This book is based on research carried out by the author in close collabora tion with a number of colleagues. In particular, I wish to thank Per Bak, A. John Berlinsky, Hans C. Fogedby, Barry Frank, S. 1. Knak Jensen, David Mukamel, David Pink, and Martin Zuckermann for fruitful and extremely stimulating cooperation. It is a pleasure for me to note that active interaction with most of these colleagues is still continuing. The work has been performed at several different institutions, notably the Department of Chemistry, Aarhus University, Denmark, and the Depart ment of Physics, University of British Columb~a, Canada. The Nordic Atlantic area has seen remarkable examples of social formations in areas that many would perceive as too remote to allow the construction of functioning communities. But through innovations, networking and the formation of identities people have coped with distances, thus continuously rebuilding societies in Northern Norway, Iceland, the Faroes, and Greenland. Living conditions in the Nordic Atlantic are so extreme that one might ask whether the notion of society is applicable under these circumstances. The author argues that, yes, there is a meaningful way of comprehending these social formations, which is through the spatial and temporal practices that produce, reproduce, stabilize, destabilize and change them. He introduces the concept of coping, which means neither mastering nor adapting but relates to in-between strategies and tactics reflected in practices of securing people’s way of life under conditions that are never totally under their control.

This book is about the relationship between media, communication and globalization, explored through the unique empirical study of electronic music practitioners’ use of the global social media: MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. To understand the significance of the emerging nexus between social media and music in a global context, the book explores various aspects of production, distribution and consumption among electronic music practitioners as they engage with global social media, as well as a historical, political and economic exposition of the rise of this global social media environment. Drawing on interview-based research with electronic music artists, DJs, producers and managers, together with the historical portrayal of the emergence of global social media this pioneering study aims to capture a development taking place in music culture within the wider transformations of the media and communications landscape; from analogue to digital, from national to global, and from a largely passive to more active media use. In doing so, it explores the emergence of a media and communications ecology with increased mobility, velocity and uncertainty. The numerous competing, and rapidly growing and fading social media exemplify the vitality and volatility of the transforming global media, communication and cultural landscape. This study suggests that the music practitioner’s relationship with MySpace, Facebook, YouTube and Twitter and the key characteristics of these global social media, alter aspects of our practical and theoretical understandings of the process of media globalization. For well over a century, Chinese fengshui, or "geomancy," has interested Western laymen and scholars. An ethnographic study of anti-nuclear movement groups that both challenges assumptions of traditional social movement studies of strategic action and shows what can be gained through microanalysis of talk in meetings, this book advances social movement studies methodologically and theoretically through the application of a new method of sequential analysis. Drawing on both conversation analysis and objective hermeneutics, it builds on microanalysis to scale up from sequences of talk to meetings, from meetings to groups, and from groups to the anti-nuclear movement, thus addressing a common criticism of analyses of face-to-face interactions: that they fail to demonstrate how their findings are relevant for questions beyond the interaction itself and thus for a broader sociological audience. A demonstration of the ways in which strategic deliberations by activists are subject to dynamics of face-to-face interaction, Talking Collective Action shows how groups adopt different styles of planning to engage with their environment and affect the groups’ development over time. As such, it will appeal to social scientists with interests in social movements, organizations and conversation analysis.

The nature of spatial imaginations has become central to a range of major social and political debates. Narratives on spatial inequality, from the North-South divide in global economic and political visions, to marginalisation and 'ghettoisation' in Western cities, appear regularly in our daily newspapers. Such examples indicate that issues of space/spatiality are as crucial in our current societies as never before. 'Space Odysseys' brings together leading social scientists including John Urry and Derek Gregory to address a number of central issues in spatiality and social relations in the early 21st century. Starting from the presupposition that space is a social dimension and a social construct, it then presents examples of these conceptions of space at work. While the book title's indirect reference to the film '2001: A Space Odyssey' indicates the contributors' interest in questions of voyages and mobility, the plural use shows that the approaches to this conceptual exploration are multiple, reflecting differences in experience, in social context and/or in gender, class and ethnicity. The book is divided into three main sections. The first explores issues of 'mobility, immobility and embodied narratives', the second section deals with 'territoriality, mobility and identity politics and the final section concludes with chapters on 'the spatial production of knowledge'.

This book focuses on gathering the numerous properties and many different connections with various topics in geometric function theory that quasidisks possess. A quasidisk is the image of a disk under a quasiconformal mapping of the Riemann sphere. In 1981 Frederick W. Gehring gave a short course of six lectures on this topic in Montreal and his lecture notes ``Characteristic Properties of Quasidisks'' were published by the University Press of the University of Montreal. The notes became quite popular and within the next decade the number of characterizing properties of quasidisks and their ramifications increased tremendously. In the late 1990s Gehring and Hag decided to write an expanded version of the Montreal notes. At three times the size of the original notes, it turned into much more than just an extended version. New topics include two-sided criteria. The text will be a valuable resource for current and future researchers in various branches of analysis and geometry, and with its clear and elegant exposition the book can also serve as a text for a graduate course on selected topics in function theory. Frederick W. Gehring (1925-2012) was a leading figure in the theory of quasiconformal mappings for over fifty years. He received numerous awards and shared his passion for mathematics generously by mentoring twenty-nine Ph.D. students and more than forty postdoctoral fellows. Kari Hag received her Ph.D. under Gehring's direction in 1972 and worked with him on the present text for more than a decade.

In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.
