Painful as was this journey, I knew I needed to write this book. Many details were either obliterated by the trauma of some dark days, or I just could not bring myself to delve deeply enough to bring them up. However, I welcome any opportunity to dialogue with and to answer questions from individuals or interested groups, small or large. In an effort to protect the privacy of my daughter, all names - including my own - have been changed. In addition, the names of some locations have been changed. Even though the general public has come a long way in understanding mental illness since the events that took place in this book have occurred, there are still many people who cannot differentiate between deliberate sinful actions and involuntary sick behavior. It is my desire to help shocked and concerned loved ones be able to separate the person from the sickness. And finally, I wish to convey through the writing of this book that "Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it." Song of Solomon 8:7.

Coping and Defending: Processes of Self-Environment Organization investigates coping and defending within the context of personal-social psychology, with emphasis on processes of self-environment organization. Topics range from ego and stress to personality theory, family, and child rearing. Comprised of 13 chapters, this book begins with a discussion on theories and conceptualizations of ego, paying particular attention to its logical constraints as state; the neomechanical personal man; rational choice; and continuity and discontinuity in states. Subsequent chapters explore coping, defense, and fragmentation as ego processes; immanent value in personality theory; problems and perspectives in investigating ego processes; and the interregulation between structures and ego processes. The migration of Italians to the area began in 1864 with Raffaele Bracaccini, who was attracted by the beauty of Lake Erie and the countryside. By 1938, Erie's 18,000 Italians comprised the third largest ethnic group. Erie had its own Italian language newspaper from 1915 to 1940. St. Paul's Church was built with the contributions of Italian immigrants. Columbus School, Columbus Park, and Rose Memorial Hospital were established. Societies and businesses flourished. This book contains more than 200 photographs collected from local families representing the collective memory and history of Erie's Italian community from the 1860s to the 1950s.
