The considerable growth of RFID is currently accompanied by the development of numerous identification technologies that complement those already available while seeking to answer new problems. Chipless RFID is one example.The goal is to both significantly reduce the price of the tag and increase the amount of information it contains, in order to compete with the barcode while retaining the benefits of a flexible reading approach based on radio communication.To solve the problem of the number of bits, this book describes the possibility of coding the information at the level of the overall shape of the RCS of the tag, which would facilitate reaching very large quantities. The design of the tags then returns to the resolution of the inverse problem of the electromagnetic signature. The proposed design methodology regularizes the problem by decomposing the signature on a basis of elementary patterns whose signature is chosen in advance. - Includes a theoretical presentation of scattering phenomenon in electromagnetism, regrouping elements from classical RFID, pulse radar, and antenna theory - Features a new coding technique based on magnitude level that is presented and characterized for different kinds of tags - Proposes, for the first time, RCS synthesis based on a physical approach for wide-frequency bands

The term "hyperdocumentation" is a hyperbole that seems to characterize a paradox. The leading discussions on this topic bring in diverse ideas such as that of data, the fantasy of Big Data, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, algorithmic processing, the flow of information and the outstanding successes of disinformation. The purpose of this book is to show that the current context of documentation is just another step in human construction that has been ongoing for not centuries but millennia and which, since the end of the 19th century, has been accelerating. Coined by Paul Otlet in 1934 in his Traite de Documentation, "hyperdocumentation" refers to the concept of documentation that is constantly being expanded and extended in its functionalities and prerogatives. While, according to Otlet, everything could potentially be documented in this way, increasingly we find that it is our lives that are being hyperdocumented. Hyperdocumentation manifests as an increase not only in the quantity of information that is processed but also in its scope, as information is progressively integrated across areas that were previously poorly documented or even undocumented.

Status epilepticus (SE) is a state of continuous epileptic activity, the duration of which varies from minutes to hours according to etiology. It may exhibit the various clinical expressions of epileptic seizures: convulsive clonic, tonic, or tonic–clonic, nonconvulsive including focal or absence, the latter being typical or atypical; it may be focal, unilateral, or bilateral. Mixed seizure types may affect epileptic encephalopathies (i.e., Lennox–Gastaut syndrome). SE may consist of a single seizure or repeat seizures without recovery of consciousness. It may be symptomatic of some acute brain damage or complicated epilepsy, either at onset or in the course, usually symptomatic although occasionally idiopathic (i.e., occipital epilepsy). A clue to diagnosis is drawn from clinical characteristics including history but nonconvulsive SE requires EEG recording. Specific conditions need to be identified, namely those occurring after acute nonspecific infection: “hemiconvulsion–hemiplegia–epilepsy” (HHE) syndrome and “fever-induced refractory epileptic encephalopathy in school age children” (FIRES) begin with status epilepticus. Appropriate treatment requires identification of the cause, including some epilepsy syndrome. This permits etiological in addition to symptomatic treatment. Brain energy supply is a crucial component: drugs that may alter cerebral blood flow (e.g., barbiturates) should be restricted to specific conditions. Nonchemical treatment, including the ketogenic diet, may play an increasing role.

Following the end of World War II, France attempted to reassert control over its colonies in Indochina. In Vietnam, this was resisted by the Viet Minh leading to the First Indochina War. By 1954, the French army was on the defensive and determined to force the Viet Minh into a decisive set-piece battle at Dien Bien Phu. Over the past five decades, Western authors have generally followed a standard narrative of the siege of Dien Bien Phu, depicting the Viet Minh besiegers as a faceless horde which overwhelmed the intrepid garrison by sheer weight of numbers, superior firepower, and logistics. However, a wealth of new Vietnamese-language sources tell a very different story, revealing for the first time the true Viet Minh order of battle and the details of the severe logistical constraints within which the besiegers had to operate. Using these sources, complemented by interviews with French veterans and research in the French Army and French Foreign Legion archives, this book, now publishing in paperback, provides a new telling of the climactic battle in the Indochina War, the conflict that set the stage for the Vietnam War a decade later.

The gross pathology of each disease is illustrated by well selected, high quality CT scans and supporting neuroradiological studies. Each caption begins with the relevant clinical data, so the reader understands the clinical context in which the study was obtained. The caption then describes the specific CT features of the case, so the reader learns to interpret the images correctly to arrive at the final diagnosis. By this technique, the authors provide the reader with a large experience in all aspects of pediatric cranial CT and teach him to distinguish properly among the diverse disease states. The authors must be congratulated for their excellence and their me ticulous attention to detail. They have written an important book that brings together the fields of pediatric neurology and pediatric cranial CT, enhancing both. This volume is a necessary addition to the personal and professional libraries of all physicians who care for children: pediatri cians, neurologists, neurosurgeons and radiologists. I feel I am a better physician for having read this text.

This book examines security cooperation between Western states. Security cooperation occurs between Western (i.e. European and North American) states as a coping mechanism, as an imperfect substitute for integration. The book investigates the reasons for cooperation, what Aristotle called the ‘final cause’, as well as the material, formal, and efficient causes of cooperation. Such a causal explanation is based on a Critical Realist philosophy of social science. The book is also based on an embedded multiple-case study; the states studied are the United States, France, and Luxembourg. Within each state, the embedded subcases are three types of state security organizations: the armed forces, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies, which have rarely been compared in this way. Comparing different types of states and different types of state security organizations has allowed temporal, spatial, national, and functional variation in cooperation to be identified and theorized. The empirical evidence studied includes participant observations at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and documents such as state policy documents, annual reports by organizations, reports by parliaments and non-governmental organizations, autobiographies, books by investigative journalists, and articles by newspapers and magazines. The book is also based on a score of elite interviews with ambassadors, diplomatic liaisons, ministerial advisors, foreign ministry officials, and military commanders. This book will be of much interest to students of security studies, intelligence studies, military studies and International Relations in general.
