The ICEBE conference in Windhoek is the sixth in a series of annual conferences on engineering and business education. It is organized by the Robert-Schmidt-Institute (University Wismar), hosted by Polytechnic of Namibia and co-organised by University of Applied Sciences Jena. The conferences were held in Sibiu (Romania), Manila (Philippines), Cape Town (South Africa) and Wismar (Germany). The theme of the Windhoek Conference is “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability which describes the emphasis that is laid on always using these three terms in combination, i.e., not to consider one in isolation from the others. Thus the primary target of this conference is to provide the delegates with cross-disciplinary thinking related to the three main streams in engineering and business education.

In organic chemistry, fluorides are easily accessible from alcohols, geminal fluorides RR'CF2 from the respective aldehydes or ketones, and acyl fluorides RC(O)F from carboxylic acides by using DAST. Because DAST is easy to handle and gives clean reactions in syntheses, this Gmelin volume devotes much space to the description of the chemical and physical properties od DAST.

This volume treats the acyclic sulfur(II)-nitrogen compounds with one-coordinate and two-coordinate sulfur. Sulfur imide (S=NH) and N-organyl-sulfur imides (S=NR) are unstable compounds which can be stabilized by coordination to transition metals or trapped, for example, by Ä2 + 4Ü cycloaddition with 1,3-butadiene. Among dithionitryl (1+) salts, only ÄS=N=SÜ+AsF6- has been studied extensively. Cycloaddition with alkenes and triple bond compounds produce 1,3,2-dithiazolium salts. Thiohydroxylamine, HSNH2, has been detected in the gas phase. Numerous examples of N, N-diorganyl-amino-halogeno-sulfanes (XSNR2, X = F, Cl, Br, I; R = organyl) and salts of the cation (XS)2N+ (X = Cl, Br) are known. N, N-Diorganyl-amino-chloro-sulfanes are important synthetic reagents.

For the past two decades corporate governance reform in Europe has been guided by the ‘shareholder value’ model of the firm. That model has been discredited as one of the major causes of the financial and economic crisis. In a new book published by the ETUI an alternative approach to corporate governance is presented by members of the GOODCORP network of researchers and trade unionists. This new approach, entitled the Sustainable Company, draws on both traditional ‘stakeholder’ models of the firm and newer concerns with sustainability. The main elements of the Sustainable Company and the institutions needed to support it are presented. Key themes in the book are the need for worker ‘voice’ in corporate governance and for a binding legislative framework to promote sustainability. Individual chapters deal with the issues of worker involvement, employee shareholding, sustainability-oriented remuneration, international framework agreements, NGO-trade union relationships, reforming financial regulation and carbon taxes and emissions-trading schemes.

Of all the aspects of recovery in postwar Germany perhaps none was as critical or as complicated as the matter of dealing with Nazi criminals, and, more broadly, with the Nazi past. While on the international stage German officials spoke with contrition of their nation's burden of guilt, at home questions of responsibility and retribution were not so clear. In this masterful examination of Germany under Adenauer, Norbert Frei shows that, beginning in 1949, the West German government dramatically reversed the denazification policies of the immediate postwar period and initiated a new "Vergangenheitspolitik," or "policy for the past," which has had enormous consequences reaching into the present. Adenauer's Germany and the Nazi Past chronicles how amnesty laws for Nazi officials were passed unanimously and civil servants who had been dismissed in 1945 were reinstated liberally—and how a massive popular outcry led to the release of war criminals who had been condemned by the Allies. These measures and movements represented more than just the rehabilitation of particular individuals. Frei argues that the amnesty process delegitimized the previous political expurgation administered by the Allies and, on a deeper level, served to satisfy the collective psychic needs of a society longing for a clean break with the unparalleled political and moral catastrophe it had undergone in the 1940s. Thus the era of Adenauer devolved into a scandal-ridden period of reintegration at any cost. Frei's work brilliantly and chillingly explores how the collective will of the German people, expressed through mass allegiance to new consensus-oriented democratic parties, cast off responsibility for the horrors of the war and Holocaust, effectively silencing engagement with the enormities of the Nazi past.
