Examine the most recent developments in molecular plant pathology! This comprehensive reference book describes the molecular biology of plant-pathogen interactions in depth. With Dr. Vidhyasekaran’s keen insights and experienced critical viewpoint, Bacterial Disease Resistance in Plants: Molecular Biology and Biotechnological Applications not only presents reviews of current research but goes on to suggest future research strategies to exploit the studies in interventions with biotechnological, commercial, and field applications. This extraordinarily well-referenced book delivers in-depth examinations of: the molecular recognition process between plants and bacterial pathogens bacterial genes involved in the recognition process hrp, avr, dsp, and hsv genes the transcription of bacterial genes in plants signal transduction systems in bacteria and plants the functions of resistance genes and defense genes at the molecular level the elicitor molecules of bacterial pathogens and plants and their interactions plant and bacterial cell wall modifications and their role in triggering host defense mechanisms Bacterial Disease Resistance in Plants also explores active oxygen species, inducible plant proteins and their signals and transcription mechanisms, inducible secondary metabolites, and more. It introduces novel strategies for bacterial disease management using genes from human beings, birds, crabs, insects, fungi, bacteria, and bacteriophages; and genetic engineering techniques that can be used to develop transgenic, disease-resistant plants. Generously illustrated with figures and tables that make the data more quickly understandable, Bacterial Disease Resistance in Plants will be an invaluable resource and textbook for plant pathologists, bacteriologists, botanists, plant physiologists, plant molecular biologists, microbiologists, biochemists, plant cell and applied biologists, genetic engineers, and graduate-level students in these disciplines.
Dramatic progress in molecular biology and genetic engineering has recently produced an unparalleled wealth of information on the mechanisms of plant and pathogen interactions at the cellular and molecular levels. Completely revised and expanded, Fungal Pathogenesis in Plants and Crops: Molecular Biology and Host Defense Mechanisms, Second Edition
The volume III of the book presents the ways and means to manipulate the signals and signaling system to enhance the expression of plant innate immunity for crop disease management. It also describes bioengineering approaches to develop transgenic plants expressing enhanced disease resistance using plant immunity signaling genes. It also discusses recent commercial development of biotechnological products to manipulate plant innate immunity for crop disease management. Engineering durable nonspecific resistance to phytopathogens is one of the ultimate goals of plant breeding. However, most of the attempts to reach this goal fail as a result of rapid changes in pathogen populations and the sheer diversity of pathogen infection mechanisms. Recently several bioengineering and molecular manipulation technologies have been developed to activate the ‘sleeping’ plant innate immune system, which has potential to detect and suppress the development of a wide range of plant pathogens in economically important crop plants. Enhancing disease resistance through altered regulation of plant immunity signaling systems would be durable and publicly acceptable. Strategies for activation and improvement of plant immunity aim at enhancing host’s capability of recognizing invading pathogens, boosting the executive arsenal of plant immunity, and interfering with virulence strategies employed by microbial pathogens. Major advances in our understanding of the molecular basis of plant immunity and of microbial infection strategies have opened new ways for engineering durable resistance in crop plants.
From the molecular basis of host defense mechanisms and molecular events leading to the suppression of defense mechanisms by fungal pathogens to fungal infection processes, this work covers various aspects of molecular plant pathology. It includes initial contact, penetration and subsequent evasion of post-penetration defense mechanisms. It documents and illustrates up-to-date experimental results and hypotheses.
An easy-to-use single reference source covering the full range of subject areas associated with plant pathology! This comprehensive volume covers the entire field of plant pathology. It does not merely define the numerous subjects covered (297 topics carefully arranged in 38 sections!) but describes them in detail. Each section of this book serves as a comprehensive overview of a given area, providing breadth of coverage for students and depth of coverage for research professionals. In addition to providing a dictionary of plant pathological terms and a complete list of crop diseases, accepted names, synonyms, and anamorphic/telemorphic names of pathogens, the Concise Encyclopedia of Plant Pathology is an essential reference for: the latest nomenclature and classification of each crop bacterial pathogen the complete listing of crop fungal pathogens, with their revised systematic position and classification of viruses into species, genera, families, and orders classification of phytoplasmas and spiroplasmas disease assessment, remote sensing, and digital image analysis molecular diagnostic tools, plant clinics, and forecasting models in depth microbial pesticides induced systemic resistance mycorrhiza molecular marker-assisted selection, pyramiding of genes, and durable resistance genetic engineering and transgenic plants in vitro selection of resistant varieties three kingdoms containing fungal phyla and the most recent refined classification of fungal phyla based on molecular studies bactericides and viricides seed health testing indexing plant-propagation materials plant activators and plant extracts postharvest diseases molecular biology of host resistance the complete list of fungicides, plus ready-formulated fungicide mixtures, classification and mode of action of fungicides, the spectrum of diseases controlled by each fungicide, a computer-based decision support system, fungicide resistance, and modern application equipment and much, much more! With the Concise Encyclopedia of Plant Pathology you'll examine the ancient history of plant pathology; structure, nomenclature, and classification of fungal, bacterial, viral, and phytoplasma pathogens; parasitic protozoa, green algae, nematodes, and parasitic higher plants; disease assessment, remote sensing and digital image analysis; molecular disease diagnostics; disease progress curve models and forecasting models; several novel disease management strategies; and a great deal more. This well-organized, readily accessible reference is an invaluable handbook for students, educators, and practicing plant pathologists.
Plant innate immunity is a potential surveillance system of plants and is the first line of defense against invading pathogens. The immune system is a sleeping system in unstressed healthy plants and is activated on perception of the pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP; the pathogen’s signature) of invading pathogens. The PAMP alarm/danger signals are perceived by plant pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs). The plant immune system uses several second messengers to encode information generated by the PAMPs and deliver the information downstream of PRRs to proteins which decode/interpret signals and initiate defense gene expression. This book describes the most fascinating PAMP-PRR signaling complex and signal transduction systems. It also discusses the highly complex networks of signaling pathways involved in transmission of the signals to induce distinctly different defense-related genes to mount offence against pathogens.
Focusing on the mechanisms of disease resistance in plants, the author examines the possibility of warding off pathogens by connection or disconnection of vital links between different mechanisms and processes, for the purpose of engineering pathogen-resisting plants. This volume investigates cellulose, host enzymes, growth regulators, ascorbic acid, sugars, amino acids, minerals, cross-protection, and physiology as factors in disease resistance.
