In Migrants and City-Making Ayşe Çağlar and Nina Glick Schiller trace the participation of migrants in the unequal networks of power that connect their lives to regional, national, and global institutions. Grounding their work in comparative ethnographies of three cities struggling to regain their former standing—Mardin, Turkey; Manchester, New Hampshire; and Halle/Saale, Germany—Çağlar and Glick Schiller challenge common assumptions that migrants exist on society’s periphery, threaten social cohesion, and require integration. Instead Çağlar and Glick Schiller explore their multifaceted role as city-makers, including their relationships to municipal officials, urban developers, political leaders, business owners, community organizers, and social justice movements. In each city Çağlar and Glick Schiller met with migrants from around the world; attended cultural events, meetings, and religious services; and patronized migrant-owned businesses, allowing them to gain insights into the ways in which migrants build social relationships with non-migrants and participate in urban restoration and development. Emotions are as old as humankind. But what do we know about them and what importance do we assign to them? Emotional Lexicons is the first cultural history of terms of emotion found in German, French, and English language encyclopaedias since the late seventeenth century. Insofar as these reference works formulated normative concepts, they documented shifts in the way the educated middle classes were taught to conceptualise emotion by a literary medium targeted specifically to them. As well as providing a record of changing language use (and the surrounding debates), many encyclopaedia articles went further than simply providing basic knowledge; they also presented a moral vision to their readers and guidelines for behaviour. Implicitly or explicitly, they participated in fundamental discussions on human nature: Are emotions in the mind or in the body? Can we "read" another person's feelings in their face? Do animals have feelings? Are men less emotional than women? Are there differences between the emotions of children and adults? Can emotions be "civilised"? Can they make us sick? Do groups feel together? Do our emotions connect us with others or create distance? The answers to these questions are historically contingent, showing that emotional knowledge was and still is closely linked to the social, cultural, and political structures of modern societies. Emotional Lexicons analyses European discourses in science, as well as in broader society, about affects, passions, sentiments, and emotions. It does not presume to refine our understanding of what emotions actually are, but rather to present the spectrum of knowledge about emotion embodied in concepts whose meanings shift through time, in order to enrich our own concept of emotion and to lend nuances to the interdisciplinary conversation about them.

The first in-depth study of the collaborative intellectual exchange between the European and the Arabic Republics of Letters. Beyond Orientalism reformulates our understanding of the early modern Mediterranean through the remarkable life and career of Moroccan polymath Ahmad Ibn Qâsim al-Hajarî (ca. 1570-1641). By showing Hajarî’s active engagement with some of the most prominent European Orientalists of his time, Oumelbanine Zhiri makes the case for the existence of an Arabic Republic of Letters that operated in parallel to its European counterpart. A major corrective to the long-held view of Orientalism that accords agency only to Europeans, Beyond Orientalism emphasizes the active role played by Hajarî and other “Orientals” inside and outside of Europe in some of the most significant intellectual movements of the age. Zhiri explores the multiple interactions between these two networks of intellectuals, decentering Europe to reveal how Hajarî worked collaboratively to circulate knowledge among Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

Daughters of the Union casts a spotlight on some of the most overlooked and least understood participants in the American Civil War: the women of the North. Unlike their Confederate counterparts, who were often caught in the midst of the conflict, most Northern women remained far from the dangers of battle. Nonetheless, they enlisted in the Union cause on their home ground, and the experience transformed their lives. Nina Silber traces the emergence of a new sense of self and citizenship among the women left behind by Union soldiers. She offers a complex account, bolstered by women's own words from diaries and letters, of the changes in activity and attitude wrought by the war. Women became wage-earners, participants in partisan politics, and active contributors to the war effort. But even as their political and civic identities expanded, they were expected to subordinate themselves to male-dominated government and military bureaucracies. Silber's arresting tale fills an important gap in women's history. She shows the women of the North--many for the first time--discovering their patriotism as well as their ability to confront new economic and political challenges, even as they encountered the obstacles of wartime rule. The Civil War required many women to act with greater independence in running their households and in expressing their political views. It brought women more firmly into the civic sphere and ultimately gave them new public roles, which would prove crucial starting points for the late-nineteenth-century feminist struggle for social and political equality.
An intimate foray into the invisible work that made it possible for pictures to circulate in print and online from the 1830s to the 2010s. Picture Research focuses on how pictures were saved, stored, and searched for in a time before scanners, servers, and search engines, and describes the dramatic difference it made when images became scannable, searchable, and distributable via the internet. While the camera, the darkroom, and the printed page are well-known sites of photographic production that have been replaced by cell phones, imaging software, and websites, the cultural intermediaries of mass-circulation photography—picture librarians and researchers, editors, and archivists—are less familiar. In this book, Nina Lager Vestberg artfully details the range of research skills, reproduction machinery, and communication infrastructures that was needed to make pictures available to a public before digitization. Drawing on documents and representations across a range of cultural expressions, Picture Research reveals the intermediation that has been performed by skilled workers in a variety of roles, making use of pre-photographic, photographic, and digital machineries of capture, accumulation, extraction, and transmission. Tracing a history of the modern pictorial economy from the pre-photographic 1830s to the post-digitized 2010s, it makes visible and explicit the invisible labor that has built—and still sustains—the visual commodity culture of everyday life.

Wie wird die ertastete Form eines Objektes im Gehirn abgespeichert? Ist die haptische Reprasentation ahnlich zu der, der visuellen Wahrnehmung? Entsteht sogar eine multisensorische, und somit gemeinsame, Reprasentation? Diese fundamentalen Fragen bilden den Hintergrund der vorliegenden Dissertation. Die hier dargestellten Experimente zeigen, dass der Mensch sehr ahnliche perzeptuelle Raume generiert, wenn komplexe Formen eines parametrisch definierten Objektraumes visuell oder haptisch exploriert werden. Um dies zu zeigen, wurde zuerst ein dreidimensionaler Objektraum muschelahnlicher Objekte generiert, welche in drei Formparametern variieren. Versuchspersonen wurden in den visuellen Versuchen Fotos oder virtuelle Rekonstruktionen der Objekte gezeigt, wahrend in den haptischen Versuchen 3D Plastikmodelle der Objekte, generiert mit einem 3D Drucker, mit verbundenen Augen betastet wurden. In einer ersten Reihe von Experimenten bewerteten die Versuchspersonen die Ahnlichkeit zweier, nacheinander gezeigter, Objekte. Mit diesen Ahnlichkeitsbewertungen und mit Hilfe des Verfahrens der multidimensionalen Skalierung wurden die perzeptuellen Raume beider Modalitaten visualisiert. Uberraschenderweise konnten die Versuchspersonen die Topologie des Objektraumes korrekt nachbilden, unabhangig davon, ob sie die Objekte gesehen oder betastet hatten. Weiterhin zeigten die Ergebnisse, dass der visuelle und der haptische perzeptuelle Raum fast identisch waren. Als nachstes wurden drei Kategorisierungsexperimente durchgefuhrt. Obwohl Kategorisierung allein durch den Tastsinn eher eine ungewohnliche Aufgabe ist, konnte sie genauso gut gelost werden, wie wenn die Versuchspersonen die Objekte sehen konnten. Anschliessend wurden die perzeptuellen Raume beider Modalitaten mit den Ergebnissen der Kategorisierungsexperimente verglichen. Fur alle Kategorisierungsexperimente und fur beide Modalitaten war die wahrgenommene Ahnlichkeit zwischen Objekten einer Kategorie hoher, als die Ahnlichkeit zweier Objekte aus unterschiedlichen Kategorien. Das heisst, dass, sowohl visuell als auch haptisch, Objekte in einer Kategorie zusammengruppiert wurden, die als sehr ahnlich wahrgenommen wurden.Um zu untersuchen, inwieweit die auf den computergenerierten Objekten basierenden Ergebnisse auf naturliche Objekte ubertragbar sind, wurde eine Sammlung von Muscheln und Salzwasserschnecken erstellt. Mit diesen wurden, wie oben beschrieben, Ahnlichkeitsbewertungen durchgefuhrt und mittels multidimensionaler Skalierung die perzeptuellen Raume visualisiert. Wiederum waren der visuelle und der haptische perzeptuelle Raum fast identisch. Interessanterweise konnte man in beiden Raumen eine Gruppenbildung erkennen, weshalb auch hier drei Kategorisierungsexperimente durchgefuhrt wurden. Obwohl die Muscheln in einer Vielzahl an Objektmerkmalen variierten, z.B. Form, Farbe, Muster etc., konnten die Versuchspersonen diese Aufgabe ohne Muhe losen, auch wenn sie die Objekte nur betasten durften. Zusatzlich konnte die Gruppenbildung, die schon in den perzeptuellen Raumen erkennbar war, die Kategorisierungsergebnisse richtig vorhersagen.Zusammengenommen weisen diese Ergebnisse darauf hin, dass die visuelle und die haptische Reprasentation von Objekten sehr eng miteinander verknupft sein mussen. Zusatzlich liefern die Experimente Hinweise darauf, dass die gleichen Prozesse genutzt werden, wenn Ahnlichkeiten zwischen Objekten wahrgenommen werden, oder Objekte kategorisiert werden, egal ob die Objekte visuell oder haptisch exploriert werden.
How sound leaves a fundamental imprint on who we are. Making sense of sound is one of the hardest jobs we ask our brains to do.
