So far, however, research has been almost exclusively from a Western point of view, without knowledge of the Byzantine sources. This book studies how transnationalisation, Europeanisation and migration processes intersect with football fandom, through an analysis of the transnational narratives and practices of Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray football fans in Vienna, Austria. Based on ethnographic fieldwork in Austria, Turkey and Germany, the author analyses the ways in which narratives about football fandom are often linked to migrant experiences, including practices of (self‐)culturalization in the diasporic context in Austria. Cold-water corals occur worldwide from high latitudes to tropical areas, in various settings from the deep-sea to shallow marine environments near the coast. The topic of this thesis is the establishment and extension of knowledge about environmental conditions controlling cold-water coral (CWC) mound development. From literature it is known that glacial-interglacial cycles drive development and geographic distribution of CWC mounds on a large scale. On the other hand, knowledge about the influence of small scale climatic and oceanographic changes during the Holocene is scarce. Thus, this thesis focuses on the investigation of the limited Holocene climatic and oceanographic changes and their effect on the process of mound genesis. For this purpose, a Holocene CWC mound setting in a sound in the Altafjord in northern Norway (70°N) -- the Stjernsund -- was chosen and the local benthic ecosystem was extensively analysed. Von den sub-arktischen hohen Breiten bis in warme tropische Zonen besiedeln Kaltwasserkorallen unseren Planeten. Sie haben sich verschiedenste Lebensräume erschlossen --- Von der Tiefsee bis zu marinen Flachwassergebieten an der Küste kann ihr Vorkommen beobachtet werden. Sie bilden faszinierende Ökosysteme die erst in den letzten Jahrzehnten intensiver erforscht wurden. Diese Arbeit widmet sich der tieferen Erforschung dieser Lebensräume. Im Fokus stehen dabei Umweltbedingungen, die die Entwicklung der Kaltwasserkorallenvorkommen kontrollieren. Umfangreiche frühere Untersuchungen haben bereits gezeigt, dass ihr Wachstum, als auch ihre geographische Verbreitung im Wesentlichen von Glazial-Interglazial-Zyklen gesteuert werden. Die kurzzeitlichen klimatischen und ozeanographischen Steuerungsfaktoren sind im Vergleich dazu jedoch nahezu unbekannt. Daher konzentriert sich diese Arbeit auf die Erforschung von kurzeitigen klimatischen und ozeanographischen Veränderungen, die insbesondere im Holozän zu beobachten sind, sowie deren mögliche Auswirkungen auf die Entwicklung von Kaltwasserkorallen Mounds. Hierzu wurde der holozäne Kaltwasserkorallen Mound im Stjernsund, ein Sund im Altafjord in Nordnorwegen (70°N) ausgewählt und dessen benthisches Ökosystem umfassend analysiert.

This dissertation elaborates differences and similarities of forms of ethical behaviour in general and analyses whether German consumers differentiate between different types of ethical behaviour in particular. The thesis is characterised by its intensive combination of theoretical and empirical research. It furthermore contributes to the literature as the method triangulation applied in the different surveys reveals previously unknown relationships between different kinds of ethical behaviour, such as ethical consumption and charitable giving, as well as between different forms of ethical products. Choice experiment, latent class analysis, information display matrix and item-based attitude assessment allowed the comparison of stated and revealed preferences as well as an analysis of the relevance of ethical product features within the context of different product and process attributes. The dissertation provides insights into a research field which is becoming more and more relevant and improves the understanding of consumers’ assessment and the interdependencies of the possibilities of ethical behaviour. This allows the development of recommendations for consumer policy makers, business and NGOs concerned with the ethics of consumer choice as well as future research on ethical behaviour in general and ethical consumption in particular.

The first chapter addresses a phenomenological approach to the concept 'reaction rate', which views the complex reaction as a single unit whose progress if judged from measurements of the formation rates of the reaction participants; it also sets forth the main strategies by which to determine the rates of heterogeneous catalytic reactions. Another approach, a mechanistic one, relying upon the reaction mechanisms considered in the second chapter that has recourse to the Horiuti-Temkin complex reaction kinetics theory and the elementary statement of the graph method application in chemical kinetics. The third, fourth and fifth chapters consistently expound the philosophy of the steady state multiplicity, auto-oscillations, and the reciprocal effect of competitive catalytic reactions. The sixth and seventh chapters concentrate on the kinetics of some pragmatically important heterogeneous and heterogeneous-homogeneous catalytic reactions. Most results, presented in these chapters were obtained in the authors' laboratories.

Private enforcement of competition law, in particular through damages actions, is recently one of the highly debated topics in European competition law. Arguments for private enforcement are based on the EU principle of effectiveness, while existing national substantive and procedural regimes applicable to damages may be ill-suited for the effective enforcement of EU competition law. However, the risk that the introduction of enforcement-oriented measures into national law is incompatible with private (civil) law is often underestimated or neglected. This book aims to reconcile both EU enforcement and private law perspectives through a detailed study of the English and Slovenian private law systems. Research on the compatibility of EU competitionenforcement- oriented measures with the private law regimes in England and Slovenia is used to argue that some changes to private law (based on proposals for effective enforcement) go too far and risk undermining the integrity of the Legal systems. This book already takes into account the 2014 Directive on antitrust damages actions.

International Organizations and Post-Soviet Conflicts in Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine: The Limitations of Imagining Peace and the Failure and Success in Negotiations addresses the protracted history of international conflict resolution efforts to the Georgian-Abkhaz, Moldovan-Transnistrian, and Eastern Ukraine conflicts. The author explores the origins and onset of these first two conflicts in the early 1990s, but also looks at the eruption of conflict in Eastern Ukraine in 2014 and at the first months after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This book shows how, from a conflict-transformation perspective, local vested interests and strategic interests have created obvious obstructions that have both fueled the conflicts and prevented their resolution. This volume develops a comprehensive theoretical framework for understanding the success and failure of international engagement that offers a new understanding of the extent to which international responses may or may not be helpful. Through an analysis of over 500 closed-source documents and about 70 interviews, the efforts of pan-European international organizations — with mandates from the OSCE, EU, UN, and NATO — are examined on both political and cultural levels. This work’s innovative analyses of those institutions’ performances shows how successes have often been overlooked and identifies misperceptions that reshape our understanding of the limitations to imagining peace.

Diploma Thesis from the year 2011 in the subject Psychology - General, grade: 1,0, Free University of Berlin, language: English, abstract: The current study investigated effects of continuous social inclusion in a virtual ball tossing game on the P300 event-related potential based on a single trial analysis. Participants played an ostensible online game called Cyberball, which served as a social modification of the classical Oddball Paradigm. During the inclusion session, ball passes to the participant became more frequent over time from almost none to 33% at the very end of the game. Each participant had to ran an inclusion and an exclusion session. According to the order of experimental conditions, two inclusion-groups encompassing 15 datasets were taken for analysis. Of special interest was the centro-parietal P3b subcomponent that emerges 220ms-500ms after stimulus onset. The signal detection technique included template matching and cross-correlation. The data were analyzed twice: Once with the raw data, once preprocessed with the application of the Independent Component Analysis. Performances of the different approaches were compared and evaluated. Effects of target probability changes on the P300 amplitude were investigated. Further a linear fit and a model of local target probability were applied to account for P300 amplitude variations. Latencies were mainly examined to validate the methods of single trial estimations.

A (re-)turn to ethics, which began in the 1980s and 1990s and is still predominant today, has been ascribed to literary studies and theory. In this book theoretical issues within ethics are discussed based on the examples of literary analyses. The authors examined are Margaret Atwood, Jeffrey Eugenides, and Robert M. Pirsig. The main questions concern the foundation on which ethical concepts are based, and the way in which such concepts function. These topics are evidently connected to matters of human concepts and human nature in general, which are understood to be fundamentally communicative. Contrary to popular conclusions of relativity, the need for a realist foundation of ethics - implying universal validity - will be revealed. It is not only possible, but also necessary to develop such an idea of ethics within a postmodern relativist framework. A communicative foundationalist ethics will thus be designed. With regard to literature an increasing emergence of first-person narrative can be witnessed in addition to a new focus on a realist and more mimetic style after a peak of pluralist conceptions at the end of the twentieth and the beginning of the twenty-first centuries. The analysis of such narrative situations will reveal the significance of the narrative generation of individual personalities for an understanding of ethical questions. The conflict between relativist and realist points of view centers on the postmodern critique of the individual. The study of the literary generation of individuals will elucidate means of confronting this critique. The theoretical background includes the poststructuralist and communicative concepts of Judith Butler and Seyla Benhabib as well as Ernst Tugendhat's analytical approach. Nina von Dahlern studied English language and literature, philosophy, sociology, and educational sciences at the Universities of Hamburg and Heidelberg. This book is based on her Ph.D. thesis.

The focus lies on the interaction of anthropogenic and geogenic aerosol particles, their spatio-temporal variation, the most important pollution sources as well as the impact of particulate aerosols on human health and the environment. Furthermore, the bioavailable fraction of metal concentrations and the effect of mitigation measures during the 2008 Olympic Games were evaluated.
