This book offers the first comprehensive account of the development of the Romanian morphological system. Romanian is one of the most morphologically complex Romance languages, but has remained relatively understudied compared with better-known languages such as French and Spanish. Following an introduction that provides an outline of the history of Romanian, its writing system and major typological characteristics, and the major patterns of allomorphy, chapters in this volume explore a range of fascinatingly complex aspects of Romanian grammar whose structure and history have to date been largely inaccessible to the English-speaking world. Among the most distinctive morphological characteristics of Romanian discussed by the authors are its inflexional case system; the highly unpredictable formation of the plural; the existence of a non-finite verb form that appears to be the continuation of the Latin supine; the near-absence of distinctive subjunctive morphology; and the complex patterns of allomorphy brought about by successive sound change. The frequently controversial origins of many of these developments have important implications for broader historical Romance linguistics and indeed for morphological theory more generally.

Contemporary French writers have embarked on various quests for new sources of thematic and formal inspiration which are increasingly tied to issues of postcolonial legacies. However, French literature has never been consistently examined through the lens of race, ethnicity, and its relation to (post)coloniality. Fictions of Race in Contemporary French Literature is the first scholarly study to engage with the figure of the White writer and explore the White literary gaze in contemporary France. The book highlights the inherent postcoloniality of White Hexagonal literature in a context marked by institutionalized colour-blindness, and offers a reflection on responsible writing in and about postcolonial France. The book identifies a set of formal features, functions, and aesthetic dispositions which reveal the ways in which White writers grapple with postcolonial subjects. It focuses on seven case studies featuring texts by Marie Darrieussecq, Virginie Despentes, Annie Ernaux, Nicolas Fargues, Pierre Lemaitre, ?douard Louis, and Nicolas Mathieu. Achille and Pana?t? argue that it is imperative to recast the enduring boundedness of race and empire as a matter of equal concern to White and non-White writers.

It reveals that several ‘champion’ instruments feature frequently in the case law: the guidelines on fines and the leniency notice in competition law, the state aid instruments on aid to be granted to enterprises in difficulty, regional aid, de minimis aid, and aid to be granted to SMEs – all of them having in common the fact that they regulate highly litigated areas. The analysis treats issues such as the following: ; the pathway from judicial ignorance to judicial acknowledgement of soft law; ; the judicial creation of legal ‘hybrids’; the judicial review of soft law; the potential use of soft law as a ‘sword’ or as a ‘shield’ in a court of law; the distinction between legally binding force and legal effects; how soft law can produce legal effects through the operation of general principles of law such as legitimate expectations, legal certainty, or human rights; and how the Courts locate soft law on a strong constitutional pluralist background. Although the analysis might appear to relate to a fairly narrow spectrum of EU law, in fact the interaction of soft law and legal principles reaches into many diverse areas of law, and increasingly so in the twenty-first century. Aiming at both identifying the representation of femininity as a social construct and analysing the way in which it can be translated into film adaptations of novels, this work focuses on the interpretations of a famous and, at the same time, problematic literary work, namely the 1994 film Little Women (dir. Gillian Armstrong), reworking the classic nineteenth-century American best-seller “Little Women” by Louisa May Alcott. In particular, drawing on the critical apparatus of feminism(s), the paper lays emphasis on the way in which the metafictional texture of the novel captures instances of reality into fiction, glimpses of autobiography and, of course, femininity at the level of the filmic text. Such aspects are then considered from the perspective of adaptation and translation theories: contrasting the literary translation with the audio-visual one, the undertaking means to highlight the losses in the latter mode of expression and the extent to which the defining elements aforementioned are preserved in the Romanian language.
