An economist with the World Bank Group, Kouassi admits his addiction to the fishing his daddy taught him early on the Djoreh river. From his native village in Côte d'Ivoire to graduate school in America, via the University of Abidjan, this breathtaking story walks you through the ethno-history of his culture and ethnicity. Moreover, it shows how his US-based charity has reached across miles to his home tribe. "Abongui Assah Bow Boka," or "Abongui's Helping Hand" in his native language, is incorporated in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Besides its historical content, the story links closely the value of education to Kouassi's own life.
Fertigation requires a thorough understanding of the science behind the technology to make it deliver the immense possibility it offers in crop production. Though the idea of fertigation existed from the times of solution culture, it did not receive the necessary attention from among plant nutritionists and agronomists when it reappeared in the context of micro irrigation. Fertilizer application in field agriculture has also not developed as a precision technology. Recommendations of the quantum of fertilizers required for a crop, at least in India are not based on current varieties of the crops, nor have they anything to do with the growth rate and developmental changes occurring while a crop is managed by the grower. Most of the fertilizer recommendations are itself very old and efforts to make them relevant to the current growing conditions, soil status, crop variety and crops reaction to the environment etc. are very limited. It is even worse when growers follow traders’ recommendations whose idea is to sell more the fertilizer they supply. Not only lower yields and very low fertilizer use efficiencies, but the deterioration of soil and water bodies are the results. Scheduling means Which nutrient? How much? and When to apply? The basic quantum of NPK used to prepare the schedules is actually the recommended doses (RD) of NPK by relevant public institutions or state agriculture universities. Using these basic recommendations, schedules are prepared to match the growth and the known developmental stages of each crop. In order to enhance the use of the schedules to other regions/countries where different RD is in practice, the book gives information on the basic nutrient split ratios for each growth stage duration. Using these ratios the fertilizers are to be partitioned for each stage of the crop. Each of these parts of fertilizers are then converted into farmer-usable daily doses. However, the schedule is not given on a daily application basis as it was found that most farmers do not want to go for daily dosing (injection). Hence the schedule is reported using a dose for every three days. It is also found that more frequent application schedule will give better yield and nutrient use efficiency. The schedules of most of the crops given in this book are actually field applied by farmers during the last two decades and been in use for several seasons.
