With the development of potent x-ray sources at many synchrotron laboratories worldwide, Compton scattering has become a standard tool for studying electron densities in materials. This book provides condensed matter and materials physicists with an authoritative, up-to-date, and very accessible account of the Compton scattering method, leading to a fundamental understanding of the electrical and magnetic properties of solid materials. The spectrum of Compton scattered x-rays is particularly sensitive to this behaviour and thus can be used as a direct probe and to test the predictions of theory. The current generation of synchrotron facilities allows this method to be readily exploited to study the ground state electron density in both elements and in complex compounds. It is important that those working in related fields, as well as the increasing number directly using the Compton method, have a comprehensive assessment of what is now possible and how to achieve it, in addition to a full understanding of its theoretical basis. This monograph is unique and timely, since little of what is described, was practicable a decade ago. The development of synchrotron radiation facilities has ensured that the technique described here will remain a powerful probe of electron charge and spin density for many years to come.

This book provides a comparative examination of distinct features and historical changes in food-sharing practices in various hunting-gathering societies, especially in the Inuit. Food sharing is a characteristic of human behavior and has been one of the central topics in anthropological studies of hunter-gatherers for a long time. While anthropologists have attempted to understand it in functional, historical, adaptational, social, cultural, psychological, or phenomenological perspective, they have failed to convincingly explain its origin, variation, existence or/and change. Recently, evolutionary ecology or behavioral ecology has dominated research of the topic. However, neither of them adequately considers social, cultural and historical factors in the analysis of human food-sharing practices. This book is an essential and fundamental study for every researcher interested in the relationship between human nature, society and culture.

Ignored in Britain and forgotten for generations in Japan, Henry Dyer (1848-1918), engineer, educationalist and author of two major works on Japan as well as dozens of papers and pamphlets and other works, has been the subject of ongoing research by Nobuhiro Miyoshi (Hiroshima University) for over thirty years, culminating in this updated and expanded version of his original 1989 biography, Dyer no Nippon. At the age of 24, even before he had taken his final exams at Glasgow University, Henry Dyer was appointed principal of Japan’s new Imperial College of Engineering (ICE), with a remit to set up a world-class engineering institution that would deliver the engineers with the technical know-how and expertise to build the New Japan. Dyer’s appointment by Ito Hirobumi, the then Vice-Minister for Public Works and a member of the Japanese Embassy in London (later to become Prime Minister). In the nine years Dyer was in Japan – unfettered by ancient academic traditions and protocols – he formulated an approach to engineering education that enabled the ICE to become the most advanced institution of its kind in the world, later to become part of Tokyo University. This study makes an important new contribution to o-yatoi (‘hired foreigner’) studies of the Meiji period, particularly in the field of education, and helps illuminate existing perceptions regarding the nature of Japan’s route to modernization.

Interface oral health science encompasses the fields of dentistry and dental medicine, but also extends to general medicine, agriculture, biomaterials science, bioengineering, and pharmacology. This book is a compendium of the research presented at symposiums held in 2011 by the Tohoku University Graduate School of Dentistry and by the Forsyth Institute. Its publication is intended provide further impetus for the progress of oral science and health, pointing the way for dental research for future generations.

Although Kenshin is intrigued by Raijûta's ideals (chiefly, that there is a need for a nation-wide, unifying school), Raijûta's plan to "weed out" the schools he deems unfit is not in accordance with Kenshin's deepest-held beliefs. Given the choice of either joining Raijûta's "Shinko-ryû" movement or dying, Kenshin walks away, choosing neither. But Raijûta isn't willing to let Kenshin off the hook so easily...
