Examining the landmark works that ushered in Italy's golden age of cinema, P. Adams Sitney provides a stylish, historically rich survey of the epochal films made by Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, Luchino Visconti, Federico Fellini, Michelangelo Antonioni, and others in the years after World War II. Remarking on the period in 1957, Pier Paolo Pasolini wrote that its films reflected a "vital crisis" in Italian culture after the fall of Fascism. Sitney expands this conceit to demonstrate the multivalent social and political forces behind a range of movies made from the mid-1940s through the1960s that includes Paisa, La terra trema, Ladri di biciclette, L'Avventura, and La dolce vita. Throughout its pages, the book considers how the nation's cinema depicts the convergence of Christian and Resistance iconography; contemplates the debate over dialect and a national language; deploys cinematic effects for the purposes of political allegory; and incorporates insights from the psychoanalytic discourse that became popular in Italy during the fifties and sixties. This new edition includes an epilogue that extends the range of the study into the 1970s with discussions of Nanni Moretti's Io sono autaurchico, the Tavianis' Padre Padrone, and Ermanno Olmi's L'albero degli zoccoli.

"The Junipers of the World is now the authoritative reference for Juniperus" "Prof. Adams has presented arguments for the recognition of species and varieties by showing the data analyses that led to taxonomic decisions. This is one of the few treatments that really integrates data and the reasoning behind taxonomic decisions. In addition, Prof. Adams is candid in admitting that the recognition of some taxa are not well supported and deserve additional study." "An essential reference book that will be useful for herbaria, museums, wildlife biologists, Range scientist, foresters, ecologists and all who are involved in identification and study of Juniperus species.
The Cinema of Poetry emphasizes the vibrant world of European cinema in addition to incorporating the author's long abiding concerns on American avant-garde cinema.
Critics hailed previous editions of Visionary Film as the most complete work written on the exciting, often puzzling, and always controversial genre of American avant-garde film. This book has remained the standard text on American avant-garde film since the publication of its first edition in 1974. Now P. Adams Sitney has once again revised and updated this classic work, restoring a chapter on the films of Gregory J. Markopoulos and bringing his discussion of the principal genres and major filmmakers up to the year 2000.
Selected by Choice Magazine as an Outstanding Academic Title In 1796, famed engineer and architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe toured the coal fields outside Richmond, Virginia, declaring enthusiastically, "Such a mine of Wealth exists, I believe, nowhere else!" With its abundant and accessible deposits, growing industries, and network of rivers and ports, Virginia stood poised to serve as the center of the young nation's coal trade. By the middle of the nineteenth century, however, Virginia's leadership in the American coal industry had completely unraveled while Pennsylvania, at first slow to exploit its vast reserves of anthracite and bituminous coal, had become the country's leading producer. Sean Patrick Adams compares the political economies of coal in Virginia and Pennsylvania from the late eighteenth century through the Civil War, examining the divergent paths these two states took in developing their ample coal reserves during a critical period of American industrialization. In both cases, Adams finds, state economic policies played a major role. Virginia's failure to exploit the rich coal fields in the western part of the state can be traced to the legislature's overriding concern to protect and promote the interests of the agrarian, slaveholding elite of eastern Virginia. Pennsylvania's more factious legislature enthusiastically embraced a policy of economic growth that resulted in the construction of an extensive transportation network, a statewide geological survey, and support for private investment in its coal fields. Using coal as a barometer of economic change, Old Dominion, Industrial Commonwealth addresses longstanding questions about North-South economic divergence and the role of state government in American industrial development, providing new insights for both political and economic historians of nineteenth-century America.
First published in 1963 as a special issue of Film Culture, it stands as the major theoretical statement by one of avant-garde cinema's most influential figures, a treatise on mythopoeia and the nature of visual experience written in a style as idiosyncratic as his art. By turns lyrical, technical, and philosophical, this is a collection to be shelved alongside the commentaries of Robert Bresson and Maya Deren, Sergei Eisenstein and Nagisa Oshima. Yet despite its historical importance and undeniable influence, the complete Metaphors has remained out of print in the US for over forty years."--Light Industry website (viewed on August 24, 2017).

Sitney analyzes in detail the work of eleven American avant-garde filmmakers as heirs to the aesthetics of exhilaration and innovative vision articulated by Ralph Waldo Emerson and explored by John Cage, Charles Olson and Gertrude Stein. The films discussed span the sixty years since the Second World War. With three chapters each devoted to Stan Brakhage and Robert Beavers, two each to Hollis Frampton and Jonas Mekas, and single chapters on Marie Menken, Ian Hugo, Andrew Noren, Warren Sonbert, Su Friedrich, Ernie Gehr, and Abigail Child, Eyes Upside Down is the fruit of Sitney's lifelong study of visionary aspirations in the American avant-garde cinema.

Tracing the history of modernism in cinema, this study provides readings of a range of classic films made between 1925 and 1980 by such filmmakers as Carl Dreyer, Ingmar Bergman and Robert Bresson. It argues that the act of vision and visual experience are problematized in literary modernism.
Brain injury is a worldwide leading cause of mortality and morbidity and requires early and appropriate management to minimize these adverse sequelae. Despite such needs, access to specialist centers is limited, forcing both immediate and secondary care of these patients onto generalist staff. These responsibilities are made more problematical by differences in patient management between and even within specialist centers, due in part to an insuffcient evidence-base for many interventions directed at brain injury. This book is borne out of the above observations and is targeted at em- gency and acute medicine, anesthetic and general intensive care staff caring for brain injury of diverse etiology, or surgical teams responsible for the inpatient care of minor to moderate head trauma. Although explaining the various facets of specialist care, the book is not intended to compete with texts directed at neurosciences staff, but aims to advise on optimal care in general hospitals, including criteria for transfer, by a combination of narrative on pathophysiology, principles of care, templates for documentation, and highly specifc algorithms for particular problems. It is intended that the content and structure can form the basis of guidelines and protocols that refect the needs of individual units and that can be constantly refned. Our ultimate goal is to promote informed, consistent, auditable, multidisciplinary care for this cohort of patients and we hope that this text contributes to that process.

Finally there is a book that has crafts and projects that are for boys! If you are tired of cutting and gluing 'cutesy' projects, this is the book for you. Designed by a man for men and boys. No fluffy little projects, but real wood working, metal cutting, hammering-type projects. The author has worked with boys for over 25 years in settings ranging from very rural (1000 people in Gruver, TX) to inter-city boys (Waco, TX) to international boys (Honolulu, HI) These years of experiences have been distilled into the top 50 crafts and special events (ex. Pinewood Derby, Chili Cook-off, Tractor Pull, etc.) to be used for family events. Special attention is focused on getting boys to help others by the use of several projects at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. All of the crafts and special events have been field tested with boys and refined to be easy to use. The book is divided into eight sections: Introduction - general ideas about working with boys, getting complex projects cut odwn to the level of younger or older boys. The focus of the book is on boys in 1st - 6th grades (but most projects are great for boys in the 7th - 9th grades, because they can learn to use shop power tools). Also discussed are wood finishing, building self esteem and ministering to elderly in your community. Awards and Patches - A philosophical basis for the value of awards is presented. The names and addresses of several good places to purchase awards and patches are listed in this section. Special Events - Special Events are the heart of a great Boys club. These events involve the families. Eleven great events are detailed with suggestions for running to event, awards and were to get supplies. The events presented are: Air Combat, Bike Rodeo, Campcraft Competition, Catarmaran Competition, Catapults, Chili Cook-off, Dragsters, Pinewood Derby, Toolman Competition and Tractor Pull. Special Events Patches - Eight of the events have custom made patches that are illustrated and made available from the author. The Bike Rodeo and Pinewood Derby use patches from commercial firms (addresses listed). Crafts and Projects - The top 50 crafts and projects for boys are presented in detail. Each craft is illustrated by a photo(s) showing the completed craft. Complex crafts have full-sized plans that are present for photocopying. Each craft has an Introduction, Materials needed, Before the Meeting (cutting out the parts), and Assembly at the Meeting features. For crafts/projects that can be used for Special Events, there is a discussion on how to have an event competition. All the crafts have been 'boy tested'. You will enjoy the detailed presentation for each craft. Helping the boys to listen - This is a special section that presents the idea of using 'Story Recall Games' to keep the boys listening during the meeting. This innovative approach has resulted in boys being much more attentive while listening (or reading) a story. When they expect to play a 'story recall game' they really listen. Top 10 ways to Memorize - Many boys clubs learn Bible verses, pledge and/or mottoes during their meetings. Ten fun ways are presented to help boys learn to memorize. Try these and you will be surprised how fast boys can learn (and have fun doing it). Where To Get It - No good book on 'how to do it', would be complete without telling you 'Where to get it'. This section lists sources for all kinds of materials, crafts supplies, awards and much more. Finally the book is concluded with a cross-indexed list of the crafts by uses: Christmas Projects, Easter Gifts, Father's Day projects, Games for group competition, Games for personal use, Mother's Day projects, Projects to take home, Puzzles, Science Games and Thanksgiving Projects. So this makes it easy to find a project for your needs.

An interdisciplinary exploration of pharmacology. By its very nature, pharmacology is a challenging interdisciplinary subject that requires understanding concepts from a wide variety of the natural and applied sciences to predict drug action. For this reason, authors Holland, Adams, and Brice have organized Core Concepts in Pharmacology according to body systems and diseases, placing drugs in the context of their therapeutic use. This gives students easier access to the prerequisite anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology organized in the same chapter where the drugs are discussed. The Fifth Edition continues its prototype approach of introducing, in detail, the one or two most representative drugs in each class. It also maintains a strong emphasis on safe, effective nursing care with a new chapter on preventing medication errors, features new Drug Focus boxes to cover emerging drugs, and includes many more new and updated features.
