Mountain men, fur traders, and Native Americans often traveled through Northwestern Wyoming's beautiful upper Wind River Valley. The valley's rugged mountain terrain discouraged permanent settlement until the late 1880s, when homesteaders arrived in search of free land. Most early settlements have vanished, but the tiny community nestled along the Wind River that would become Dubois thrived, and it soon had a bank, store, and saloon. The upper valley's high elevation and short growing season quickly discouraged farming, and those who remained learned to make a living from travelers passing through on their way to visit the recently created Yellowstone National Park. Others earned their living cutting timber in the new national forest that had been set aside to protect Yellowstone. A railroad tie-cutting operation in the national forest supplied the country's railroads with cross ties for more than 40 years.

Accidents of Influence combines critical analysis with personal response and autobiographical moments. It includes quotidian encounters in friendship, sex, society, art, politics, response to violence, and religious observance, which struggle for moral ground in this post-Holocaust era.
This true story being told happened in New England between 1912 and 1948. Many interesting things happened in this time period: Two World Wars, a major depression and the consequences of these events. The stories of these times as recalled from the memory of Norma are not in great detail, but come together to show how life and times affect one’s destiny. Small incidences in the area of religion seem to start out and come to the front of the story. The detailed conclusion of the story pulls everything together in a way that shows a probable design which can only be seen as time permits. An interesting part of the story is the contrast between the life of a grandmother and the life of grandchildren who seem to live in a different world. And so, destinies are still taking shape.
In front of you is the finished product of your work, the text of your contributions to the 2003 Dayton International Symposium on Cell Volume and Signal Transduction. As we all recall, this symposium brought together the Doyens of Cellular and Molecular Physiology as well as aspiring young investigators and students in this field. It became a memorable event in an illustrious series of International Symposia on Cell Volume and Signaling. This series, started by Professors Vladimir Strbák, Florian Lang and Monte Greer in Smolenice, Slovakia in 1997 and continued by Professors Rolf Kinne, Florian Lang and Frank Wehner in Berlin in 2000, is projected for 2005 in Copenhagen to be hosted by our colleague, Professor Else Hoffmann and her team. We dearly miss Monte Greer to whom this symposium was dedicated and addressed so eloquently by Vladimir Strbák in his Dedication to Monte. Monte and I became friends in Smolenice and had begun to discuss the 2003 meeting only a few days before his tragic accident in 2002. There are others who were not with us, and we missed them, too. We would not have been able to succeed in this event without the unflagging support of our higher administration at Wright State University, the NIDDKD of the National Institute of Health, and the Fuji Medical System (see Acknowledgments).
