Sufism in Ottoman Damascus analyzes thaumaturgical beliefs and practices prevalent among Muslims in eighteenth-century Ottoman Syria. The study focuses on historical beliefs in baraka, which religious authorities often interpreted as Allah's grace, and the alleged Sufi-ulamaic role in distributing it to Ottoman subjects. This book highlights considerable overlaps between Sufis and ʿulamāʾ with state appointments in early modern Province of Damascus, arguing for the possibility of sociologically defining a Muslim priestly sodality, a group of religious authorities and wonder-workers responsible for Sunni orthodoxy in the Ottoman Empire. The Sufi-ʿulamāʾ were integral to Ottoman networks of the holy, networks of grace that comprised of hallowed individuals, places, and natural objects. Sufism in Ottoman Damascus sheds new light on the appropriate scholarly approach to historical studies of Sufism in the Ottoman Empire, revising its position in official early modern versions of Ottoman Sunnism. This book further re-approaches early modern Sunni beliefs in wonders and wonder-working, as well as the relationship between religion, thaumaturgy, and magic in Ottoman Sunni Islam, historical themes comparable to other religions and other parts of the world.
The nature of human reason is one of the thorniest of mysteries in philosophy. The reason appears in many specific forms within general areas such as cognition, thinking, experiencing beauty, and moral judgment. These forms are “perfectly” known in philosophy, yet an unknown pattern has been noticed which shows us that they are all a variation of the same theme: truth is an identity relation between the “thought” and “reality”; justice is an identity relation between the given and the deserved; beauty is an identity relation as rhyme is an identity relation between the final sounds of words; rhythm is an identity relation between time intervals; symmetry is an identity relation between two halves; proportion is an identity relation between two ratios; anaphora is an identity relation between the initial words. Particular things are identities in themselves and universals are identities between particulars. One idea associates another idea identical to it; an analogy is an identity between relations; induction is an identification between the known and unknown instances; and all the logic rests on the law of identity. What is common for all of them is the nature of reason itself.
Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: Measuring performance of fund managers is a topic equally interesting to practitioners and researchers. Most common performance measures rely on the assumption of constant risk during the entire evaluation period. The measure of risk is the beta from the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). In order to better assess a manager s investment ability, additional factors could be employed to capture the different sources of risk. The manager owes each portion of the achieved return to a certain risk factor. The risks a manager is running can be summed up to form his personal benchmark, which thus reflects the investment style. Still, the exposures to the included risk factors are assumed to be constant. The dynamics of the capital markets had not been captured by the prevailing performance measures before an approach that controlled for varying economic conditions was suggested. Models that are based on this approach deliver a beta conditional on the market state. The manager s exposure to the risk of the own benchmark was thus allowed to vary in time. Consequently, the search for indicators of the market states was launched and a model framework which could accommodate the chosen indicators as part of the benchmark had to be chosen. Two model frameworks emerged and a couple of indicators established themselves as standard. This study largely follows the approach of Ferson and Schadt. They introduced a linear model that can be perceived as a conditional version of the CAPM. The aim of this study is not only to obtain performance measures which result from the conditional models. Since the variation in the exposure to market risk is accounted for, one who employs conditional models gains insight into fund manager s trading. If the trading is reflected in changes of the beta, then inference on fund strategy is made possible even though information on the portfolio structure is not provided. The explanatory power of a conditional model depends on the researcher selecting a representative benchmark for the funds in the sample and indicators of economic conditions that fund managers rely on in reality. The structure of this paper is the following: chapter 2 builds the theoretical foundation of conditional models and presents their two forms; chapter 3 relates this study to previous literature in the area; chapter 4 employs conditional models to evaluate strategies and performance of German fund managers; chapter 5 sums up the [...]

Spiking neural networks (SNN) are biologically inspired computational models that represent and process information internally as trains of spikes. This monograph book presents the classical theory and applications of SNN, including original author’s contribution to the area. The book introduces for the first time not only deep learning and deep knowledge representation in the human brain and in brain-inspired SNN, but takes that further to develop new types of AI systems, called in the book brain-inspired AI (BI-AI). BI-AI systems are illustrated on: cognitive brain data, including EEG, fMRI and DTI; audio-visual data; brain-computer interfaces; personalized modelling in bio-neuroinformatics; multisensory streaming data modelling in finance, environment and ecology; data compression; neuromorphic hardware implementation. Future directions, such as the integration of multiple modalities, such as quantum-, molecular- and brain information processing, is presented in the last chapter. The book is a research book for postgraduate students, researchers and practitioners across wider areas, including computer and information sciences, engineering, applied mathematics, bio- and neurosciences.

Croatian Radical Separatism and Diaspora Terrorism During the Cold War examines one of the most active but least remembered groups of terrorists of the Cold War: radical anti-Yugoslav Croatian separatists. Operating in countries as widely dispersed as Sweden, Australia, Argentina, West Germany, and the United States, Croatian extremists were responsible for scores of bombings, numerous attempted and successful assassinations, two guerilla incursions into socialist Yugoslavia, and two airplane hijackings during the height of the Cold War. In Australia alone, Croatian separatists carried out no less than sixty-five significant acts of violence in one ten-year period. Diaspora Croats developed one of the most far-reaching terrorist networks of the Cold War and, in total, committed on average one act of terror every five weeks worldwide between 1962 and 1980. Tokić focuses on the social and political factors that radicalized certain segments of the Croatian diaspora population during the Cold War and the conditions that led them to embrace terrorism as an acceptable form of political expression. At its core, this book is concerned with the discourses and practices of radicalization—the ways in which both individuals and groups who engage in terrorism construct a particular image of the world to justify their actions. Drawing on exhaustive evidence from seventeen archives in ten countries on three continents—including diplomatic communiqués, political pamphlets and manifestos, manuals on bomb-making, transcripts of police interrogations of terror suspects, and personal letters among terrorists—Tokić tells the comprehensive story of one of the Cold War’s most compelling global political movements.
Bosnia-Herzegovina" was originally published in French in Geneva, Switzerland in 1917, as a way of familiarising the reading public with the land that was often in the headlines in the late XIX and early XX centuries, but was still largely an unknown. Written from a Serbian perspective on the history and the wartime situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Nikola Stojanović was able to provide a unique insight, as he was elected as a representative in the Assembly, the primarily ceremonious parliament of Bosnia and Herzegovina under Austria-Hungary, during the only elections for it during the Austro-Hungarian rule. Most of the Serb members of the Assembly ended up imprisoned for their political views or were stuck in the country during the First World War, giving Stojanović a rare voice which was able to represent the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina with a relative insider's perspective.
The IMO Compendium" is the ultimate collection of challenging high-school-level mathematics problems and is an invaluable resource not only for high-school students preparing for mathematics competitions, but for anyone who loves and appreciates mathematics. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), nearing its 50th anniversary, has become the most popular and prestigious competition for high-school students interested in mathematics. Only six students from each participating country are given the honor of participating in this competition every year. The IMO represents not only a great opportunity to tackle interesting and challenging mathematics problems, it also offers a way for high school students to measure up with students from the rest of the world. Until the first edition of this book appearing in 2006, it has been almost impossible to obtain a complete collection of the problems proposed at the IMO in book form. "The IMO Compendium" is the result of a collaboration between four former IMO participants from Yugoslavia, now Serbia and Montenegro, to rescue these problems from old and scattered manuscripts, and produce the ultimate source of IMO practice problems. This book attempts to gather all the problems and solutions appearing on the IMO through 2009. This second edition contains 143 new problems, picking up where the 1959-2004 edition has left off.
