With resources for not-for-profit public sector organizations proving increasingly scarce, partnerships with the private sector are becoming progressively more important to the growth and support of not-for-profit organizations. Frequently, private sector organizations are seeking not-for-profit physical activity, health, and sport partners for the valuable and unique links to potential markets and brand associations. This mix creates controversy over if, how, and at what cost public health and physical activity goals can be achieved in partnership with private, profit-driven organizations. Public–Private Partnerships in Physical Activity and Sport is a guide for nonprofit, charity, and sport organizations in developing and maintaining strategic and responsible relationships with corporate partners. With its comprehensive and practical examination, this text is also relevant to private sector corporations seeking public sector partners and for agencies seeking to broker such partnerships. This text is drawn from the collaboration of leaders in public and private organizations, athletes, and academics who identified a need to provide formalized direction on partnerships between the public and private sectors. Authors O’Reilly and Brunette present a detailed discussion of the pros and cons of establishing partnerships between not-for-profits and private sector organizations. They also provide a thorough understanding of the issues and illustrate how a responsible implementation of these partnerships can benefit all parties involved. They offer strategies and tactics for finding, developing, implementing, and evaluating public–private partnerships and highlight how partnership and social marketing studies outside of public health and health promotion can inform these growing disciplines. Providing guidelines from the World Health Organization and other entities worldwide, this resource offers readers a framework for forming and maintaining beneficial partnerships. Readers will also find the Partnership Protocol, a public health-centered collaborative initiative led by ParticipACTION, which provides evidence-based public–private partnership guidelines for practitioners. A foreword by Kelly Murumets of ParticipACTION, an advocate of partnership building in the public health sphere, emphasizes the value of this resource in confronting the challenges of public–private partnerships in a thoughtful and responsible way. Throughout, Executive Perspective sidebars provide expert commentaries on partnership from experienced individuals in both private industry and public health organizations. These sidebars include Global Application questions that provide insight into issues and obstacles overcome in creating public–private partnerships in the contexts of public health and health care. Case studies throughout the book help readers understand how partnerships and social marketing strategies can be successfully implemented. This comprehensive text shows how public–private partnerships done properly expand markets, increase efficiency, provide resources, allow access to expertise, and provide platforms for marketing, activation, and programs. Public–Private Partnerships in Physical Activity and Sport provides information, guidance, and tools to help readers make partnerships work most effectively for their organizations according to their resources, scope, and purpose. Public–Private Partnerships in Physical Activity and Sport is part of the Physical Activity Intervention Series. This timely series provides educational resources for professionals interested in promoting and implementing physical activity programs to a diverse and often resistant population.
Until the 1970s, North America was considered a backwater with respect to world championship–level motorcycle road racing. European racers viewed American riders as being less talented and rode around in circles on tracks made of dirt. That all changed when Kenny Roberts exploded onto the Grand Prix racing scene and became the first American to win the world championship in motorcycle road racing's premier class. Roberts' success launched an era of American dominance that lasted for nearly 20 years and still echoes through the annals of the sport. This is the story of the legendary American riders who beat the Europeans at their own game, including Freddie Spencer, Eddie Lawson, Wayne Rainey, Kevin Schwantz, Kenny Roberts Jr., and the most recent American world champion, Nicky Hayden. With additional chapters about the American World Superbike champions and those Americans who competed for the World Championship, this is the story road racing fans have been waiting decades to read.
Algonquin Wildlife: Lessons in Survival is a celebration of the vast array of wildlife studies ongoing in Ontario’s very first provincial park. Probably more research has been done in Algonquin than in any other protected landscape in the world. Norm Quinn, long-time Park Management Biologist in Algonquin, has been fortunate to know and to work with many of those dedicated and unique wildlife researchers who roam and probe the forests and lakes in search of Nature’s secrets. His knowledge, experience and sense of humour combine to transform technical biological studies, on moose, wolves, fish and other creatures of the wild, into entertaining and inviting stories without losing the significance of the research. This is also a book about Algonquin, Ontario’s flagship Park and one of the foremost canoe-tripping wilderness sites in the world. Through Algonquin Wildlife, you are invited to explore this relatively unknown but vital part of the Park’s heritage – a must for both seasoned and budding naturalists.

An inside story of what it is like to coach big-time college basketball. Originally published in 1994. Filling a gap in the sound recordings of traditional Anglo-American folk music this volume covers both vocal and instrumental material from the 1920s to the 1990s. The listings have also been limited to performers native to the tradition rather than "revival" performers. The album selection is grouped into field recordings and commercial (pre-1942) recordings, with subdivisions into individual recordings or anthologies. The discography not only reflects its author’s in-depth knowledge of Anglo-American folk music’s historical development but charts a valuable step forward in the evaluation, as well as select lissting, of available sound recordings.
In Miracles, Messages and Metaphors, Norm Carroll goes beyond the literal to embrace an interpretation of the Bible that is based on the meaning intended by the sacred author. Carroll probes for us crucial biblical characters and themes to draw spiritual significance from their historical context. Christ becomes an indwelling fulfillment of one's powerful possibilities in love and in truth as lived by Jesus of Nazareth. Truly, this wisdom will help us to solve society's and our own personal struggles and will empower us on our daily journey to Christ.Biblical wisdom, when understood according to the sacred authors' intentions, provides that spiritual insight for which every human heart yearns. Additionally, it sows seeds of solutions for today's seemingly insoluble societal problems. Jesus remains the central bearer of this wisdom and seeks humanity's turning from personal despair, militarism, and unrestrained upward mobility to his wise and invincible truths. This book explores his wisdom with its precious and indispensable treasure.

You are holding the only comprehensive history of the early days of the sport of skydiving yet published. It is the story of not just one skydiver but the story of many, the true pioneers of the sport. Just as important this book includes a complete history of the national organization established for the express purpose of promoting sport parachuting. While this history is restricted to a short fifteen years (1961-1975), those years were the most productive, most far-reaching, and the most exciting for the fledgling idea of jumping out of perfectly good airplanes for the sheer joy of it all, eventually establishing the sport of skydiving as an integral part of the world of aviation sports. This book tells the story of those formative years with details of battles fought to maintain freedom of the skies for all parachutists when government and corporate interests made numerous attempts to severely restrict the right of skydivers to use our nation's airspace. This story is told by a man who dedicated his life to the advancement of the sport, serving for twelve years as the chief executive officer of the national organization for skydivers, the Parachute Club of America / US Parachute Association. The reader will embark on a most exciting journey, a journey not told before, continually laced with personal stories that will touch your heart, make you smile, and occasionally make you laugh. This book contains over 400 photographs and 1,500 names of people from around the world who participated in that wonderful and exhilarating sport called skydiving.
This book helps expose some of the tricks and traps the enemy of our soul uses to keep us fearful about harmful secrets that should have been revealed. However, because of shame or embarrassment, the secret was tucked away into the family junk-drawer of life. Without warning, like a menacing jack-in-the-box, the secret jumps out and causes emotional turmoil that affects many lives. The sooner we confess and expose the secret that haunts us, the sooner we are set free from the weight of having to keep the unwanted secret in our soul. We should not plaster every terrible secret on a social media platform for all to read. Bring healing to the family by keeping the family mess in the house, then clean the house with God’s help.
A culturally influential sub-discipline within literary studies, literary theory has developed in parallel form in other arts and social science disciplines, so that one might refer to “cultural theory” or “social theory” as well, or even just to “theory.” It’s as familiar as the word “postmodern” and as tricky as “deconstruction.” What is it about? What is at stake? Theory is about rationality. This book’s title invites two different interpretations of what it might mean to say so. For many, the essence of literary theory is the unmasking and redescription of rationality in other terms. Put ironically, rationality is male; rationality is white; rationality is repression.... The book’s title, however, can also be read in a second way. On this reading, rationality itself is the essence of literary theory and central to literature, art, and society. Certain conceptions of what it entails can be problematic; the critique in the first way of reading the title remains relevant. Yet one can affirm rationality as integral to human flourishing, including the processes of producing, analyzing, and enjoying literature, art, and culture. This book provides readers with a clear overview of theory’s development and the abiding presence of its concern with the status of rationality across its forms.
Buddhism ought to be an animal rights religion par excellence. It has long held that all life forms are sacred and considers kindness and compassion the highest virtues. Moreover, Buddhism explicitly includes animals in its moral universe. Buddhist rules of conduct--including the first precept, "Do not kill"--apply to our treatment of animals as well as to our treatment of other human beings. Consequently, we would expect Buddhism to oppose all forms of animal exploitation, and there is, in fact, wide agreement that most forms of animal exploitation are contrary to Buddhist teaching. Yet many Buddhists eat meat--although many do not--and monks, priests, and scholars sometimes defend meat-eating as consistent with Buddhist teaching. The Great Compassion studies the various strains of Buddhism and the sutras that command respect for all life. Norm Phelps, a longtime student of Buddhism and an acquaintance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, answers the central questions of whether Buddhism demands vegetarianism and whether the Buddha ate meat. He is not afraid to examine anti-animal statements in Buddhist lore--particularly the issues of whether Buddhists in non-historically Buddhist countries need to keep or to jettison the practices of their historical homelands.

Oceano is a California beach town between San Francisco and Los Angeles. Originally part of the Rancho El Pismo Mexican land grant of 1840, Oceano first appeared as a place name on a map in 1893 and was promoted as a beach resort soon after the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1895. While most of these promotions failed during the Great Depression, the railroad depot continued as a shipping point for the areas agriculture. During this time, Oceano became a point of entry for the Dunites, a group of artists, writers, and poets who once lived in the sand dunes south of town. Today Oceano is still the primary access and gateway to its state park beach and large sand dune complex. Many people come to enjoy the experience of driving on the beach, camping there, and venturing into the dunes on foot or by vehicle.
Preface I explicitly do not affirm the truth of any statement made or implied herein concerning any actual people, including myself; or any actual relationships, including my own; or any concrete situations depicted. Everything I have written is either about or based upon my perceptions, memories, imagining, suppositions, assessments of poetic and dramatic appropriateness, and the like, all such, qua sources of factual truth, being notoriously fallible. The only truth that I do affirm herein is that of the universals that can be abstracted from the particulars of my subjective experience, the universals call them poetic truths whereby my audience can better understand and perfect themselves as I, hopefully, have been able to do for myself in the living and subsequent describing of all that follows. If anything I have written happens to occasion any people pain, I express in anticipation my deepest compassion; such people must know, however, that I would not have written as I have if I did not suppose that I would thereby have caused, in potentiality, far greater good than harm. Thumbs Up, V for Victory, I Love You chronicles a special time, from the early 1940s through the mid-50s. It reveals how people moved forward in a world in tumult, and the payoff they received having survived it. Its about a handful of kids who because they were in the right place at the right time were provided an education well above the norms of the day. It reflects the melodrama that is real life, when young and old lived each day to the fullest while making the most of what they had. Its an oral history that tells how the wonders of discovery, communication, education and the opposite sex changed an impressionable boy into a determined young man. A period that has not been afforded the coverage it deserves, Thumbs Up, V for Victory, I Love You reveals a softer time, but one no less significant or singular than any other.
The Bible is an inconvenient text. There are passages that are 'grey' rather than 'green'. These passages depict God or humans destroying or devaluing parts of creation. What if we dare to read these 'grey texts' from the perspective of the victims - Earth and the domains of Earth? How then would we relate to these de-valued parts of creation? And, how does this Gospel contribute to resolving this dilemma? Norm Habel has taught Old Tesatment in Australia, the USA and India. He has written major commentaries on the Book of Job and is editor of the Sheffield Press' Earth Bible Series.

Opening with a powerful letter to former Tacoma police chief David Brame, who shot his estranged wife before turning the gun on himself, Norm Stamper introduces us to the violent, secret world of domestic abuse that cops must not only navigate, but which some also perpetrate. Former chief of the Seattle police force, Stamper goes on to expose a troubling culture of racism, sexism, and homophobia that is still pervasive within the twenty-first-century force; then he explores how such prejudices can be addressed. He reveals the dangers and temptations that cops face, describing in gripping detail the split-second life-and-death decisions. Stamper draws on lessons learned to make powerful arguments for drug decriminalization, abolition of the death penalty, and radically revised approaches to prostitution and gun control. He offers penetrating insights into the "blue wall of silence," police undercover work, and what it means to kill a man. And, Stamper gives his personal account of the World Trade organization debacle of 1999, when protests he was in charge of controlling turned violent in the streets of Seattle. Breaking Rank reveals Norm Stamper as a brave man, a pioneering public servant whose extraordinary life has been dedicated to the service of his community.
Norm Phelps has long been one of the leading theoreticians, historians, and strategists of the animal advocacy movement. His new book collects his recent writings on this subject, as well as offers in print for the first time a fully revised and updated version of the e-book he published with Lantern in 2013 (978-1-59056-379-3). Phelps argues that faced with the overwhelming wealth and power of the animal exploitation industries, animal activists are like David trying to stand up to Goliath. But rather than following the unsuccessful strategies of the past, Phelps proposes that we change the game by adopting David’s strategy of refusing to play by Goliath’s rules. Additional essays explore class and race in animal advocacy, the place of public policy vs. private morality in creating social change, and the unyielding barrier of human exceptionalism. Trenchant, wise, and deeply committed to the reduction of suffering and the liberation of animals, Changing the Game is sure to offer animal advocates much food for thought as the movement charts a way forward for all sentient beings.

The beginning of the Roman Catholic/Orthodox Theological dialogue during the 20th century raised to some high hopes for an imminent canonical unity between the two Denominations, and this, though premature, is not of course to be blamed; it is impossible for any contemporary Christian theologian not to suffer from the division within this very womb of the ontological unification of all things, which is the Church of Christ—precisely because this division gives to many the impression of a fragmentation of the Church’s very being and subsequently weakens her witness. In The Canterbury Tales, Geoffrey Chaucer asks a basic human question: How do we overcome tyranny? His answer goes to the heart of a revolutionary way of thinking about the very end of human existence and the nature of created being. His answer, declared performatively over the course of a symbolic pilgrimage, urges the view that humanity has an intrinsic need of grace in order to be itself. In portraying this outlook, Chaucer contributes to what has been called the "palaeo-Christian" understanding of creaturely freedom. Paradoxically, genuine freedom grows out of the dependency of all things upon God. In imaginatively inhabiting this view of reality, Chaucer aligns himself with that other great poet-theologian of the Middle Ages, Dante. Both are true Christian humanists. They recognize in art a fragile opportunity: not to reduce reality to a set of dogmatic propositions but to participate in an ever-deepening mystery. Chaucer effectively calls all would-be members of the pilgrim fellowship that is the church to behave as artists, interpretively responding to God in the finitude of their existence together.

In Portland's first decades, the northwest side remained dense forests. Native Americans camped and Chinese immigrants farmed around Guild's Lake. In the 1870s, Slabtown acquired its unusual name when a lumber mill opened on Northrup Street. The mill's discarded log edges were a cheap source of heating and cooking fuel. This slabwood was stacked in front of working-class homes of employees of a pottery, the docks, icehouses, slaughterhouses, and lumber mills. Development concentrated along streetcar lines. The early 20th century brought the 1905 Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, manufacturing, shipbuilding, Montgomery Ward, and the Vaughn Street Ballpark. Today, Slabtown is a densely populated residential neighborhood, with many small shops and restaurants and an industrial area on its northern border. Tourists still arrive by streetcar to the charming Thurman, NW Twenty-first, and Twenty-third Avenues. Famous residents include author Ursula Le Guin, baseball greats Johnny Pesky and Mickey Lolich, NBA player Swede Halbrook, and Portland mayors Bud Clark and Vera Katz.
What's modern Christianity got to do with Christ? His meaning, his WORD (of God) accomplishes so little compared to the self-sanctification assumed by so many. "I'll live forever in Heaven because Jesus is my personal savior". With Biblical referencing, this book reveals the extent that images and icons have become idols. Religious art is an aspect of ascendent man, such a creative creation. But the substantive representations (statures, etc.) usurp the spiritual and conceptual essence of what religion, especially Christianity, should be. God is a "guy in the sky?" Bible says God's invisible!! As for Jesus? What if we took away the handsome (almost Nordic) guy-image? What if no crucifix, even plain cross? Would the born-agains really reveal much that's Christ-like? Beyond extensive Biblical-based critique, I've included excerpts from my other writings that concern various aspects of religion. Also material written by others.
Many commentators and users of the Bible have, over the centuries and up to the present day, used the Bible to argue that animals have no rights, that they were put on this earth for our use, and that we have no obligations to them. In his cogent, honest, and fully researched and referenced work, The Dominion of Love, Norm Phelps attempts to encourage all who revere the Bible as holy scripture to open their hearts to the suffering that we inflict upon our nonhuman neighbors. He shows that the right of animals not to be imprisoned, harmed, and killed for our benefit flows naturally from the Bible's message of love and compassion and argues that this is the message of the Bible's most important passages dealing with our relationship to animals. He further responds to the defenses of animal exploitation that are often made based on the Bible. Beautifully written, The Dominion of Love is an essential addition to a growing body of literature that argues for a compassionate and non-exploitative reading of Holy Scripture.
