This manual is aimed at mental health professionals working with young people in early psychosis, those managing group programs for young people with early psychosis and individuals responsible for early psychosis service development.The content of this manual has been derived from more than 20 years of experience of implementing group programs and delivering group interventions to young people as part of the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) at Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program (OYHCP).
This manual outlines a treatment for young people at risk of developing schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders including affective psychosis.Such clients are referred to as being at 'ultra high risk' (UHR) of psychosis or as experiencing an 'at-risk mental state' (ARMS). The approach outlined in this manual has been developed, and is implemented, as the Personal Assessment and Crisis Evaluation (PACE) Clinic at Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program in Melbourne, Australia, historically the first clinic to provide a clinical research service for UHR clients.
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is associated with higher rates of comorbid mental disorder, especially at times of increased stress and change. There are various challenges for mental health professionals working with this group - the recognition and diagnosis of ASD where it has not been previously diagnosed; differentiating between ASD and symptoms of a comorbid mental disorder; and providing an intervention that takes into account both the ASD and psychiatric comorbidity.This manual has been developed by Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program, with support from the Autism State Plan (Victorian Government 2009) to assist mental health professionals working with adolescents and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder and comorbid mental disorders. The manual provides tools to assist with the recognition, formulation and treatment of ASD in specialist health settings. It includes some developmentally appropriate resources and visual aids to support clinical work.
The content of this manual has been derived from international evidence combined with many years of experience of planning, implementing and delivering early psychosis interventions to young people and their families.This manual presents evidence and clinical expertise to help services establish and implement a vocational recovery program with a practical focus.It is based on the vocational recovery program developed and implemented at Orygen in Melbourne, Australia, using specific examples from the vocational recovery program at Orygen Youth Health Clinical Program, as well as from other services available within Australia.Although the manual has been developed based on the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) Model, the information contained in this manual may be more broadly applied in the field of youth mental health.
This guide has been produced by the EPPIC National Support Program of the Orygen as a way to explain the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre (EPPIC) model and to assist services when thinking about and planning for the implementation and provision of an ongoing EPPIC service.The philosophy, aims and comprehensiveness of the model, along with a detailed description of each of the core components is provided. In particular, there is discussion about the four critical factors that are essential not only for the successful implementation of an EPPIC service, but also for sustaining one.While each of the core components can be read separately it is important to note that the EPPIC model can only exist when all of the core components are provided. They also interrelate, so it is only when each of these core components are in place that an integrated and comprehensive service can be provided and achieve fidelity to the EPPIC model.Included in the discussion on each of the core components are the opportunities and factors that facilitate success, as well as the challenges and enablers that can help in meeting both the service level and clinical level issues that may arise.There is a section on scaling up of services, as this can be one option to assist after initial implementation.Clear detail is provided of all of the EPPIC standards, and these are divided into three groups. The first of these are the minimum essential or 'given' standards that will occur when implementing the model with the core components. The next are the secondary standards that need to be achieved, and the third are the guidelines that also incorporate the Australian Clinical Guidelines for Early Psychosis (2nd edition). By services taking note of and achieving these standards, fidelity to the model should be reached.
The briefing pack was produced by the EPPIC National Support Program of the Orygen to briefly describe the rationale and outline of the Early Psychosis Prevention and Intervention Centre( EPPIC) model and the 16 core components that make up the comprehensive model.The pack can be used by services and clinicians as an initial understanding of the EPPIC model and considerations for service development activities.
