They had initially made yearly vacation visits to the United States. Those were fun and relaxation times. But the monumental insecurity in their homeland coupled with disgust with the incessant mounting corruption and harassment from men in flowing robes and in uniform who were supposed to protect the citizens became so unbearable that the couple started surveying avenues for relocation to Gods Own Country. When the opportunity finally came by, and the couple landed in Los Angeles airport they came to discover new challenges which they were to grapple with. The belief that a perfect spot to perch had been found was soon to be soured by the saga of two apparently innocuous tubers of yams whose combined value was less than one dollar. Even after the yams were confiscated and destroyed at the airport the aftermath of the violation was to replay nearly five years later when naturalization for citizenship of the United States was sought. The enormous powers of two tubers of yams were greatly displayed as the applicants grappled with unforeseen situations which had sought to thwart the life-long desires of a couple to be participants of the promises of Gods own country. Would the promise of realization of the American Dream succumb to the evil machinations of two inanimate tubers of yams? Or would the justice and fair play in a country that prides itself with its trust in God; one that holds certain truths as self evident, once again proclaim its superiority over apparent trivialities in the Land of the free and the Home of the brave.

A poor barely educated village boy Eberechi works his way through life and makes a success of his retail clothing business. He decides to compensate for his lack of formal education by sending his teenage twin sons overseas to study in the United States. He spares no finances in the education of his sons. The latter do not take into consideration the enormous sacrifices being made by their father. They live luxuriously and squander their funds. They enter into marriages of convenience which are later to blossom into true love after the twins sons settle down to raise families. But the marriages are not in conformity with what the twins’ parents are familiar with and so fail to gain the necessary recognition and support of the twins ‘parents. These latter connive with each other and secure a wife by arranged marriage for each of their twin sons. The twin sons lured home by the huge financial benefits which acceptance of the arranged marriages would bring, acquiesce to the arranged marriages, collect the benefits abandon their new brides and disappear back to America. Fame and fortune smile on the abandoned brides when two of the biggest economic pillars of the community fall in love with, and marry the abandoned brides bringing them over to America. Mischance and curiosity again bring one of the twins into an unplanned collision course with his abandoned former bride and the law. The law of retributive justice appears to take its toll on the estranged former bridegroom and his brother who had grossly alienated themselves from their roots and denied their children the opportunity of speaking even the language of their fathers. Time the healer of wounds is expected to bring about the healing even in the midst of the failed expectations of a distraught father, a garrulous society and a rapidly changing world. A compelling story plays out, with intrigues, deep cultural attachment, squander mania, manipulations, financial arm twisting, love, cheating and a mother’s unflinching devotion to his children.

An internal struggle for power between a few of its politicians is amicably sorted out in the interest of national cohesion. An army coup dtat that involved a lopsided assassination of principal officers and civilian leaders is followed by a countercoup with indiscriminate killing of officers and civilians alike. A devastating civil war in which the former colonial master plays less than an impartial role follows. An unusual collaboration between the Eastern and Western world power blocks ensures the defeat of the rebellious section of the country. That section had declared that its military technology was light-years ahead of that of the other side, perhaps thereby, provoking cooperation against her by strange bedfellows. The acclaimed leader of the free world is apparently persuaded to play a mere observer role under the persuasion that the conflict is an internal affair of the concerned country. The discovery of massive reserves of oil places the reunited country in an unprecedented economic advantage. But the new rich status of the country does not translate to a better life for the majority of the countrys peoples as monumental and unimaginable levels of corruption bedevils the framework of the once promising nation whose patriots of old had sacrificed so much to ensure its independence and progress. What went wrong? With the corruption of the young, even from the cradles, are there hopes for a return to the path of good and patriotic governance?

From a safe distance, the minion, man, details his more gullible fellow men to sacrifi ce themselves and others in silly and assumed defense of the Almighty Maker. The martyr and suicide bomber along with their victims become the willing and unwilling by-products But even in spite of his sometimes comical shenanigans, man, who unsuccessfully plays the angel on Earth, remains man and suffers or causes others to suffer the pains arising from a perpetual struggle between the good and the bad as represented in Rap to Mars by Earths angels, suicide bombers, and whores. At the end of the day, man, mere mortal man, still fi nds himself trapped in his self-imposed cocoon of a shanty or a mansion. In the latter, man again plays the elitist parent of a lone child while the downtrodden fi nd their pleasure by doggedly obeying the injunction of increase and multiply. Rap to Mars is a mixed grill of fun, challenges, and what the evolving society was, what it is, and what it should fi ght hard not to be.

A male child Udoka, born to a family of five daughters and one son is raised by his single mother after the boy’s father dies prematurely in a rural third world community. The boy drops out of school at a very early age and joins the company of village loafers called “ofekes” and “ofo-ogolis.” These specialize in hanging around where there are wedding ceremonies, burial, and chieftaincy installation ceremonies, venues where there will be free food and free drinks. During one of such ceremonies in which Mr. Odike his cousin is taking a second wife, the uneducated Udoka sees, and falls in love with Chioma who is educated and who hails from a completely different social background being a catechist’s daughter. Udoka gets rebuffed. Twist of fate again brings both young people together and through encouragement from Chioma, Udoka goes to school, progresses, and ultimately marries Chioma. Further twist of fate sees the couple move over to Atlanta in America where Chioma trains for, and becomes a registered nurse and starts earning well. Her new situation positions Chioma into seeing Dr. Gerald an attending consultant in the hospital where she works. Chioma falls in love with the rich medical doctor and without provocation, divorces her beleaguered husband who, laden with the burden of debts and child support, flees from Atlanta back to his Akunwanta native land. Chioma gets disappointed by Dr. Gerald after she aborts a baby she was expecting for him. The polygamous nature of the common Akunwanta origin of the divorced former couple holds out the only opportunity whereby Chioma can find a place as a second wife to a now prosperous and polygamous Udoka. The monogamy by law policy in Atlanta as opposed to the accepted polygamy by culture in Akunwanta plays out favorably for both parties as it becomes possible for Udoka to remain monogamous in Atlanta but polygamous in Akunwanta. One man’s apparent poison plays out as another man’s delicious meat. Will the one learn from the other?

Insecurity to his person, as manifested by armed attacks, compels him to immigrate to the United States of America. He is required by the regulations to literally start his professional career from the basics. Scaling through the basics becomes a tall order, and he finds relief and fulfillment in reversing course. He deliberately takes on a job at the lowest rungs of the care ladder, ministering to and interacting with Alzheimer’s residents and people with memory loss. His experience and impressions about the future, about the lives of, and care for the aged and the most dependent of American society, and generally about daily living are portrayed for the benefit of the general society and those who may later consider coming late to America.

Fame and fortune smile on the doctor after his specialization and he secures appointment as a staff of a teaching hospital in another region of his native country after an initial discriminatory rejection during an interview. Through further good luck coupled with his sterling qualities of honesty he gets appointed as a chairman of one of his countrys largest mining companies after an accelerated promotion in his professional practice. He excels in the administration of the fledging company and turns its fortunes around within a very short time. His uncompromising stance against corruption, the very ills that had earlier wrecked the company, pitches him against certain highly-placed individuals whose corrupt exploitation of the industry were blocked by the chairmans uncompromising stance with evil practices. The Chairman gets fired but his undeniable qualities again get him noticed by the presidency of his country which appoints him the president of his University. History repeats itself as a result of insistence on transparency again leading to flight and resignation of the Vice Chancellor. Unfortunately infidelity and inattentiveness to family matters leads to the failure of the Vice Chancellors marriage. Failure of attempts to repair the damages finally leads a once promising young man into headlong dash for dinner with the devil with consequent disastrous consequences for Konganoga the country that was being fleeced. Konganoga: Mauling the Polity is a thrilling tale of the persistent clash between good and evil and the effects against a once great and a promising people and nation.

A distinction is drawn between two very similarities based on the two types of characters that the same type of society produced. Orie, Puzo and Nmaku who hail from Angwa and the adjoining Ocha remained back in the village and made their lives almost permanently there rarely knowing what was going on in the outside world but being nonetheless greatly influenced by the latter. Their daily chores are dictated by the daily basic necessities of the moment and they have little to worry perpetually about. A lot of their life is controlled by the dictations and predictions of the traditional medicine man who occasionally misfires in his predictions which have no scientific basis supporting them. His situation is often taken advantage of by the political class who have little or nothing to lose even if the polity collapses. But Livinus on the other end of the spectrum emerges from the civil war and through a dint of luck and hard work studies hard and becomes a doctor. He even proceeds overseas despite a close shave by arsonists. He specializes and returns home to Akunwanta town from where he is again catapulted by fate and focus to become the governor of his state after a battle between titans eliminates the principal contestants. He at first meant well and had the intention of helping to reform society. Post election litigation and his lack of the economic leverage almost cost him his mandate. But again fate plays a hard one on him and because of his lack of cash he gets tied up to the economic vampires of his society. He is bailed out by a coalition of these vampires and narrowly reclaims his mandate only after colossal bribing of umpires who were least expected to soil their hands. He decides never to go begging ever again and hence he delves headlong into the rot and decay, not by his will but by the circumstances prevailing around him.

A brilliant medical doctor works his way through the help of a pen pal into a specialist training course in a foreign country. Initially lonely and friendless save for his benefactor pen pal he later warms his way into the love of an indigenous staff nurse in the hospital where he did his residency program. Fame and fortune smile on the doctor after his specialization and he secures appointment as a staff of a teaching hospital in another region of his native country after an initial discriminatory rejection during an interview. Through further good luck coupled with his sterling qualities of honesty he gets appointed as a chairman of one of his country's largest mining companies after an accelerated promotion in his professional practice. He excels in the administration of the fledging company and turns its fortunes around within a very short time. His uncompromising stance against corruption, the very ills that had earlier wrecked the company, pitches him against certain highly-placed individuals whose corrupt exploitation of the industry were blocked by the chairman's uncompromising stance with evil practices. The Chairman gets fired but his undeniable qualities again get him noticed by the presidency of his country which appoints him the president of his University. History repeats itself as a result of insistence on transparency again leading to flight and resignation of the Vice Chancellor. Unfortunately infidelity and inattentiveness to family matters leads to the failure of the Vice Chancellor's marriage. Failure of attempts to repair the damages finally leads a once promising young man into headlong dash for dinner with the devil with consequent disastrous consequences for Konganoga the country that was being fleeced. "Konganoga: Mauling the Polity" is a thrilling tale of the persistent clash between good and evil and the effects against a once great and a promising people and nation.
