The focus is on theoretical investigation and applicative algorithm development for reduction in the complexity – the dimension, the degrees of freedom, the data – arising in these models. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of mathematical investigation of balance laws. They arise in many areas of physics, mechanics, chemistry, biology, social sciences. In this collective book we concentrate in particular on the equations of continuous medium and related to them. As a rule, they are very complicated in their primitive form. An important feature of such equations is a possible formation of singularities even in initially smooth solution within a finite time. The structure of the singularities can be very complex. A natural step in the approach to this problem is the transition, despite the three-dimensionality of our world, to spatially one-dimensional model. Significant progress has been achieved in this direction. Unfortunately, the methods of the one-dimensional theory, as usual, cannot be adapted to a case of many spatial variables. However, there are many attempts to deal with multidimensional problems. We would like to present some of them. All of the papers are written by outstanding experts, representing various schools in mathematics and mechanics. Each paper is organised as follows: it contains an elementary (as far as it is possible) introduction to a problem, a brief review of previously published results, and then original results of the authors are presented.

In the course of these studies, a single approach to the modeling of radiation effects on mammals has been elaborated. Speci?cally, in the framework of the developed deterministic mathematical models, the effects of both acute and chronic irradiation in a wide range of doses and dose rates on vital body systems (hematopoiesis, small intestine, and humoral immunity), as well as on the development of autoimmune diseases, are investigated. The radiation effects on the mortality dynamics in homogeneous and nonhomogeneous(in radiosensitivity) mammalian populations are also studied by making use of the developed stochastic models. The most appealing feature of these mortality models consists of the fact that they account for the intrinsic properties of the exposed organism. Namely, within these models the stochastic biometrical functions are calculated proceeding from statistical characteristics and dynamics of the respective critical body system (hematopoiesis or small intestine). The performed theoretical investigations contribute to the development of the system and quantitative approaches in radiation biology and ecology. These studies elucidate the major regulatory mechanisms of the damage and recovery processes running in the vital body systems of exposed mammals and reveal the key par- eters characterizing the processes.

This monograph overviews classic and recent developments in theoretical statistical optics in connection with stationary and non-stationary (pulsed) optical source characterization and modeling, discusses various phenomena occurring with random light propagating in free space, on its interaction with optical systems, extended media and particulate collections. The text includes scalar, beam-like and general electromagnetic treatment of light. A brief statistical description of four fundamental experiments relating to random light: spatial and temporal field interference, intensity interferometry and phase conjugation, is also included in order to relate the analytical descriptions with practical observations.Rigorous mathematical methods for statistical manipulation of light sources useful for remote shaping of its various average properties, enhanced image resolution, optimized transmission in random media and for other applications are introduced. For illustration of efficient ways for manipulation of light polarization the generalized Stokes-Mueller calculus is applied for description of interaction of beam-like fields with classic and currently popular devices of polarization optics, including a spatial light modulator.Random light plays a special role in the image formation process.
