadway has never been upscale or presumptuous but is truly egalitarian. This book is a pictorial and textual history of the highway itself, the cities and towns along the highway, and other locations in Northern California that evoke the same nostalgic feelings. Presented here are images taken in the region before Highway 99 was officially established. It includes images that were captured over the past century of Giant Orange juice stands, vintage signs, historical buildings, and other attractions that are part of the heritage. The authors hope is to entertain, provoke thought, and provide glimpses into obscure slivers of history.
